Gustie at Carleton recap

The possession before, with GAC leading 23-17 and under 30 seconds to play, Carleton was faced with a 3&10 from the Gustie 20ish. Gustavus was called for PI at the 4...and the refs said it was a spot foul! Schoeny called a timeout for an explanation, and the ref even told me it was the right call during that break, but I've never seen PI be a spot foul in the college game.
I think the officials actually got this one right. It was rightfully marked as a 15 yard penalty from the previous line of scrimmage- just inside the 20 yard line. There is no half the distance to the goal rule in this case as long as the 15 yards don't get you within the 2 yard line. It just so happened that the 5 yard line was also the spot of the penalty.

CornHorn...my comments were not that I expected those clubs to vault past the Cobblers, but rather they are the only teams that have players that have played in a playoff game or two.  Like it or not, the playoffs are a different beast altogether.  If you think a team without playoff experience, exceptional speed and the forward pass can go into the playoffs and make a run; enjoy November.  It will be enlightening.

Concordia made the national tournament in 2004 and 2005. You can say you don't respect their speed or scheme, but questioning their postseason experience seems a little silly.
And the bandwagons continue to veer off track

We got the bandwagon all up and runnin' for Augsburg and poop, right down the toilet they went.  We moved the bandwagon over to Carleton and oops they got beat by the number 7 team at home.

Ladies and gentlemen, the bandwagon now moves to Concordia.  All aboard. ;D ;D ;D ;D

From my estimation, Carleton is really in the drivers seat right now. With SJU, Concordia, and Bethel beating up on each other, Carleton is going to be the team to beat coming down the stretch. Playing at Concordia and hosting SJU to end the season will give everyone around the MIAC look to see how tough they really are. I hate to say it, but this could be the first win for Carleton against the Johnnies.
Hope you sober up before class tomorrow.  Check the remaining schedules.  Carleton could easily lose three of their last four games. (UST, Concordia and SJU).  Three of Concordia's last games are against Hamline, St Olaf and Gustavus.

The following teams will win the conference if they win all of their remaining games:  Concordia, Carleton, Gustavus.

Can you imagine if USTD were making a claim for driving a bandwagon?  A seance would be needed so that Dante could add a 10th circle to Hell.

It's sickening to hear about the way St Thomas lost, but I agree that Concordia is now back in the drivers' seat...especially with their remaining schedule. Carleton has slew of toughies coming up.

No it's not, Tommies suck!
Everyday is payday in paradise.

I know they suck haha.

It's just sad when games come down to bad calls.

CC's #2 QB in 2005?  A freshman named Jesse Nelson.

CC's #2 RB (by a poofteenth of an inch) in 2005?  A freshman named Cory Johnson.

The Cobbers are the MIAC's best shot at playoff glory, I figure.  Second round if they make it.  Maybe third.

Cory Johnson was started the first week of the season his freshmen year.  He has the most playoff experience of all the cobbers.  However, I hope they aren't looking any further than Hamline this weekend in St. Paul.

First, good to see everyone Saturday.  Good for the Hansels and Wimmers to pull the tailgating location together, and kudos to Dusty and Johnnie Tats for doing all the work with the burgers (not Stiffy burgers but still good), etc.  As Dusty said, a great day as well.  Probably our last game of the season (bad for us but probably not bad for the Johnnies - we came close to being 1-3 for games we saw).  The remnant will have to finish out the season (is TDT coming back from Vegas?).

Re the UST unis, they were right in line with the foppish Knights of Columbus garb worn by the color guard.  And the Vatican flag?  Woah.

Checking out the UST fight song in the game program (brother is that bad - nice they got the street location in there though), they encouraged folks to sing it with the team after the game.  But, with just a few exceptions, the Tommies left the field immediately after some perfunctory handshakes with SJU.  What's that all about?  I've seen more than my share of SJU losses in 3 years (we're bad luck) but the team always stays on the field.  I saw Caruso as he left the field and he wasn't happy, but why pull the team off the field?  Or does UST leave the field immediately after all their games?

Good game reporting in the UST student video.  I was checking my pix on the flight home and it indeed looked like the runner scored.  But as even Caruso said, you've got 4 chances on the 1, you should have made it on the next one.

It looks like there have been a number of coaching and talent upgrades in the MIAC.  If the league isn't better this year, and I don't know enough to say on that, it looks like it will be in years to come.

As someone not connected to any MIAC program, I can say this about the conference as a whole. I watched SJU play WW in Duffmans last year. I promise you, that team would beat any MIAC team from this year by 20.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Wonka,  postseason experience in 2004 and 2005 that occurred while most of this team (exception being Johnson in 05) was in high school does not make a team a playoff hardened team.  I think you can ask the folks from Bethel what a deep playoff run does for a program mentally, physically and in terms of expectations.

I'll grant you that. I just think a program who has seen some sustained success in recent years like the Cobbers can't really be sold short in that department. The leadership of Horan and those who came before the current batch of players has got to be worth something.

Now, if you were criticizing the Gusties for their playoffs inexperience, I wouldn't raise a peep. It's become a streak to challenge TDT's futility with the ladies. Sadly.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I was a wee bit shocked that the Tampa Bay GM didn't give a thank you to Bill Smith tonight.   ???

As MiacManiac said to me,"I always thought Bill Smith would build a World Series Team, I just didn't think it would be in Tampa!"

Garza goes 11-9 with a 3.70 ERA and 128 K's in 184 innings and goes on to be 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in the post-season including 2-0 1.38 with 14K's in the ALCS winning AL MVP, looking like a Hall-of-fame caliber pitcher against one of the best line-ups in baseball.
Bartlett hit .286 with 20 SB's and 16 errors in 128 games for a fielding percentage of .970.

Delmon surges late to get to .290 with an OBP .336 and had 105 K's with only 10 HR's.
Harris hit .265 with an OBP of .327 in 130 games with 98 K's.
Not to mention the obvious decline in the Twin's SS defense this year.
All that plus Pridie not looking to get significant playing time in a very crowded Twins outfield.

After year 1, the winner of this trade is definitely the Rays in my mind. I think with Garza's year in place of Livan and Bartlett at SS minus Young's bat the Twins are in the playoffs.

Thoughts?

Does this track record make Bill Smith and the other powers that be more hesitant to pull the trigger on a trade in the future?
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

It wasn't too long ago(when there was still real grass on the field) all were welcomed to linger on the UST field following the game.  I noticed the quick departure by the players also.  I thought the whole point of division III was to let people closer to the game.... guess Caruso doesn't want anyone touching his field.
