Happy Thanksgivings everyone

May our teams continue to win if they are still playing this year, if not let them have an outstanding next year

Robert Zimmerman

Happy Thanksgiving!  My in-laws brought over a 1.4 gallon mini-keg of Bell's Oberon for our feast, one of my favorites!

The one thing that might keep Caruso from going for the USD job is the fact that the Dakota Dome is the worst facility in FCS and Vermellion is an absolutely god-awful town. Yet, being on the border of Nebraska, Iowa and SD opens a ton of recruiting possibilities. Who knows?

As someone who grew up in NW Iowa, I can attest to the dumpiness of Vermillion. It makes Sewer City (Sioux City for the uninitiated) seem like LA.

And as for recruiting. USD showed some interest when I was getting recruited, but it took me about two seconds to remember where they played and what they played in... :o Let's just say the asthetics aren't quite what they are on Summit Ave.  8-)

::) I wasn't saying anything about what's best for Caruso. Just stating the general opinion of people from that part of country (like myself) when it comes to Vermillion.

Can I just say, the ongoing Johnnie obsession with Caruso finding a new job is now bordering on pathetic (and I realize not all of you are participating). Maybe he does take a new job, maybe he doesn't. None of these journalists and sports media talking heads or Johnnies-with-their-ears-to-the-ground-around-Summit really have any idea. You know who does...Glenn Caruso. And I'm guessing he's a wee bit more concerned with Monmouth this week. Kinda like Bethel and SJU and the rest of the MIAC should be more concerned with recruiting than when Caruso uses the bathroom and if he was reading a South Dakota newspaper at the time. 8-)

Hazz,
A short list of subjects that are talked about nonstop on this board: Australian Rules football; beer; jokes of varying quality; more beer; Ray Grant; fishing; ice fishing; tailgating.

Talking about the future of the coach of the dominant team in the conference does not seem like that outlandish of an "obsession" when you consider what other obsessions dominate the board. The fact it's Johnnies fans primarily talking about it, well, they're the ones who are primarily talking about all those things above as well. And we're talking about a coach who took a moribund program and turned it into the best in the conference and one of the top three or four teams in the country in a matter of four years. He's young, dynamic, charismatic and has moved around a bit in his still-young coaching career. Again, I don't see how it's an obsession to wonder if that guy might be drawing interest from other schools.

I can only speak for myself, but my obsession with it is about 95 percent joking and 5 percent serious. No matter what I say, I really don't have much power with the Columbia administration or the committee that will pick the next coach. And many people online are speculating about Caruso to USD, for about 5 obvious reasons, none of which have anything to do with jealousy about the Tommies' success this season.

I think Johnnie fans would be the first to say - and actually, on this board, have been the first, second and third ones to say - that SJU needs to up its game, on the field and in the recruiting game, if it wants to get back to the top. Johnnie fans have said much harsher things about SJU than any Tommie fans and readily acknowledge that the power has shifted to St. Thomas and Bethel and that even if Caruso would leave, things would have to pick up in Collegeville. That said, there's not much point in lecturing us about concentrating on recruiting. As far as I know, John and Fasching are not posting here about Caruso's future. They're the ones that have to worry about recruiting, not us. In the same way if Tommie fans want to look ahead to a matchup against Whitewater, they're free to do so. They don't actually control what happens on the field. Nor are our obsessions with Caruso taking time away from recruiting future Johnnie stars or scrubs.

Maybe part of the Caruso posts are a way to poke a stick at the Tommies. What else are we supposed to use? We've already used up the attendance argument and if we start getting into other things, next thing you know they're talking about how hot their girls are compared to Bennies. So we'll engage in some innocent speculation about Caruso. I think Tommies can handle it and will take the tradeoff of having a guy who's led them to two straight unbeaten regular seasons and has them in position for a run at the national title.

But because he has done those things, and because he is young and has moved around a bit, the price you pay is having outsiders or jealous fan bases speculate about his next steps. It's the way the sports world works, whether you're talking about Pitino, Calipari, Saban, Brad Stevens or Roy Williams going back home to North Carolina.

Now, I'm going to leave my Caruso obsession (just for the moment, mind you; I already have a 750-word post prepared about why he'd be the perfect candidate to replace Tony Sparano) and return to my other one: Watching tapes of Lakers games from the 1980s. Most importantly, Happy Thanksgiving to all.

It's really what encompasses me as a Johnnie fan, my obssessiveness.

My concern about Caruso leaving is the amount of D2/D1 guys on his coaching staff. But I think a system has been implemented where the keys to the program could be turned over to Blane Tetreault and UST can still remain successful. Additionally, Tetreault is a UST guy, so I'd feel comfortable with him at the helm. I just hope in this hypothetical scenario Fritz recognizes as much and promotes from within.

Whatever Caruso decides, UST owes him a lot, and I know I'll be grateful. That said, can't wait for the Monmouth game and Vermillion is an unclean toilet bowel in a partially abandoned rest area used primarily by vagrants and hitchhikers.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I realize I spelled "bowl" wrong. But, in retrospect, I think I am fine with the misspelling.

Well if its a choice between attendance figures and Caruso's coaching future, I'd rather hear about the latter  ;)

Bench, I think you are over reacting. Besides, the obvious replacement for Caruso would be Brooks Bollinger.
You see, this scenario would fit well into the story line of the upcoming theatrical blockbuster "Six Degrees of Separation of UST Bench" starring Kevin Bacon as UST Bench.  ;)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Good luck to the Toms and Scots today...

I anticipate a close match-up between UST & MC with the Toms following their well-scripted, balanced and relentless offensive attack to victory.  The Scots can make it interesting and certainly have enough playoff experience not to be intimidated.

Inquiring, obsessive MIAC minds would like to know what's been the Scots travel itinerary, how has your stay been and did you make it to Plums for appetizers?

Also, will The One Armed Scott be in attendance (.....at least adding one to the final count)?

Developoing....
