WC11-True, very true.  Talking with GHC, if my memory serves me right you and my dad played under the same coach in college.  Except my father was a cobber you a cat.  Small world huh?

I just can't believe that in a newspaper instead of putting a Cobber Dlineman, they put the kids name.  Did the O line guy go look him up after the game and tell the newspaper?

DC--you should print off the article and frame it.

Cornhead98 and DC_Cobbs,
Kind of an unwritten rule that players don't post until their career is done.

A tradition unrivaled...

Here's a story outlining what SJU loses this year and who's coming back.

So apparently the SCTimes forgot how to use quotation marks. Not that I'm surprised in the least.

QuoteAlex was very, very, very good this season, offensive coordinator Jim Gagliardi said. Toward the end of the year, he was doing a great job of calling his own plays. I really trust him to know what the right situation is and to make the best possible choice.
Nice day, huh?

Shoes, it's called paraphrasing.  It's used when you don't have an exact quote.  So, Jimmy said that, but maybe not word for word.

Sounds like the Johnnies will lose some experience on the Defensive side of the ball, but I don't expect their offensive attack to slow down a bit.  I am sure they will be explosive like they were this year.  Johnnies, what defensive players are back and who will fill the gaps on the D-line?

Paraphrasing or not, they shouldn't change from the third- to first-person in the midst of a thought. A paragraph that contains "...Jim Gagliardi said...I really trust him..." needs to have some sort of distinguishing punctuation to set off what Jim said from what the writer said. Either that or the entire thought should be in the third-person: "...Jim Gagliardi indicated...he really trusts him..."

Ever taken a journalism class, Shoes?  I have.

Nah, I just painted pretty pictures for four years.

I did take a few literature classes from professors who absolutely destroyed bad writing, though, so I've had plenty of practice polishing sentences.

That said, when it comes to writing like that in the article, I trust my brain. As I read it, I had to go back and reread a few sections because I was confused as to who was saying what. As far as I'm concerned, that's a pretty good indication that the thought and punctuation structure needs a little work. Confused reader = writing that needs improvement, whether it is technically correct or not.

Duff,

Why should they not post?  They have nothing else to do this football season!  ;)

You definitely don't use first-person when you are paraphrasing the guy. Maybe that's my 12 years at a national publication talking but I'm pretty sure that should be covered in "a journalism class."

More likely the quotes got dropped off in the process of posting it online than it was intentional paraphrasing.

Don't worry -- you're confused for a reason. It is definitely not technically correct.
