I assume Hamline will get the win against itself in a scrimmage.  So maybe I should have went (0-8) (1/2 - 9 1/2)

To me, rigging the system would put both teams on the same side of the bracket.

That's how I interpreted it.

Ah, good point.  Well, they haven't done that, thank God.  ;)

Just got done listening to Coach Lance Leipold on the Tim Brando Show, and he did a fabulous job!  Didn't know this, but Coach Leipold was the first coach to send a team helmet to Brando to be displayed in his radio studio, which has now become a regular bit on the show ("Who sent in the helmet?").  Good for him, and go Warhawks!

It's the end of the year and all the MIAC teams are out, so here it comes (via some guy who has done a pretty good, if unofficial, job of this):

Top Ten AFL Goals of 2011

Top Ten AFL Marks of 2011

(Some really spectacular marks this year)

There's some pretty good arguments in there for getting rid of pass interference in American football.

I'm sure Army or Navy (or Georgia Tech for that matter) would not complain about getting rid of the pass.
Stats from 2011 Army-Navy Game
Total combined rushing yards: 594
Total combined passing yards: 90

...way, way early preseason power rankings and predictions for MIAC 2012...

1. Bethel (7-1) (9-1) (loss to SJU)
2. UST (7-1) (9-1) (loss to Bethel)
3. SJU (6-2) (8-2) (loss to Concordia; UST)
4. Concordia (5-3) (7-3)
5. St. Olaf (4-4) (5-5)
6. Carleton (3-5) (5-5)
7. Gustavus (3-5) (4-6)
8. Augsburg (1-7) (3-7)
9. Hamline (0-8) (1-9)

Interesting pick with SJU losing to Concordia. I know CC is bringing back 9 starters on defense, but they've got to replace QB Michael Dunham (a second team All-MIAC selection) and All-MIAC honorable mention RB Chris Gilson.

I believe Gilson has a chance at a 5th year, as he missed the 2010 season with a broken arm.

I made that pick assuming he'd be back.  I also think that if the league actually ended up that way the MIAC would get 2 into the tournament.  Here's hoping.

And now that our cohesive MIAC bandwagon playoff run is over, I'd just like to mention for all the Johnnies playing along at home that UST is #1 in men's basketball and hockey.

I'm sure Mr. MIAC will be able to tell you why. ::)

Exactly. This discussion is raging all over the boards. If you "rig/adjust" the system to penalize the powerful, you tarnish the title.

If and when some team besides one of the purple powers reaches the pinnacle, it just won't be as high. Why hollow out the Walnut and Bronze?

thus marks a new low for the Johnnie athletic program.   :o Is the curling team at St. John's also having a good year?

---more seriously, the johnnies have the shooters this year to surprise some teams on any given night, maybe even the Tommies who haven't been beaten by SJU for 5 years.

You got me there - unlike SJU's bastkeball and hockey teams that just seem non-existent, UST wrestling simply doesn't exist... too busy wrestling with co-eds I suppose.

I'm not sure prognostication on the Cobbers should hinge upon Gilson's return. While a valuable runner, he wasn't seeing all the playing time until Trent Johnson (sophomore) got hurt vs. Gustavus fairly early in the season. Losing Dunham will be a knock, as he really had a handle on the offense. However, he was capably substituted for at times throughout the season, so we'll see.

I do agree there will be a strongly divided upper and lower tier in the MIAC, even more so than what was seen this year.

In terms of endurance, skill, and toughness, wrestling is at the top.  If you don't understand or appreciate that, that's your problem, but wrestling is far from irrelevant.
