Frankly, I'm surprised he's never been punched before.

Me too. Best part of the story is the guy's a St. Thomas professor. As much as I hate to side with a Tommie, I almost have to this time.

Good luck to the Johnnie wrestlers this weekend!  SJU qualified wrestlers at seven of the ten weights--a first!  A team title seems a little unlikely, but it's definitely possible.

More Tommie news. Could their games be on WCCO, which just lost Gopher sports?

Anselmo was wistful yet mischievous, referring to the Gophers' "long and lucious history" with the Good Neighbor, adding there were "significant opportunities" as a result of the departure.
Such as? "Play-by-play with a different football team, a college team."
Who? Wisconsin? Minnesota-Duluth? "Well, we did do a St. Thomas football game with Dave Lee and Mike Max and I thought it went marvelously," Anselmo replied.
As charming as Tommie football is, I'm not sure I'd call it significant for one of the four highest-rated Twin Cities stations.

From one of the most powerful radio stations in the upper Midwest to St. Thomas football, in just a few years. I'm sure there have been bigger falls before - Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson - but what a step down it would be for the Good Neighbor.

Actually, I will comment on the local situation.  What's the chance of lightening striking twice in the same family?  Very, very slim, just as a matter of probabilities.  Given that we would love to see the House that John Built continue after John has left, what are the odds of lightening striking from left field with someone of a different pedigree?  Equally if not even more slim.  I don't envy the very difficult decision.

My thoughts from an outsider.  It seems that football to the people in charge at SJU is very important and when that day comes when Gags is not longer in charge at SJU the administration will continue to fully support football and that means the program will continue to be very good.

I would just look at places like Central and Linfield that value football and when they had major coaching changes the programs had a "transition" period but eventually got back to their place on the national scene.  However, SJU might be different because of just how long Gags has been at SJU.  On a slightly smaller scale it reminds me of Frosty at PLU who was that program for over 30 years.  When he stepped down PLU gave the job to his son without thought.  While PLU has had a couple of ok years and seems to be improving they have never been the same since Frosty stepped down.

So, how cautious with that guy's students be this year when going up to ask a question about class?  I recommend that clarifications of those curly home economics questions be asked while standing at least four feet away.  Preferably with a desk in the middle.  But whatever you do, don't tap the guy on the shoulder when you're being followed by a bunch of kids.  I mean, that really asking too much.

Foggy memory from the mid-70s and absolutely no idea if it is true, but ....

There was a story/legend/myth passed on to me by a prof (class of '61) that Dumonceaux in his younger years once swung out on a rope over the old hockey rink during a game. SJU played outdoors on campus then. The rink was then next to Joe??? Hall (both were in the area of Sexton Commons now).

Even if it was not true, it's a good story ... not unlike drunken bowling at 3 a.m. in Rat Hall and telling Bro. Willie we were the intramural bowling team.

Guy goes into a bar, & there's a robot bartender.
The robot says, "What will you have?"
The guy says, "Martini."
The robot brings back the best martini ever and says to the man, "What's your IQ?"
The guy says," 168."
The robot then proceeds to talk about physics, space exploration, life at St. John's and medical technology.

The guy leaves, but he is curious...So he goes back into the bar.
The robot bartender says, "What will you have?"
The guy says, "Martini."
Again, the robot makes a great martini gives it to the man and says, "What's your IQ?"
The guy says, "100."
The robot then starts to talk about Nascar, Budweiser and John Deere tractors.
The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time.

He goes back into the bar.
The robot says, "What will you have?"
The guy says, "Martini," and the robot brings him another great martini.
The robot then says, "What's your IQ?"
The guy says, "Uh, about 50."
The robot leans in real close and says, "So, what year did you graduate from St. Thomas?"

Ha!  Someone play the laugh track.  The best part?  I didn't see that punch line coming.  Out loud chuckle.

Ok.  Many of you may think that my continual slams on New Zealanders are some sort of undue bigotry that I have picked up since living on the fair shores of Oz.  But let me tell you, friends, that not all discriminating beliefs are wrong.  An argument could be made that the world would benefit from a little Easter Island syndrome in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

From AOLNews we'll see if this one gets past the decency police...

"Stallion Semen Served Up in New Zealand as New Energy Drink"

I can't bring myself to quote it.

Looks like the Johnnies are performing well early on in the NCAA Wrestling Tournament.  Sandy's the only one to lose.  Henle, Baarson, Pfarr, Baxter, and Willaert are all 1-0.  Batsukh is 2-0!  There are some lopsided victories in there, too!

Hey, Duff;

It's hard for me to see the results on my blackberry.  Have four Johnnies remained in the championship bracket with now two out and one still wrestling?  If so, what a performance on day one.
