I picture Bench as Rudy's friend Jim, who only played football because he was a legacy and was under the delusion that someday he would get to run out of the tunnel.
Jim was so low on the totem pole he didn't get to dress for home games. I'd say my role was more like that of Vince Vaughn's in that movie, although my being on the 3rd team/scout team had less to do with a lack of heart and more to do with George Wemeier having no clue who I was.
Too bad the Tommies didn't have you on the sidelines against Hamline.  They'd have beaten the spread with you throwing halfback passes in the fourth quarter.

While JOE Mauer has yet to enroll at UST, his older brother did and was a nice addition to a national champion baseball team. Joe is still eligible in football and could be wearing purple & grey one of these falls...once Caruso works out a suitable salary for Joe, of course.  ;D

His bilateral leg weakness would prevent him from practicing, but I'm sure he'd still be really effective on gameday, jus like for the Twins this year...oh, wait... :o

In 2002, we were throttling Coe in the second round of the playoffs on a freezing day in late November (the windchill was below 0 at kickoff).  Now, out of principle, I never wore long sleeves because I was a tough d-lineman and got plenty warm while playing.  But due to the lopsided score, we got pulled out of the game fairly early.  Needless to say, I was a bit chilly.  We convinced my friend's girlfriend to go and buy us hot chocolate at the concession stand  ;D

That was a pretty cold day, admittedly.

Oh, I got my opportunities against Hamline, Mac, Carleton, Augsburg...but the only time I touched the ball was if I was downing a punt. And even then the announcer would say, "Paul Sommerstadt downs the punt for the Tommies," which is forgiveable because we had the same number, although he has about 5 inches on me.

I do have a pretty sweet JV highlight tape though.

I was referring to the most recent matchup with Hambone where the Tommies turned off the offense after the half.  Does St. John's have a JV?  Even with JV games, it's baffling how you can keep 100 guys coming to practice who don't travel to away games.

That is surprising. What is the payoff there? Is there at least a scrimmage on Sunday/Monday for them?

No JV at SJU.  Unless they have changed things, they get some "scout-on-scout" time at practice so that the scout teams get a chance to run the SJU offense and defense instead of just opponent plays.  Otherwise, no live scrimmages or anything like that.

I'll admit to being quite discouraged my first year, but practices are actually pretty fun, and you're treated well by the older guys.  Being part of the team--the comraderie--keeps a lot of guys around.

A tradition unrivaled...

Regarding my post earlier today about UST going to D-II, I add these notes.

In response to the issue raised by Pat, I acknowledge that I made a mistake by not looking back into the history of this topic on the previous pages of the board.

Just to be clear, I heard the comments, twice before the UST-BU game and again after the game. The pre-game remarks were made by people wearing purple, so I assumed they were St Thomas fans. The other folks were unidentifiable as to school.

I'm sure I qualify as a rube; just not as an SJU rube, let's be clear about that.

My intent in bringing the issue to the board was less about claiming insight and more about finding out if anyone else had heard the story and if it had any validity. Clearly, the rumors belong in the dead letter box.

Don't beat yourself up, ed.  The U$Td supporters are just a bit exhausted from their last rant about the Modern Wonder on Summit and need a chance to catch their collective breaths.

Don't worry.  I understand UST is getting courted to join the Big East - to replace Pitt, Syr, WVU or one of those teams.  Anyway, you heard it here first. 8-)

When Mauer returns to form next season will you cheer for him or bash him?  When Mauer came back and played after Bi Leg Weakness he was hitting around .375 and then he decided the Twins were not going to the playoffs he might as well rest his sore neck!  The Twins need to get some new doctors/trainers in there.  The players had around 28 trips to the DL and players missed countless games with hangnails and a sore throat.

I remember when Pujols broke his wrist and was to be out around 2 months.  I believe it was 4 or 5 weeks he was out and he can still dominate the game!

"Dear John" letter...

I scanned around to see if any chat had erupted regarding St. Cloud Time's Dave Deland's column following the Johnnies loss to Bethel.  Not a word on this board but a flurry of comments from readers have shown up including The D3 Guru.

Personally I didn't think there was much conversation regarding an ousting of SJU's head man but according to Deland it's all the rage.

Either The Times or Dave don't know how to tag their columns or it was purposely buried... almost impossible to find however here's the link for easy reading... http://www.sctimes.com/article/20111009/SPORTS/110090015/DeLand-column-s-just-too-soon-Dear-John-

Developing.....

I've been away for a little bit, and it seems I need to catch up a lot a bit.
This story caught my eye. I think it ought to be placed in the "don't burn any bridges" file.
In my humble opinion, Dave DeLand had no other choice than to stick up for John.
I'm pretty sure his seat in the press box at Clemens Stadium would be quickly revoked if he joined the growing undercurrent that is suggesting John's tenure should come to a graceful end.
Dave isn't a Gagliardi lackey. He's just a guy that knows which side his bread is buttered on, and prefers to keep a good relationship between the SC Times and the coaching staff.

I've also noticed there is this new Mr. MIAC fella that seems to have created quite a stir on the boards. What's that all about?

First, I'm primarily a Twins fan, not above all else a Mauer fan.

That said, I am a Mauer fan. My desire for a little more accountability for Joe actually comes from being a fan. The reports leaking out of Twindom is that he really didn't do much of any rehab in the offseason. I'd love to see him come back strong next season. But I think good coaches and fans hold players and teams accountable. My opinion that Joe needs a little less coddling and a little more kick in the pants isn't a lack of support. It's the opposite. I want to seem him succeed and go down as the greatest Twin and catcher in baseball history.
