Things I've learned from this board:

1. SJU has the best attendance in the country, which means the Tommies Suck
2. UST is on the verge of replacing Boston College in the ACC
3. People east of Ohio are very sensitive about their football and get offended when us Minnesotans talk a little harmless smack  ;D
4. If you haven't been blown out by Mount Union or Whitewater multiple times, you're nobody
5. Glen Caruso will be the next coach of Minnesota Columbia South Dakota Illinois representative for Minnesota's 4th Congressional District.

Updated, though I wasn't sure if he was more likely to be elected in St. Paul's or St. Cloud's district.

I see Caruso as a man that would run in the 3rd district. Minnetonka, Edina, Eden Prairie--you know, where all the cake eaters are. ;)

SJFF82, I don't know much about  the Ithaca/Fischer rivalry.  But I do know there are some big differences with the St. John's/St. Thomas rivalry.

In the beginning, St. Thomas was the big guy on the block.  Until 1958 St. Thomas was very dominate.  From 1958 through 2011 the record is 42-12 in favor of St. John's.  After losing to St. John's from 1998 to 2009, St. Thomas has won the past two games.  This year by an embarrassing margin.  Potentially the start of a trend, but certainly not yet a trend.  Over the past 10 years Bethel has had much more success than St. Thomas.

St. John's and St. Thomas are both private, Roman Catholic universities.  They have more things in common than many care to admit.  Both formerly all male schools.

Note:  St. John's "sister school" is the College of St. Benedict, a mere 5 miles from Collegeville.  It is more like one school with two campuses where the boys and girls are supposed to go home and nite and  in their own beds.  This has been gradual.

The two student bodies (I'm lumping SJU and CSB together) have very similar demographics, in almost any category you want to examine.  There are kids who opt for St. Thomas because they want to be in the "big city" and kids who opt for CSB/SJU because they don't.  There are those who love the outdoors who elect CSB/SJU.  Both schools turn out lots of accountants, MDs, lawyers, school teachers*.  The cost to attend is very close.

Prior to St. Thomas going co-ed in 1979 or thereabouts, and going on a growth spurt that has only recently begun to flatten out, the two schools were very, very similar.  Hence, I believe, the deep seated rivalry.  It's almost like sibling rivalries.

*St. John's has turned out 2 US Senators and 3 Congressmen.  As far as I know, St. Thomas is at zero one Congressman.  Both our former US Senators, in the spirit of the Benedictine tradition of serving their fellow man, have been employed by St. Thomas.

An excellent post; really interesting background. +k

While I don't have a dog in this SJF-UST catfight, I do have an important question: what the hell is a "cow cup"?

During the 2009/2010 UST vs SJU games in,Collegville, the Rent-A-Cops got a little bent out of shape over our "Red Cup Gatherings" looking like a frat party, so a number of us began to use insulated mugs or anything that didn't look like a red Solo cup. SagatagSam began using a plastic cup that had a cartoon,Holstein, black & white spotted cow on it. This "cow cup" was the prized possession of the young Johnnie from Royalton,MN. As a gesture of goodwill he let the scoundrel from Grand Forks and Tommie grad, USTBench, use his prized cow cup to sip Hamm's from. Now SagatagSam is on a mission to find a replacement for the lost cow cup.I hope this clears up any confusion over the back story of the cow cup.  ;D

218Tommie

So much has gone on since I was done with school and went to the tap to....ahh....hydrate with a fellow Tommie supporter, but somehow Sagatag and I are in the same boat. I too, lost a dear possession up in Collegeville last year, my prized purple UST hat while storming the field. Believe it or not, people from the range and Royalton have one or two things in common.

Any idea if they take playoff figures?  I looked at the end of the regular season and the Tommies was averaging a whopping 4500 a game in attendance. :o  Even though it was completley scewed because of the Tommie/Johnnie game, i was actually somewhat impressed.  They finished the regular seasson at 6th in the country, now I think the 15th or something.

I've been told (by a Tommie Alum) that John Sanford,  (not his real name) is also a Tommie. He writes a series of books (Certain Prey, Mortal Prey, etc) one of which was just turned into a made for TV movie starring Mark Harmon as Lucas Davenport, a Police Bigwig, from Minneapolis. Very good reads.
