Actually, the NHL is trying to discourage fights. They've instituted the Instigator rule, and other small regulations to that end. Unfortunately, I think the players feel that it is sometimes necesary since the officials miss far too much, and some players take advantage of that fact.

Love and played the game ... and folks have to remember that up through college and Olympics fighting is not part of the game (Gino Gasperini's old Fighting Sue notwithstanding ...or "St. Gino" as he is likely known to you, Bench.)

Another problem: TV hasn't figured out how to cover it, although a big screen and HD helps.

Haven't seen Aussie Rules in person, but for me there's no better sport to watch than an NHL playoff game: Up and down, fistic outbreaks are too risky and one shot can make the difference.

The pros won't change much. Even if they try to legislate it out of the big leagues, fighting is what keeps a lot of minor league arenas full (and beer sales flowing) in areas that are traditional  puck towns. I know at one point a few years ago, the state with the most pro hockey franchises was Texas.

That and the first round of march madness.

Despise Hockey? What too many different skills displayed? Too fast? Too physical? It is, by far, the best in person spectator sport in the world.

Do away with the promotion of fights.  It adds nothing to the game.  It's just trashy.  If a player in any other sport started swinging punches, he/she would be kicked out of the game, yet it seems to be encouraged in hockey, even though it has nothing to do with the objective of the game.  I just think it's stupid.  If the players want to fight rather than play hockey, maybe they should look into boxing or MMA, where fighting is the objective.

For every person like you that wants to discourage fighting (and I agree with you and think you are right that they should be tossed for it), there are 10 people that go to hockey games in the hopes that just one fight will break out.
And, in a free market economy, a vendor will choose the 10 people that demand the morally corrupt product over the one person that demands a little discipline and respect for the game.
Look no further than artists like Ke$ha for proof of this (or the Onion News story on "Booty Wave" by K'ronikka)

As long as we don't see any trash like this roaming out on the field at The Bank next year I think I'll be ok:

That should be on an episode of "What Not To Wear"

Hey, Hey, Hey, even though it was a little overboard, they were trying to represent something bigger than the company that sponsored them by wearing uniforms that mirrored the state flag. I am from the great four season state of Maryland and the attempt to represent the state flag was great. However, they could at leas change the helmet, that's what threw me off.

I have to agree that hockey is the best in person sport to watch. I too grew up playing the sport, but I kinda like watching the fights. There is a lot that the refs miss. But, I was also a grinder not a finesse player. The only St. Gino in my mind played at the U, never heard of that guy from north of the Rainy River.

Here is one of the best college hockey fights ever.

RE: Gino Gasparini/Old time hockey/Water bottle incident

Six degrees of Bench time. (In North Dakota you pretty much know everyone, so give me the Mark Rosen "ding" for the name drops if you must)

Anyway, Gino's a nice "regular" guy considering all he's accomplished, who is immensely enjoying semi-retirement. He actually had a job where all he did was go from location to location adding his two-cents on what should be done to improve certain hockey arenas. I played high school football with his son Joey and his wife "Tootsie" was my 10th grade health teacher.

As far as fighting was concerned, I don't think Gino was a huge fan of it, but the WCHA in the early 80s was a very different place, and fighting was not unique to UND. Sure, we had Cary Eades' infamous "water bottle incident," but what the hell was he supposed to do? Guy squirted him with water. The best part is when he wrestles away from the cop and comes running back up the tunnel. Funniest part is, he looks like my dad now, and you can see him occassionally cutting a rug at Big Daddy's.

All I can say is there's not too many towns in the United States where you can hit some random dive bar in the summer time and all of the sudden there's just a half dozen people getting drunk with the Stanley Cup like its normal.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Hockey was pretty much foreign to rural central MN until the NHL came to Minnesota. I must have been 11 or so when my younger brother and I were watching a North Stars game on TV.  We didn't understand the game, so naturally we turned to our father for explanation. Dad (not knowing a thing about the game) peered over the edge of the St Cloud Daily Times, looked at the TV and said "oh that's hockey. It's like basketball except they skate instead of dribble" and quickly pulled his paper back up. We thought this new game was super cool. Fast forward a couple days and my brother was playing on his grade school basketball team and promptly sucker-punched an opponent who stole the ball from him. He explained to the ref (coincidently our Dad) "I was only doing like the North Starts guys did on TV!"

Dad never liked hockey. I've come to love the game.
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Anyone know this guy?

Judging by the sweatshirt I'd say he definitely matriculated in Collegeville, and not NYC.

What does the MIAC look like next season. I heard UST is losing a lot. Will they still be favorites against next year?
