I cringe a little bit when I hear about D3 being the home of the real "student-athlete", or the last truly amateurs playing only for the love of the game.  Weren't we just having a debate about a hike in ticket prices?  The Tommies and Johnnies both have radio contracts and their game drew 16,000 people last year.  This isn't amateur athletics.  If you've ever seen chariots of fire, the administrator of the college thought it was wrong for Abrahams to hire a personal track coach.

How about the Wayzata football website...look at that bling!  Sure looks "professional" to me.  I actually get a bit of a giggle at a high school football championship ring.  At home games they have a Culver's stand and a number of other "sponsors" selling goodies.  They also have a guy that Tweets play by play.  If the website and success can help bring in a running back from Coon Rapids....My intention isn't to rip Wayzata as much as it is to note that high school and small college sports at times "mirror" the higher levels.

Wasn't AO's younger cousin a stand-out player for Wayzata Football a couple years back?  ::)

What college is he currently playing "professional" football at ??

I can't imagine what the sponsorship and corporate support is like in football crazed states like Ohio, Florida and Texas.  It must be a circus at the high school games.
Even here in the Twin Cities there are 4 or 5 high school game on video web-cast every Friday night.

Anyone know how I can listen to an audio broadcast on an android phone?  I can't seem to open the link from Gojohnnies.com and we don't have a radio in the room.

I lived in Cincinnati for two years and that city has two schools (Colerain and St. Xavier) that are perennial residents in the national high school top 10. I'm pretty sure they are well outside of AO's definition of amateur. I'm pretty sure both Colerain and St. X had games on the ESPN family of networks this fall.

I laugh at the rings too, but super bowl rings get the same laugh.  Give me a heisman-type trophy to put on the shelf, not a gigantic ring that looks pretty.

As for Wayzata, it should be a tougher road to the state title this year.  The Trojan D and the receivers aren't quite up to the caliber of years' past, but the run game is looking solid.  We should know more after they travel down to a neutral site in Dubuque to take on Carmel Catholic from the Chicago area who is ranked 8th in Illinois.  Andre McDonald and Hopkins might have their best shot in years to take down the Trojans.  --also, 105, you can probably spot my "professional" cousin next saturday at the Bank.  It's a 6pm kickoff and should be another good game in the series.

Thanks.  Didn't seem to work, though.

We have named the little guy Ollie Michael Bielat.  Mom is doing well.  Ollie is jaundiced, but the bilirubin lights are helping.  Thanks for all the well wishes.  Maybe I can get him to listen to his first Johnnie win today!

Is Ollie the anglicized form of Ole?

Unusual name (in places I've lived anyway) but I like it.  Family name?  Looked it up at http://www.babynamer.com/ollie and came up with the following (for which I do not vouch):

Meaning: Its source is Olivier, a French name meaning "Olive tree."

Origin: "Olivier."

Nickname For: Oliver

Narrative: The prototype of this name was one of Charlemagne's knights, celebrated in the 12th-century poem Chanson de Roland.

The French source suggests the name ultimately evolved from the Latin term olivarius. However, the companions-in-arms of the original French knight in the Chanson all sported names of clearly Germanic derivation. Keeping that in mind, other possible sources include the Old German name Alfihar (host of elves) and the Old Norse name Olafr (ancestor).

No family significance.  We just liked it.  Thought about going with Oliver and calling him Ollie, but I am not really a fan of the name Oliver, so we figured we would just go with Ollie.

Dave Lee really, really sucks as an announcer.  So glad he's off the Gophers broadcast.

There is still a lot to improve upon in the SJU huddle. Don't let this win fool you.
I'm still nervous about the future of this year's version of the Johnnies.

By the way, I don't think I have offered the proper congratulations to the entrance of Baby Ollie. Good Work, Duffman.

I like it big time! Plus, the name "Bob" is still available for Duffboy #2!   ;)

Edit: Duff, go to target and buy a "diaper genie." You will thank me later and the house will smell soooo much better.

Couldn't agree more. Sing song delivery which is fine for a morning show, I guess, but not play by play.
