What's even funnier, is that both Augsburg and Carleton have won an MIAC title more recently that St. Thomas('90) and GAC('87), talk about a dry spell. ;D

I think the biggest thing that face the Knights moving forward after Brann's decision is to make sure that the recruiting doesn't drop.  One of the major reasons Carleton has been at the bottom of the MIAC in recent history was the lag in recruiting during the coaching change that took place when Brann took over, that first year (Brann was hired too late in the spring to factor into the recruiting) there was a freshmen class of about 8 players which led to going from around 70 my freshmen year ('99), to around 40 in 2001, and two seasons without a win.  Now that they've finally got the numbers up, and some solid talent in their younger classes, they can't afford to slip up again.  It will be interesting to see what direction they go with in the hiring of the new coach.

Story on Brann from the Beloit Daily News...

Excerpt:
Quote"My wife and I were ready to pull out of Northfield (Minn.) yesterday and it was really hard," he said. "It's not the buildings or the cosmetic makeup of the institution. It's the people who are there that I'm going to miss. I recruited every young man on that football team. It's really hard for me to walk away from them."

Great article by Austin Murphy on the need for DI Playoffs

Here's an exerpt:

Linnemann and the Johnnies saw fishmongers throw salmon to one another at the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle. They drank deeply of the cultural offerings available in Abilene; Linnemann returned to Minnesota with a vast belt buckle. His most indelible memory from the trip, he says, "was playing a game of six-on-six football in the hotel pool in Pella, Iowa." The game came to a temporary halt when legendary head coach John Gagliardi happened upon the scene.

"For Crissakes," he implored his players, "take your helmets off!"

It wouldn't do to take on the Central Dutch with waterlogged headgear.

"Talk about coming together as a team," says Linnemann. "That's an experience everyone who plays college football should be able to have."

I started laughing out loud in class when I envisioned the team with tehir helmets on in the pool!
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

KR,

You forgot the best quote of the whole article that was supplied by the 2005 Gagliardi Award winner (thanks J-Club and SJU!) Brett Elliott....

After getting Wally Pipped by Alex Smith at Utah, Brett Elliott transferred to Linfield College, a Division III powerhouse in Oregon. Last season he threw 61 touchdown passes while leading the Wildcats to the D-III national title, a journey that added five weeks to their season. "I went to bowls when I was at Utah," Elliott told me, "and they're fun. It's definitely a good time. But nothing can beat the excitement of preparing for a different team, then beating them, then preparing for another team, week after week after week. It was exhilarating."

ROR,

Are you still in Chicago?  If so, I hope your buddy 56321 took you out for dinner last evening.  If not, could you rehearse the weather forecast for Woodbury, MN for me... :-*

I know Walch, Carleton Assistant, was a finalist for the MAC spot.  If he doesn't get the MAC gig, I wonder if he would throw his hat in for the Carleton head spot.  Nice to see fresh faces in the MIAC at the coaching position but sad to see a good young coach/recruiter like Brann leave for the MWC.

Nice to see all the stories in the newspapers around Beloit talking about how competitive and solid the MIAC is.

I've deprived you guys of my presence for far too long.

finsleft-  You missed out on a helluva party on Saturday night at the Carpet.  It was a doozy.

I'm pretty surprised about Brann leaving Carleton.  It seemed they were heading in the right direction...hopefully the new coach can continue that.

Any Stagg Bowl watching parties this weekend?
Heaven isn't too far away,
Closer to it every day

Frank - If by Stagg Bowl you mean watching Tubby's (as in father of Saul) on the tube, I'll be there. Oh, and put down Jan. 21 down in your calendar. That means you too, fins.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Is your sister going to stick around and party?

So the Miller bigwigs are going to be out with us tonight when we are working.  I figured it was appropriate to have 7 Hamm's before work then.
