all of a sudden Northwestern is light years away from the playoffs

Nothing sudden about that.

Though watch out for 2011, when the playoffs get another likely speed bump! ;D

[For most of you who wouldn't know, that was Dennie Bridge's (IWU bball coach) politically incorrect assessment of facing a SLIAC champ in the first round of the playoffs.  Usual margin of victory was about 50 points.]

hardy har har,  I must really be in fantasyland as Northwestern seemed to be on the podcast every week towards the end of last year concerning the potential pool b bids.  8-2 with wins over St. Thomas and Greenville could look pretty good at the end of the year compared to the seasons of the other pool b contenders.  It's week 3, anything can happen.

Yes, until they played someone, they were considered to be mathematically in the hunt, because we didn't know how the NCAA would deal with such an abysmal strength of schedule.

Does it get any better than a Pat Coleman shutdown of AO?

Meanwhile, Johnnie up everyone.  We've got business to which to attend.  (And if you grew up or lived in Florida or similar states, "We've got business to which we have to attend to"!   Speaking of, how 'bout dem Dolphins!  Keep the ball for 45 mins + and still lose.

And now, for all you Vikings fans, the Niners are coming to town.  Be prepared.  Hide the wimin and childrin.

Yes, that's exactly how you and Keith phrased it, "winning against a WIAC school means nothing, huntingdon and lagrange have several better wins than that, I don't know why we mentioned the name Northwestern, conversation over".   By the end of this year, I'm predicting Northwestern is going to be mathematically in the hunt again.  Get used to it.

meanwhile, pick 'ems will be posted tomorrow. Thanks, and good night. And would the Colts please cover the dude with the ball when the other teams in the Wildcat?

I'm going to be unusually quiet this week. If you want to convey that as being scared of what might happen this coming weekend...you'd be right.

That said, there's a decent chance I'll be working until 3-4 a.m. this Friday night at my new gig. Two regulars are at weddings and the rest of us have to cover for them. It won't be pretty and that will make waking up a chore.

Like TC, I'll be listed as Questionable for Saturday's game...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

VOJ:

Pool B, not Pool C.   Northwestern still has a shot depending upon how Huntingdon and LaGrange do down south.  And yes, not probable due to the need for a victory against the Tommies.

Pool B, Pool C, pool of blood, Drowning Pool, pool of sweat, IT DOES NOT MATTER, YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE IN THE PLAYOFFS

Its not a matter of pushing buttons fellas, its a matter of looking at the quality of competition, the results when you have stepped up out of your league and knowing, yes after 10 years and 9 playoff appearances, knowing what it takes and you don't have it at Northwestern, maybe some day you will, but not right now.

A program has to know their limitations...and as man you need to know yours, quit writing this drivel about a playoff berth.
a few posts ago you were thinking, maybe Northwestern isn't so bad, my beloved johnnies really struggled with River Falls and Northwestern only lost by 3 after actually beating them the previous year.  Now all of a sudden Northwestern is light years away from the playoffs while the Johnnies are national title contenders?  You might have a point that the 32 best teams in D3 do not make the playoffs.  Similarily the last place ACC basketball team would kill the 15 or 16 seed in march madness every year, but it sure makes the regular season less important if the traditional powers are all guaranteed a ticket to the dance.

First stop putting words in my mouth...I never said the J's were title contenders, do I believe they are taking steps to be a conference title contender this year and a possible playoff team?  Yes, as long as the offense continues to be very efficient and the defense builds on the second half of the Concordia game...

Second, I would like to see the J's and River Falls play again, now that the J's have a few games under their belt, I think you would see a game similiar to last year's win which was not really a close game at all.

Third, Northwestern might be a program which is improving, but until you post WINS against teams that are considered to be much better than you are, you have no reason to talk about the playoffs, none, zip, zero.

Big dogs hunt in the playoffs, keep your boys on the porch...

d3football.com rankings are out.  Johnnies remain at #6.  Tommies move up to #17.  Cobbers drop out and only get a few votes.  Bethel also receiving just a few votes.

I knew we'd drop out of the top-25 but I didn't think that far. A top-25 team losing to a top-10 team usually doesn't result in that much of a change. Oh well, rankings don't play the game.

I reckon the Cobbers are the only team with a shot of being #2 out of the conference into the post season.  Cobbers win out and they are in.  No one else will win out as they still have to play the Johnnies... :)  If Bethel win everything but their game against the Johnnies, then they are unlikely to make it as a two loss team - but maybe.  The Tommies will lose at least three this year (J's, Royals and Cobbers) so they are missing the extra time most certainly.

I like it Oz!  Keep looking past BU, its worked well for you the last 3 years 8)

You're right, Northwestern isn't going to be challenging Mount Union anytime soon.  Due to the NCAA's format of providing access to the postseason to schools without an AQ seperately from the traditional power conferences, Northwestern does have a chance to get to the playoffs.  Once in the playoffs, they'd be likely to be one of the many blowout victims in the first round.

I think Northwestern would also like another crack at River Falls.  Like any school, Northwestern will be better in November than September.

As for the Johnnies, they're definitely playing like the defending MIAC champs.   The Tommies might be more talented, and Bethel has clearly been better than the J's the past couple years, but the Johnnies are the champs until proven otherwise, no extra steps necessary.

TDT, do you want to own up to being the brilliant Johnnie FB mind who thought Fred Jackson was not all that impressive??   :o

On the other side, I seem to remember a few Johnnie posters coming on the board that after that game saying they were pretty impressed with Jackson.
