Who have the Tom's beat this year that Carleton and Augsburg haven't/can't beat?

KR's right on this one.  Tommies lost to Olaf by six.  Olaf lost to Carleton by 14.  Therefor, Carleton beats the tommies by 20.  Olaf lost to Augsburg by 28, but beat the Tommies by 6.  Therefor, the Tom-Toms lose to augsburg by 34.  That's just good math right there  ;)

GAC had 50+ in its recruiting class this year, which I believe is the largest in school history. I've got to imagine the new facilities played a big role in that. It's too late for Schoeny, but hopefully the new coach can combine that with some solid smarts right away for a quick start.

LoneAuggie - What are the chances we see Winford matched up with Frank this weekend? If it happens, how do you see things playing out? That'd be a fun one to see.

For what it's worth, sources tell me Winford wanted to go to GAC out of high school. It obviously didn't happen...but can you imagine he and Arlt together on the same field? YIKES!
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

UST...we're selling hope this year.

Bench,

Glad you joined the party again. That Law School thing must be complete now, huh??

Speaking of selling hope. Do you think the Tommie student body will ever pick supporting their football team vs. getting wasted? Being the largest enrollment in the MIAC your student body could actually give the Tomcats a home field advantage. Let them know they can get drunk and still show up for the game....we do  :D

Unfortunately I'm only a 2L right now...haven't reached ESQ status quite yet.

As for the student body getting drunk and not showing up for the game: SJU has their traditions we have ours. One game a year the seminarians show up in full force...for some reason this year they chose Macalester. Not sure why. I'd like to see it become more of a priority; and I think with Caruso generating some on-campus buzz I don't see why it'd be a big ordeal to roll out of their dorm room at noon, eat some scrambled eggs at the caf and walk the 50 yards to the stadium...

Unfortunately at UST the priorities are different on a Saturday afternoon for the typical student...

The Bennies hit up Costco for some Marlboro Reds, grab some Boones Farm and head for the woods to watch the game...

The Tommie girls go tanning, work on their abs, spend their father's money on J-Crew stuff and dote on the football team post game without having to participate in all of that painful school spirit stuff...

Let's be honest with ourselves here.

Check that their eggs remain unfertilized... dial information to determine their names and addresses... identify their shoes by the "L" and "R" written on the toes...

As long as we're being honest.  ;)

I think that the Gusties should make a run at Jimmy G for their next coach.  Improve both teams. ;)

Aren't those seminars optional to attend?  I know the seminars at CC were optional, it was a time to sleep in, not go to class and get info on it from someone else!

Great day to be a Vikings fan.  Who could have thought that the game plan would have gone so perfectly.   ;D ;D ;D  You keep the dreaded Saints offense bottled up so you can let the special teams carry the weight.  Then you call a pass play to put two receivers in an area to catch a TD pass.  Then to top it all off you get a game winning FG to ice the game.  That was one for the ages.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

Does that make one taking a test, a "testee"?

Ritz may want to rethink that little bit about hockey's dwindling fan base.

Willy-
I haven't been to practice this week, and have not spoken with coaches. My best guess is that Royce WILL be matched up on Frank. I don't know for sure, but vs. Hamline he seemed to be matched up on their #6, that looked, to my eye, to be their best receiver. So, I would expect the same this week. I don't know though. If it does happen, I think that Frank will have a size advantage. Royce isn't the 6'5" that Mr. Frank is, and that will obviously help the Knights. Royce IS a good jumper, so I, too, will be excited to see red-zone jump balls and see who wins! I would guess that Royce's demands on defense will probably compromise somewhat his game on offense. Having to work as hard as he will vs. a tremendous receiver in Mr. Frank, he'll probably be somewhat winded. I also don't know if we'll have some of our other big guns. Muneer didn't play vs. Hamline due to injury, and I don't know if he'll be ready. Also, Jason Potts, our great multi-purpose back/receiver left the Piper game with an injury and I don't know if he'll be ready to go. Again, I haven't been to practice, and haven't talked to coaches on this, so things may have changed. But, as of Saturday, Potts looked to be in quite a bit of pain/discomfort and I don't know if he'll be ready, and Muneer didn't even dress. So, the loss of those two will dramatically change our offense. Plus, Royce himself got hurt during that game, and he seemed to be a bit slowed after the game. So, it could be a long day for our side!

Hopefully the Auggies show up to play this week. Poor performance last week. Hopefully we'll respond.

As far as Royce going to GAC...  Maybe. That is, until he came to campus and chatted with ME! I'm sure he was so excited to play with an athlete of my caliber that he just couldn't turn down Augsburg! HA!!! Actually, my claim to fame with Mr. Winford is that I threw him his 1st collegiate touchdown. Unfortunately, he's had so many since then, he probably doesn't even remember me ever being on the field with him!

Good luck to all this week. Stay healthy!

Out of order, I'll show you out of order! You don't know what out of order is, Mr Task! I'd show you but I'm too old, I'm too tired, and I'm too f----n blind. If I were the man I was 5 years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place. Out of order, who the hell do you think you're talking to?

I'll make sure my local cable subscriber carries the OLN.  Like I have ALWAYS STATED, NHL hockey (pond soccer) is a niche sport for American Viewers, just like soccer is.  97% of Americans could care less if NICKOLONSKI SVELANASKOVIVH scores a goal in the NHL.   I'd rather pay 2x face value to attend a college of a high school hockey game than goto an NHL game.  Many Minnesotans may be Wild "fans", but their passion is for a college team.

That being said, I need to run home and throw my kids' hockey stuff in the car for their practices tonight!  8)

TC, fins, anyone, ..have a feel for who the Twins might be targeting in free agency?

I would love to see the Twins go after Mark Ellis.  He might have been the most underrated player in baseball a couple of years ago because he does a ton of things well, but nothing that really stands out:  he's not fast but he's an effecient basestealer, he's not a homerun hitter but he has surprising pop for a middle infielder, he's not a flashy defender but he makes more plays than nearly any other 2B in baseball.  Most importantly, he's a righthanded hitter who is pretty solid at controlling the strike zone and getting on base.

Signing him would allow the Twins to move Alexi Casilla to SS (they're convinced his glove will play there) and he would slot in nicely to the #2 spot in the batting order, pushing Casilla to the 8/9 spot where he belongs.  The lack of publicity surrounding him in Oakland (and in general, due to his style of play) will hopefully make him pretty affordable.  He'll be 32 next year and has started to decline (which is why he's only mildly underrated going forward), but if the Twins could get him for a reasonable 2- or 3-year deal, I think they'd be pretty happy.  Also, he's from South Dakota originally, so he's kinda one of us.

One nearly identical (but flashier) option would be Orlando Hudson.  Production-wise, it is difficult to find two more similar players (in fact, baseball-reference.com has Ellis as Hudson's 3rd most-comparable player ever).  If you ask the casual fan who the better player is, most would take 3-time Gold Glove winner, All-Star Hudson over the solid but unspectacular Ellis.  Hudson is a year younger--which definitely has some value--but is rather injury-prone (he's coming off a wrist injury which cost him the last ~50 games of '07).  Especially for a team with an eye on the bottom line, like the Twins, I think Ellis is the safer bet going forward.

Beyond that, I really wish Russell Branyan were righthanded as he would make a nice all-or-nothing platoonmate for Brian Buscher.  No other 3B, either through trade or free agency, strike me as particularly good bargains.

The Twins are pretty much set elsewhere, but I could see them do some middle relief dumpster diving.  I hope they keep in mind players like Dennys Reyes who come out of nowhere when they're put in the right (narrow) role and don't overspend for an RP.
