I fly any cargo that you can pay to run
The bush league pilots, they just can't get the job done
You've got to fly down the canyon, don't never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run

Story from the Fool-Em on the Concordia recruiting class.

They pull a lot of players from BFE, if you know what I mean ;)

A tradition unrivaled...

Torii who?

BA/OBP/SLG

.255/.309/.380
.261/.306/.479
.280/.318/.408
.282/.306/.427

Listed by BA, those are the first three semi-regular season's of Torii Hunter's career (ages 23-25, all 300+ ABs) along with what Carlos Gomez has done so far this season (age 22).  Sure, it's impossible to really tell anything from 117 ABs (and Gomez was hitting .230/.247/.310 just 8 games ago), but so far he has produced a reasonable offensive facsimile of the early Hunter years.

I still think the Twins are making a mistake by not having Gomez spend this season in the minors.  It is apparent that for all the unbelievable skills he possesses, Gomez still really has no idea how to play baseball.  If he does develop into a Hunter-level player, this wasted* season is going to cost the Twins big time down the road--either a ton of extra cash for Gomez or a season of his services when he qualifies for free agency a year early.

*Flame away.  Current standings be damned, the Twins aren't going to win the division this year and (in 2008) Carlos Gomez is more part of the problem than part of the solution.

Geez TC, quit pissing in the punch bowl. We have the fastest player in baseball, entertaining as all hell. Sit back and enjoy the show.
Soucheray's column yesterday sums it up: Carlos Gomez's spontaneity is good for what ails us.

And that was published before he hit for the cycle.

Exactly.  What made you think about baseball?

Duff, this is the first mention I have seen of any kind on the CORD recruiting class. In the eyes of the Fool-em They rate slightly ahead of MSUM and somewhere below NDSU/NDSU/NDSU/Fargo South/Fargo North.

The two local kids that are going there are nice athletes. But I know for a fact outside of CORD they didn't get looks from anyone else.

Where are the o-linemen?

One of the things I've liked most about reading the recent articles on SJU recruiting is that they've obviously given attention to the o-line and RB positions.

And you guys know that Josh Rose is spending next semester in Japan, right?

Now, when you say "Japan" do you mean "Japan, the country" or "Japan, moving to defensive end to replace Mitch Eversman"?  Because one of those things really doesn't help the Johnnies win more games, does it?

Fins, you say pessimism, I say realism.  You know who else was really exciting?  Cristian Guzman.  He was always bunting and hitting triples and half-assing plays in the field so they ended up being closer than they should have been.  He was also a player who wasn't fundamentally sound when he was called up, never became so at the major league level despite his obvious physical ability, and never really won that many ballgames for the Twins.

But hey, the Twins are in first, Gomez is cycling, and Livan is pitching like he's 45 again.  Life is great!

Now you're talking! You know who else is exciting? Nick Punto. Now that's excitement!  ::)
