NRA blocks UW-La Crosse from mascot name

The campus vote to name the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse eagle mascot "Eddie" doesn't fly with the National Rifle Association.

The NRA has blocked the name because it has a gun safety mascot with the same name, which is trademarked.

I can see the resemblance, but it's a long bow to draw in saying that La Crosse is an educational setting... :o

And I guess zombie heavy metal head-bangers are off the cards as well...

Hey everyone.
Blackhawks are looking good and the Cubs are on a winning streak and SJU is dominating in Golf, what more could we ask for?
Hey, TDT, what's new?

The campus vote to name the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse eagle mascot "Eddie" doesn't fly with the National Rifle Association.

The NRA has blocked the name because it has a gun safety mascot with the same name, which is trademarked.

Allowing the mascot to have the same name would be confusing because both are used in an educational setting, said NRA secretary Edward land.

Students, faculty and staff are casting another vote online through Friday.

Senior student Jack Temple is leading a petition drive to name the eagle "Colbert," after Comedy Central TV host Stephen Colbert.

The other mascot name choices return from the original contest — Baldy, Edgar, Ernie, Screech and Talon.
At first I thought 'Old Abe' after the famous Civil War eagle would work but then remembered that Eau Claire HS is named that & it probably wouldn't fly (no pun intended) at LAX.  :P

NWA says this story doesn't match their records.  I'll bet it doesn't. ;)

bennie,
How about those Ducks?  ;)
I missed the begining of the game because I was out cheering for my friends that did the Eugene Marathon. Little did I know that there would still be plenty of hockey to watch when I got home because the Wings and Ducks were having their own marathon!! ;D

Did you notice that there were some buns dragging at the end?  :D

Ovie scores three "pretty" goals, Sid scores three "ugly" goals. They all count the same, but Milwaukee's Dave Steckle gets the difference maker. Who could ask for more? The two faces of the NHL playing up to the hype. It doesn't happen often enough. I still have memories of a Caps team with a 3 - 0 lead, and not having it end well. Still look for a good long series.

Due to the hype, they probably are the two 'faces' of the NHL.  Of course, the two best all-around players are Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk.  (And they're both Wings! ;))

That, my friend, is your opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.

I don't watch that much of the Wings since their announce team is pathetically biased. My opinion, and that of many others I have heard. Therefore I won't offer an uninformed opinion about who IS the best player, only say that I do watch the Capitals, and can say that if their is a more exciting player than Ovechkin, I've not seen him. Also, you want to make a bet that Green wins the Norris, and Ovechkin wins the Hart?

There are so many aspects of being the best "all-around" player, even you might admit that being one of the league leaders in hits, along with being the leading goal scorer and second leading point getter might be something to put in the mix. He also is a relentless backchecker, and works pretty hard in the offensive zone even when he doesn't have the puck. His number of shots is a tribute to his ability to get into position to shoot, and get off a shot, that negates the arguement that he is, as one Pens fan was heard to call him, a "glorified cherrypicker."

I guess that since I am well over a decade older than my friend's three year old and can dunk on him (with his little plastic basketball hoop) due to my superior coordination and experience (due to my..ahem...advanced age), not to mention having many (many...many) more years to "pad my stats", that makes me a better all-around player! ;D And if I take the court...uh, driveway...with the Boston Celtics when he is out their with his pre-school friends, that really showcases my superior skills! 8) ;)

Wow!  Not even I thought that the Swede and Pavs made Ovie and the Kid look like 3-year-olds! :o  (10-year-olds, maybe, but 3? ;))

I would say that in their case it is more like them making the Wings look like they are 40+ year olds...but then there is Chelios! 8)

OK, I'm calling 5 minute majors on retagent and Ypsi for the throw down, and a 5 minute major with a game misconduct on bennie for being 3rd man  ;) in.

Maybe, but those graybeards DO have current possession of Lord Stanley's Cup! ;D  Didn't your mama teach you to respect your elders? :o

Fear not, I would never get into a serious throw down with MIAC regulars - you guys probably watch more hockey in a season than I do in a decade.  I rarely watch even the Wings before the 'real' season begins; of course, then I watch the Wings and their likely next round opponents - so I guess (most years) I watch nearly a season's worth of games right through the finals! ;D

[I'll beat someone to the punch - yes, there have also been some very embarassing years where I pretty much stopped watching after round one. :(]
