Do have to mention that the storming the field at the end was pretty lame.  There are certain times when that's warranted, this was not one of them.

I can only remember 3, maybe 4 games in my 20 years of watching games in Collegeville when the students stormed the field.  One was after the Simpson playoff game in the late nineties.  Truth is a full scale brawl practically broke out between the two teams at the end of the game.  Luckily the student section was nowhere near the size as yesterday.  It could have been ugly.
The other was 409...not much reason to explain that one.
The other two were Bethel and St. Thomas this year.
In defense of the students....they have shown more exuberance and passion than I ever witnessed in the late 80's.  The Bethel and St. Thomas games were big.  Bethel had beat us 3 years straight and it looked like it would be 4.  After watching the Vikings game today a 49 yard last minute field goal is even hard for pros.  Yesterday's game had 13,000 fans and a Tommie team that was trying to prove that they were ready to take control of the MIAC.  It's what rivalries are about  They didn't tear down the goal post or trash anything that I know of.
I can almost guarantee that if BU and St. Thomas win those games their students would have stormed the SJU field.

I recall going to games at O'Shaughnessy when I was a young lad and watching Tommie students storm the field after beating the Johnnies.  The PA announcer kept trying to get the students off of the goalposts by reminding them "your tuition will go up!"  And since they actually beat the Johnnies, we all know that was A LONG time ago.

Great tailgate, great atmosphere, great day for a football game!

I thought the Johnnie O-line absolutely owned the Tommie defense.  They moved the line of scrimmage up 3 yards every play, and UST would not stop it.  In that way, I thought the Toms defense was vastly overrated-- SJU ran the ball right at the throat of the Tommie defense-- and would have had almost 250 yards rushing (taking away the punt craziness) and a 10 minute time of possession advantage.  Had SJU stuck with its game plan (as opposed to going to screen passes et al.) it should have been a blowout.

Credit the Toms for sticking with it after the Johnnie special teams made some major execution errors.  They had a chance to steal the game.  Any second-guessing on Caruso's decision to send it into OT instead of going for 2?  It didn't fit his MO of fake punts in the second quarter, flea flickers and throwback passes to go to OT-- not to mention it allowed the Johnnies to make a play to win the game.  Which is what happened!

The two scoring plays for UST were very nice plays-- and preyed on a major SJU weakness-- but it did not feel that UST really ever threatened.  The Toms never really seemed to adjust well.  Wonka, from my vantage point it was most definitely a block in the back by Waldvogel-- but the officials were consistent only in their inconsistency both ways, so I don't think it would have mattered.  My God, the holding that the purple got away with!

Retagent, as a dyed in the wool Gopher hockey fan, I strongly agree that the Combatitive Indigenous Peoples (aka Sue) are as guilty as you say, and are a leap above the rest of the WCHA in their gooning prowess.  But what do you expect when you recruit overage Canadians?   ;D

Ha, you guys are funny with the hockey-I thought Denver had the goon thing covered.
Faunch-was that the Simpson game in the late 80's, with Rickey Gale (sp?). That was a hell of a game with SJU puttng up big numbers in the first half and Simpson in the second half. SJU wins on a pass with a, what, a few seconds left. Yea, there was almost a good riot-and lots of spill over in the parking areas with fans yapping.

PRF (which I guess stands for "Pretty Rude F#@$) I think your comment regarding the broadcast is quite unfair to our guru Pat Coleman and his d3 crew. After all he does for we fans, is that the best you can come up with?

He is taking a shot at the Johnnies radio crew...

Pat, any idea when the 1st regional rankings come out?

We're led to believe it will be after the Week 8 games, a week from Wednesday, but the NCAA handbook doesn't actually commit to that. I don't think it can be a week later, but I will be trying to find out if there's one a week earlier.

Pat, PRF, How dumb do you think I am? I knew exactly who he was talking about, I just wanted to jab him for not knowing WHAT, he's talking about.

That doesn't mean that everyone else who reads this board, including the lurkers, know.

THIS.

Reding ran the ball 32 times and never got more than 8 yards on a carry.  He wasn't making people miss and he wasn't running around people.  Still, he ended up with 122 yards and a respectable 3.8 yards per carry because the line was getting a huge push and Reding was able to fall forward for 3, 4, or 5 yards rather than getting stuffed for 1 or 2 yards like what was happening earlier in the year. When you don't trust your passing game (or have the ability) to make big plays down the field, 2nd-and-5 versus 2nd-and-8 is a huge advantage.

Re: UND

- If their hockey team is cheap, at least they aren't as bad as their Football team. After paying the NAIA University of Sioux Falls $60,000 to come and lose to their FCS glory, USF went off the script. The Cou dominated the Sioux in every aspect en route to a 28-13 win. Then again, the way USF runs their program, they may actually have had more scholarship players and certainly had more guys juiced. Even still, it was funny imagining the Sioux and their fans gettin humiliated.

Re: Fans storming the field

- I think you've got to leave room for the fans to get caught up in the moment. It's one of the things that makes sports so great. I know 409 qualified and I'd agree that Bethel and UST were those kinds of games as well.

On the other hand, the fans need to make sure they are only celebrating with their team. After 409 two SJU fans (I think students) went out of their way to run up to me and yell in my face "you guys f#*?^ng suck!" granted they were idiots and probably the exception, but it's stuff like that which can lead to regretable incidents after great football.

Another blown call by the officials in the SJU/UST game.... Bobby Klint shoulda had an interception in the first half along the west sideline...

I suspect that if St. Thomas ever moved to D-I FCS, those 64 football scholarships would help level the playing field a bit.

Pat,

Are you referring to the ones they already have  8) or do you think FCS would allow them an additional 64?

Your brother's comments on the Star Tribune website about last season's game (video and still photographic evidence  :o :o :o ) has me wondering when Oliver Stone will be brought in to direct "Robbery on Snelling Ave...a D3football production"

When the journalist becomes part of the story, they have failed.

In case anyone missed it ...

QuoteSt. Thomas has a very good team this year. And St. John's team (who I've seen play a 20 games in the last 6 years) has a lackluster team in a lackluster conference. Last year SJU won on a blown call by a referee (photographic and video proof is on D3football.com) so to come out and claim that it's a black cloud of UST is a misnomer.

Ryan tries to give a compliment to UST but then pretty much undoes it with his gratuitous swipe at Saint John's.   Closed circuit to Ryan - go to other games.  We don't need your photos anyway.

If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Ha nice sleuthing Redtooth.  And Clark you've really been on your game lately.  +K

Tmerton:  Email me tomorrow.  Do I have a story for you...

Lots more to get to.  Looks like Veek has been telling some "white lies" and TC has called him on it.  Kudos TC for a job well done.  Nothing sneaks by the crack staff of JF.com...

Wonka can you please explain this "temper tantrum" on the sideline by Ryan Coleman?  Sounds ridiculous and juicy...
