I was able to attend the Carleton-Augsburg game this past weekend and after seeing the Knights play live was a nice change.  The offense is strong and the defense is rapidly improving.  Schmid has been playing extremely well at QB so far this year and there is some good young talent at WR.  If the D can keep improving the next couple weeks they could put up some fights at the end of the year.

Both teams were feeling the effects of the wind, no surprise for two teams that like to air it out.  When the Knights had the wind at their back, they outscored Auggie Tech 28-0.  When the Auggies had the wind, they were outscored Carleton 28-10.  Partially due to the wind, both teams ran more than I have seen, with Lien looking particularly strong.

I also had a chance to check out the flood damage and talk to Ramler about it.  The water levels are still high, but the field is no longer underwater.  There is still standing water on the practice fields.  The ground level of the stadium has been destroyed and will have to be replaced.  The field didn't look like it was in too bad of shape, all things considered, but the lack of facilities will shut the field down for the rest of the season.  The news that I have heard is that the Knights will play the rest of their games in the road.  This means extra home games for Olaf, Mac, and St. John's.  It will be interesting to see the effect this has on the team, though all the players I talked to were excited about the opportunity to play another game in Collegeville.

Washed up, Is Northfield High School's field not an option for Carleton? What a way to finish the season, even if it does involve them getting the opportunity to play in Collegeville.

Suggestion for a classy move for SJU....donate all the gate receipts and concession profits to Northfield and/or Carleton College.  Maybe someone could suggest this to Tom Stock at SJU.

In addition let Carleton wear their home uniforms and have Johnnie sidleline...let the Carleton PA
announcer call the game...do whatever they can do to let Carleton have a "home game."

Not sure what the reasoning is and not sure if the decision is final.  This is just what I have heard.  It was a classy move by Northfield High to let us use their field.  Pure speculation, but it may be that adding another couple sporting events is just too much wear and tear for the field.

I think these are great suggestions.  Home uniforms would be a nice touch and I am sure that there are people in Northfield that could use the help. There were some local businesses that looked to be hit pretty hard that may not have the financial backing that Carleton has.

My guess is that Northfield High is worried about their field getting all torn up.

That's rough...not easy to be on the road every game. Good to see them win on Saturday, looking forward to watching the Olaf game in person.

As for the UST - SJU game. Sounds like it was a battle and things went just enough of UST's way. Don't go crowning them MIAC champs just yet though. While they seem to have proven they are the most talented team in the MIAC. They still have a tough matchup against Bethel, and like Bethel v Carleton in '07, any MIAC team can beat any other team in this league.

I think they will finish off the season, but just wanted to take a step back first.

St. Thomas 34,
St. John's 14

Just got back from the weekend and had to read the board to catch up - and I find TC's pre-game pick.  Geez, even TDPT only picked the Toms by 3.  That's the kind of point spread that comes from not watching any games, TC.  BTW, there were a couple of beers left in the trunk after the game.

Congrats to the Toms - I thought we had you.

Willy Wonka

Not sure if anyone else noticed it, but Gags had quite the kicking quote in Saturday's gameday program (via David Burns' favorite memory). Surprised none of the other papers were able to pick up on that thing after the way things unfolded...

RE: Carleton

I wrote a story about the Carleton flooding last week. Carleton's media guru told me the football field was probably done for the season, but Northfield HS *and* St. Olaf had offered up their athletic facilities for the Knights, pending prior commitments.

I haven't scoured the schedule to see how that might work for football, but I've got to imagine the Knights would find either of those options more appealing than going on the road every week...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

AuggieBacker

WashedUp,

I was at the Augsburg-Carleton game on Saturday as well.  The wind was definitely a factor but both quarterbacks played well.  Schmid for Carleton was impressive.  I'd heard about him but this was my first time actually seeing him.  He's a big dude!  Even though my Auggies lost the game it was very entertaining.  I thought it was going to be a route after Carleton went up 14-0 but Augsburg battled back and made a game of it.  That tackle for a loss late in the 4th quarter on the Augsburg running back seemed to be the clincher.

I just finished cutting the video and uploading it to my YouTube site.  Here it is if anyone is interested...

First Half Highlights

Second Half Highlights

I'm planning on attending next weekends game at St. Thomas and if I do I'll get some video and share it here.

Enjoy!  ;)

Fantastic job with the highlight tapes.  You've got some real high quality clips there.

My thanks to everyone who attended the Stiftungsfestivities. The largest crowd we have ever had. Thanks to Liberty Mutual for providing the delicious soup. Thanks to Tom Emmer and Tom Horner for making an appearance. Mr. Horner, a Tommie grad who was present with his Johnnie son, now knows that the impossible can happen, i.e. a Tommie win over the Johnnies and a win in the governor's race in November over Emmer and Dayton. :o For some reason I thought Michele Bachmann would have been present.

I would have to respectfully disagree on the appearances of the the various candidates.  Frankly I wish they would all stay away from these events...liberal, moderate or conservative politicians included.  I was there for a football game and homecoming celebration and didn't need to see a bunch of political signs and stickers everywhere.  It's bad enough I have to see ads on TV and hear ads on the radio every 5 minutes and then yesterday when I went to get a beverage out of my car be surrounded by Emmer signs and supporters (no not jock straps).  Hroner seemed like a nice enough guy but I wasn't there to be surrounded by political campaigning.

Johnnies fall to #23, but they are only team in Top 25 with 2 losses. Maybe just as important, UWEC is up to #17. If the Johnnies can win out, I think they may still be in the mix, even if it would mean a first round game at UWW or UST.
