Double0....rooting for the UST(d) just because they are a MIAC team would be the equivilent to Green Bay rooting for the Vikings in the playoffs just because they are both from the NFC nort...... :-\  Yea it would be nice and make your division look better but it doesn't take the absolute veneomous taste for them out of your mouth. ;D

...but at this time of the year you should be pulling for conference foes when your team is out of the hunt.

I don't follow that logic.  What good is it to SJU if UST or any other MIAC team does well?  My allegiance is to the Johnnies, not the MIAC.  Tuck the Fommies.

Not that I care who roots for who but for me I am on the Coe bandwagon this week.  To see the IIAC have the chance to play for the third straight regional final is good for the conference IMHO.  My allegiance is and always will be for the Dutch.  Rooting for Coe does not change that since the Dutch are not playing this weekend.  It will give out conference a little more prestige.  Maybe next year the seeding will be a lttle different.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Back home after the trip to SJU.
Thanks to JR yesterday-great tailgate.
Veek-good to see you and your Dad and thanks very much for gilling the Polish-you do an excellent job.
Good to see, L. Bean, TC, Duff, TDT, VOJ, 105, Dusty, Carbo and the rest of the gang.
I have seen several of those types of playoff games by SJU, 89, and 91 come to mind. I kinda thought SJU was better prepared than that these days.
Coe was a solid team and took advantage of the SJU mistakes.
Gutty performance by SJU's Boyle.
SJU needs a playmaker at WR-hope they find one.
Looking forward to seeing UWW play at some point in the playoffs, Flash can I hop on the bandwagon and have a groovy brew at the Perk?
In the end, still conference champs.

I was looking at the roster and noticed that even though we lose some very good players via graduation, quite a number of impact players return. In regard to the WR situation that Zip raised - What happened to Bryan Virnig? I seem to remember he did quite well in spot duty a year or two ago at RB. Since we have a plethora (Johnnie education shining through) of running backs, might he be a replacement for Overman? Also, I noticed a couple Freshman with good size, 6" 3" - 6' 5", and 195 -210. One from Texas, and another with a familiar last name. Also a couple other returnees with similar physical attributes. Any 411 on these guys? Can they play?

New to the MIAC board, but I have to ask all the Johnnie fans a question, where does all of your red-headed (pun intended) step child hate for the Tommies come from? I know it's a rivalary, but at this time of the year you should be pulling for conference foes when your team is out of the hunt. By all means, you're program's the one that been on top of the conference mountain forever. I would expect that the type of hostility that some of you have shown for the Tommies from some of the other conference schools that have been taking their medicine from you guys, not the other way around. Makes me question if you guys sense a potential change at the top with this new coach from St. Thomas? Why else would you root against UST or any other conference school at this time of year? And don't tell me it's because you can never pull for a rival, because that's ds.

Double O,

First, welcome to the board.

Second, how long have you been following the MIAC?

Third, What age group are you in? A.) Student B.) 20 something- but not a student C.) Over 30

If you answer these questions, you will have answered your original question.

I think you've nailed it (which makes me wonder about the age and/or maturity of the two posters after yours).

A few years ago our arch-rival (I'm IWU, so for anyone of my era that would be Millikin) unexpectedly won the women's basketball national title.  I was quite shocked at how delighted I was (in fact, I went out for a bottle of champagne).  As a student (or even 20-something) I would have puked before I celebrated anything Millikin did.

While I despise all CCIW teams other than IWU during the conference season, before and after I am totally a fan.  If the conference looks better, our wins look better.

The story would have been better if you had added the part where you and your rivals gathered around the campfire and sang Kumbuya.

Ypsi...if I am one of the 2 posters after, I graduated from SJU in '92 so you can do the math on my age. I was there for 2 of the last 3 losses to UST(d) those being in '90, '92, and '97. The true hatred for the Tommies can not really be described to an outsider of the MIAC, but sufice it to say, it is real and it is true. I could possibly find myself being happy for another MIAC team in the playoff, but not UST.  So as the old saying goes, "My two favorite teams are the Johnnies, and who ever is playing St. Thomas!"   ;D

Gotcha.  I was in my 50s when Millikin won that title, so can't swear how I would have reacted at roughly 40. ;)

Now I have the philosophy that the better they look, the better we look when we beat 'em!

Mr. Ypsi

Stanbob,

I still have no burning desire to sing Kumbaya with Big Blue alums.  But their national title makes it so much more satisfying now that the Titans are the national power in women's bball - and have run the conference two years straight - and beat #1 ranked WashU yesterday.

Beating a power means you are even more of a power.  Beating nobody doesn't make you anything in particular.

If Tommies are just garbage anyway, what's the point of beating them? ::)

A masterful work of misreading and redirection, Ypsi.  105 was answering the question of where the "hate" for all things Tommie came from, deliberately not answering the question of it's legitimacy.  In fact, by not addressing the legitimacy he pretty much endorses the "hate."  The reasonable supposition that this new tribal policeman is a Tommie supporter but not openly declaring so is one more thing in support of the notion that Tommies Suck.  How surprising is it that he pops out only a week into the playoffs after a Tommie victory and a Johnnie loss?

As to the immaturity of Duff and #57, I think you are unfair.  If tribalism is the moral position, what says that MIAC comes first?  Duff has great affinity for Linfield through his mighty contents against them.  Does that make him immature?  57's analogy of the Pack fan goes unanswered, powerful though it is.  Maybe because it is powerful.

So basically, Tommies suck.  And the fact that they beat Monmouth does not change that fact.

DoubleO

I am in my mid 30's and have been following the D3 football (MIAC included) since the early 90's. Not that I see the relevance. I hear what you're saying about the hatred towards the Tommies and I get the age old adage about 'your two favorite teams' in the regular season, but come playoff time (like it or not) they're representing you and every other MIAC team. Liken it to the Big Ten, it reflects on the whole conference when their conference champ goes and gets it's arse raped by the SEC representative in whatever bowl game they're in.

sju#57

Ypsi, I can agree with that philosophy as far as pretty much any other team in the MIAC, with maybe Bethel being the other exception. :-\  Watching the Tommies make it past next week to me would be equivilant to being a Yankees fan and watching Boston win the world series a couple yrs back. :'(  Would just make the hatred deeper.

Easy there OzJohnnie. You're making a lot of assumptions in your post. I don't have to remind you what assumptions do to you, right?

Uh... because it's a rivalry?  Tradition, legacy, general Tommie suckitude, etc.

Oz.....you forgot...because it's just a whole hell of a lot of fun!!!!! ;D

Mr. Ypsi

I will now attempt to gracefully withdraw. :P

Perhaps the Johnnie/Tommie thing is beyond what I experienced as a Titan with the Blue - I doubt that it is for an undergrad of that era (Millikin has fallen so far in recent years that it is barely a rivalry anymore), but I should know better than to intrude in a Calvin/Hope, Wabash/DePauw. Amherst/Williams, etc. feud! ;D

Please forget I was ever here! ;)
