I thought Wesley should have given the Warhawks more of a game today.  I guess this proves how dominant the West is and how much weaker the East is.  Good job Hawks and beat MUC.  Thats all I got.

Sad news:
Former Johnnie baseball player and great senator Eugene McCarthy as died at 89. RIP. Tremendous guy.

I was just going to post this, repete.  For those who had the chance to meet him, Clean Gene was a brilliant man and independant statesman.  He didn't politick-- rather, he represented, and he knew the Federalist papers so well I have half a mind to think he helped write them in a former life.

Prayers to his family.  SJU has lost several amazing alums in the past month.

It is hoped that those who would depreciate Senator McCarthy will keep their peace for a respectable and respectful period.

Cobbernation,

It proves that Whitewater was better than Wesley TODAY!

If Wesley had won I suppose it would have been a fluke and the west would of course still be dominant.

And if only the NCAA Gods had seen fit to send the Cobbers to the (East, North or South pick one) bracket it would be you that is in the Stagg. Ya gotta beat'em sometime so what does it matter when you beat 'em? You had a fair shot this year.

The west has won 3 of the last 9 Stagg Bowls. What regions have won the other 6? It would seem to me that does not make you the dominant region over the last 9 years. And if Mount Union manages to win (we don't stand a chance you know) it will be because we received a free pass to the Stagg from the NCAA. We never had to play a game.

That hurts.

I called because for a brief moment I had thoughts of driving to WW for the game. Scouting assignment you know. But as with many things that too did pass.

Gene was a true giant, and those of us fortunate enough to spend time with him over the years are saddened by his passing.

One thing to remember-- while Gene may have attended SJU, he taught at St Thomas for a decade and it was from there that he launched his first politcial campaign.  Betwen the liberal Benedictine teaching and the pragmaticism of CST, he learned to bring people together.

If he could get Johnnies & Tommies alike to support him and vote for him, he was truly a uniter, not a divider.

The baseball field in his (and my) hometown was dedicated in his honor a few years back and he made the trip, despite failing health. He seemed to know everyone there, even though he hadnt been in town in close to 20 years.  He even managed to get Pat Ruesse to laugh, which is no easy feat.

Thanks Gene...godspeed.

raiderguy, Settle down, will ya? An ass-kicking like that, especially when UWW was running the risk of overlooking Wesley due to their two huge wins the last couple of weeks, proves that UWW was better than Wesley EVERYDAY! The only day Wesley beats UWW is if the Warhawk's coach makes his players sleep outside in the Wisconsin freezing cold the night before the game. When they wake up with frozen nads then maybe, just maybe they have enough on their minds and are in just the right amount of pain for Wesley to win. And Wesley would still probably need 7 turnovers to have a chance on that day.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Gee Raider guy, how many teams in the East/North/South have won the Stagg Bowl in the last nine years. Let me give you a hint   ---   ONE. That makes a REGION Dominant? And that one team, Mount Union, for the uninformed, had put quite a few Monkey Stomps on their opponents from those other Regions, not the West, on their way to the Championship, only to be given at least a good game in most of those years. Please !!! a little less Decaf might be called for.

Also, although I'm sure that Gene McCarthy was a fine and good man, I'm old enough to remember what happened as a result of following his line of thought. Millions slaughtered by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge and others in Southeast Asia when the US pulled out. Nonetheless, he, and his family are in this fellow Johnnies prayers

raiderguy

Wow,

I thought you could state an opinion without being the target of smite, smite, smite and one more smite for good measure.

So on what day only does Linfield beat WW? WW was sure not looking ahead last week.

My point was beating Wesley does not prove the "west" is a     dominant region as was stated. WW was better yesterday. They may be better next week too. That does not make any region stonger than another based on one game.

My bit of frustration is there is a theme some how the west is getting screwed because this year there happens to be many great teams in your region. That should not change the way brackets are set up just because of W & L. in the region. Next year it might be the East???????????? and so they should send teams from that area to the West just to balance out the bracket?
It just wasn't fair that WW wasn't sent to the North so Linfield could skate into the Stagg to face them? You had a chance to beat them. How would the Stagg results differed? You had home field advantage all the way through.

Retagent

Thank you for making my point!

I did not say the north was a dominant region because of that, just as three wins in  nine years does not make any more a statement for the west.
In the last 15 years of the Stagg
9 wins from the North
5 from the West
1 from the East.

In the overall breakdown of teams
30 representatives..
11 from the North
8 from the East
6 from the West
5 from the South

If we are going to pick regions that are dominant no matter who the teams are it appears the North and the East have sent nearly 2/3 of the participants. How does that make the West the dominant region as is constantly being touted.

Decafffffffffffffffffffffffffff?

Thanks,

I'll try it.

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

Just a crazy notion  but is anyone from this area headed for the Stagg that might want to share a ride and expenses?
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

raiderguy, this has nothing to do with "on what day only does Linfield beat UWW" because that was not the point of the debate. The statement you made was "It proves UWW was better than Wesley TODAY!" which insinuates you are trying to make a case that Wesley could beat UWW, and that it just happened to work out for the Warhawks this time. No way. UWW is so much better than Wesley, I don't see how anyone could try and make that kind of case. They got beat by more than 50, dude! If you're going to try and make a case for Wesley, I'm sorry but I can't see it.

And getting back to the East, cobbernation is right. Please take a look at how the East rep has done the past 6 straight years. I don't believe they have won a single game once they have to play someone outside of that region. It is not a one year thing, man. It is the norm. Most of these years one team in this region demolishes everyone else and then gets beat, sometimes badly, when they have to play someone from a different region. That does not make much of a case for the strength of this region. I agree MUC has been the best team in DIII, but the West has been the toughest region. We're looking at possibly three straight titles from 3 different teams, and 4 out of the last 7. How can you say that the West has not been the toughest region?

``Most dominant'' might be a semantic battle that is tough to win, but there can certainly be a strong case made for the West being the deepest or most balanced.

As for Raiderguy's assertion that moving WW to the North would have allowed Linfield to skate -- that's pure BS. Linfield still had three other top 10 teams in its bracket -- including two it had never beaten.  We know LC didn't skate over Concordia and we'll never know if this year's LC team would have ``skated'' over SJU -- and I'm sure both sides would have loved to find out.

Raiderguy, you might want to post that on the WIAC board, too, if you haven't already. You could pick some people up there and split the last 14 hours or so of the drive.
