That was one of our standard post game beer drinking rugby songs in the 70s. As I think about it, I think we used "Stalin" in place of "Goering" . . . I know it doesn't make much sense, but that was never much of a consideration in our song selection or lyrics.

Since I haven't seen any games, my opinion may not be worth much, but from listening, it seems to me that Stifter had a good year also.

I agree with you, retagent. He was my second choice. The kid can't weigh much more that 165, but he's killer on the field. Plus his new 'stache makes him look just like Geraldo.

Pop quiz, Johnnie football fans:  Who is the best player on the 2008 Johnnies?

I guess I'd say Wimmer, almost by default, but no one really springs to mind.  I don't even know who else would be in the discussion--Bobby Klint?  Ben Vanderheyden?   Jeff Schnobrich?  Nick Gunderson, in 3 and a half quarters of play? 

It's not strange to not be able to pick the best Johnnie in a given year, but that's typically because you have a dozen all-conference players to choose from...

The johnnies colors are cardinal and blue.  I have never seen a photo of a johnnie uniform with any blue on it.  Is there?  If not, why?

A lot of the other sports have blue in the uniforms.  The story John told me is that back in the day, he was ordering new uniforms and it cost a lot more to get cardinal and blue than just cardinal and white.  So, he went with cardinal and white and it's just stayed that way since.

When I was there, the cardinal & blue home football uniforms were butt ugly (well maybe not as bad as Oregon). If memory serves me right, the team pictures were taken with the white traveling jerseys.

I only saw 6 games (all victories) but did Stifter ever call for a fair catch?  Fun player to watch, very smart and tackled well.

Item from the St. Cloud Times:

Two St. John's football players earned weekly awards from the MIAC. Senior running back Jeff Schnobrich was named the conference's offensive player of the week. His 22-yard touchdown catch from sophomore Joe Boyle with 16 seconds remaining lifted the Johnnies to a 14-10 win at Carleton last Saturday in a game that decided the MIAC championship.

He caught nine passes for 145 yards and had eight carries for 34 yards. Junior linebacker Ethan Eid was named co-defensive player of the week. He had 10 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception Saturday. He shared the award with Carleton senior cornerback Kane Bechstein, who had nine tackles and two interceptions.

The Johnnies (8-2) face Wisconsin-Whitewater (9-1) in the first round of the Division III playoffs at noon Saturday at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater, Wis.
