TimeForChange2,

No, sorry. He's actually better at predictions than chasing MILF's.  ;D

The SJU d-line looked really lackluster yesterday.  Shed some blocks!  No need to push around an o-lineman all day.

A tradition unrivaled...

Did the Times pull this article/comment? I can't locate it,but it leads right into TDT's "mystique" for all we know TimeForChange2 is just another one of TDT's monikers.  ;)

Quick impressions:

UST is looking tough, and while I do think STO's defensive scheme is terrible, they still aren't a bad team overall.

Bethel could be very tough. I am giving almost no credit to the fact that they ran all over a Carleton defense that could've let up 300 yds to Macalaster, but Flannery ran hard, fast, and has good moves. Their D didn't show me they can handle a good passing scheme (watch out for Auggie Tech), but they should improve.

The only thing I know for certain about SJU this year is...I still don't like them. Their O could carry them, but when you don't have the gamebreaker's like Fritz Waslkfldkfvgl, Flannery, or Leon Clark, your scheme and good players need to execute to near perfection against a good D to put up big numbers. I think they can do it, but I don't know if they will. As everyone's said, their D needs to step up to not make their offense do that.

We should be able to figure out who timeforchange2 is. Who would want to take a crack at TDT? Assume it's a member of d3football.com. There are 11,652 members on the boards - as of noon eastern. So all we have to deal with is 11,651 suspects.

Ha that is pretty epic Stanbob.  I have no problem being ripped.  I do have a problem with the insinuation that JohnnieFootball.com or the Stiftungsfestivities tailgate party is some sort of clique or exclusive group.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  We meet scores of new people on a weekly basis and it is always a pleasure.  Virtually everyone is extraordinarily friendly.  Everyone is welcome at the tailgate parties and there is always more than enough food & beverages.

Johnnie D needs to step up.  They are giving up over 300 yards a game and have only one QB sack in 3 games.  In addition teams are averaging over 100 yards rushing a game.
If they don't step up, make stops and pressure the QB we will be looking at a 3-3 SJU team come the late afternoon on October 9th.

Question:  I know Coach Gagliardi is successful with the concept of 'No contact" during practice.  Can you list how you pick your starters.  What do you look for. What makes them stand out above the rest.  Characteristics, attitude, leadership?  thanks.

I'm not sure what you think no contact means or how SJU runs practice, but to me, no contact just means not taking players to the ground. The key elements for each position don't require hitting:

Receivers are still catching balls, getting open, and getting their blocking assignments.
Running backs are still finding holes, getting to their pass block assignments, and making catches out of the backfield.
No teams let QBs get hit.
DBs are about technique, reading the play quickly, and making breaks. Nothing really changing here.
LBs are about reading the plays quickly, getting their drops, and filling holes. All of these can be done without bringing down the back (though it's going to happen occasionally).
O-line/D-line still get their fits and fight inside.

The main difference is that you're telling your defense to take their pursuit and not take the ball carrier down. Also, the obvious things like don't crunch a receiver over the middle, let a receiver get the jump ball, don't cut, etc...

Maybe the SJU players sit around and sing Kum bay yah at practice, but I doubt it.

USTBench

St. Olaf's webcast was pretty awesome except this little nugget delivered in the 2nd quarter: "UST is exploiting some weaknesses in the St. Olaf secondary. Kind of different from a few years ago where a guy like Waldvogel wouldn't have gotten a sniff against the Oles, because they literally had shut down corners."

St. Olaf was money because they could do things like put up 85 against Carleton. Not because their defense owned.
