retagent

fins - I got a Service Text message all in Espanol last week.

flash - Does SUMMERFEST start this weekend?

janesvilleflash

No, next weekend. I don't go to that, I don't like crowds that big anymore. If I want to get pushed around I can stay home and Mrs. Flash will do it.

PS to retagent, Tues. and Thurs. don't work for me. Most any other time.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

57Johnnie, I almost teared up when I got to 1:39 on the In the Jailhouse Now. Let's hope the "dream girl" never appears in my court. I would probably have to recuse myself. Then again, if she was convicted of any offense, I could order her to provide community service via helping with the Stiftungsfestivities at SJU. ;)

I didn't think it was fair to put her in there with Saddam, Michael Jackson, Michael Vick et. al.  >:(

What happened to beer, football, fishing and beer?  ???  ::)

Been on a self-imposed vacation from the board for a while, but I hope to be checking in a bit more regularly here now.  But I come back and read about politics, tort reform and convicts?  57Johnnie is mostly right-- he just forgot hockey!

Also, public assistance 70 years ago was the "New Deal", right?  Which assistance parts of the New Deal would you like to have prevented?

BTW, I think that most public assistance that lets able bodied people just sit at home and collect a check has pretty much disappeared since the Reagan and Clinton years.

In the interest of peace, love and Hamm's and in an effort to avoid the board taking a political delve which would turn away all but 3 users, I changed my sig.

My final parting thought in response to your sentence quoted above; you've clearly never worked at a county hospital, taken foster children, or shopped at a grocery store in a poor neighborhood. I've had 4 year olds explain to me that you don't have to work and you will get checks in the mail for doing nothing. I've seen completely able bodied individuals in on permanent disability for "back pain" with no injury, no issues on any testing scans and completely normal exams. I've seen people on welfare driving nicer cars than I do. I've overheard young unwed mothers who can't comprehend that putting breast milk in a child's ears doesn't help ear infections explaining to other similar persons how to calculate how much more money you can get for each additional child. I've seen people in front of me at the grocery store pay for chips, twinkies, ground round, and pop with their food stamp card then pay cash for their beer and cigarettes.

With that, I'm done on the topic. Back to Hamm's, the Twins, and McHale being an idiot.
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

Thank goodness the rain didn't push Wisconsin over the edge.  BDB and Flash can now relax and dress as they wish (or as their wives wish them to dress) at high school hockey games.

I've never been into going shirtless and painting my body, but I've heard BDB is really big on it.

Fair enough, your experience is certainly valid in terms of formulating your opinion.

I too could counter with numerous examples of situations that I have encountered where very deserving people were denied help that could have returned them to being productive tax payers but that help is no longer available or only available if they get a lawyer to sue on their behalf.  But no point in belaboring this much further.  We all have our own values and it's hard to argue values.  Public displays of values do tend to create reactions and arguments.

Just finished reading a book called "Where Does The Money Go?"  Makes a solid case that Medicare is our biggest looming crisis, followed by social security and interest on the national debt in terms of long term impacts.  These three plus national defense make up 60% of the 2006 budget and all are growing.

As you sift through everything else there isn't much to gain, unless you weed out everything that anyone thinks is wasted spending.  Various types of income security (where the deadbeats lie) make up about 5%.  The deadbeats also suck up some of the 6% that make up food, health and housing assistance.

Let's go have a beer (O'Doul's for me), talk some football and watch some babes sunbathe. ;)

BTW your conclusion about what I've never done is a bit off the mark.  And I will admit that standing behind food stamp people in a poor neigborhood grocery store can be an irritating and depressing experience.

That's a particularly good one, BDB.  George Will is laughing up his sleeve as well (he never did like Fred Thompson).

Anyone who wants $2 gas back immediately; you can find places that are selling it and advertising it as $2 per half gallon. ???

One comment on this whole thing.  Know KR and knowing that the line was rooted in truth and humor I think it was totally acceptable.  Also all welfare is discriminatory.  As the welfare has grown to provide more for the "needy" as they have more kids it does nothing to stop and make sure that the people having these kids are good or sound parents.  The unwed mothers that KR speaks of is all true.  Working in retail for most of my adult life I have seen this.  Seen how buying a peice of nickel bubble gum getting the change for the dollar food stamp and then after the kid has his bubble gum the parents take the change and get their beer and cigarettes with the left over change was pure theft IMHO.  That has changed with the EBT cards.  Users can no longer get that change.  Welfare has changed but it still does nothing about these people making good decisions with their money.  The welfare goes to people earning a paycheck now because they can not make it.  Now here in Iowa we have the Hawk-I program.  Gives health insurance to people who make up to 41,000 a year.  That may not be much in Cali or New York but here in Iowa that is a decent living.  Why do we as tax payers allow this.  I think Judge Johnnie Red can attest that the Constitution that we all are supposed to live under has an equal protection clause.  I think that little phrase has been left out and ignored.  Why should we give some people money and benefits without holding them accountable for their actions and decisions.  Because I am wise with my life decisions and make good decisions with my money I have to pay for all the bad decisions of my fellow man.  Sounds to me like the Equal Protection Clause is being ignored.  Enough of my rant.  Now back to the good times and humor I like about this board.

Hum, I never asked him to remove it and was not trying to say he can't have his opinion.

Was originally just pointing out a perceived to me inconsistency between the quote and his occupation.  And as he admitted later the quote overgeneralized his feelings about public assistance.

As I've learned and I think some others also, anytime you put something controversial out there in your quote or signature (or self deprecating avatar in my case) you are open to it being commented on, challenged or criticized.
