A story for any of you that haven't got your fill of Bennie bashing this week/month/year. Feel free to make jokes about the CSB dining hall making the front page of the St. Cloud Times website.
CSB gets rid of dining trays to cut waste

They tried to do this at Carleton my senior year and started doing Trayless Tuesday.  It didn't go over very well with the people that had to carry more than one plate of food at a time (i.e. the football team), but most of us were smart enough to just take an extra tray on Monday.

My favorite line from the article:
QuoteMost said they've heard a few complaints from other students, particularly large football players used to filling up a tray.

A tradition unrivaled...

CSB-SJU students have several options where they can spend their meal dollars.
If this turns out to be incredibly unpopular, more students will elect to go to the Refectory for meals and the CSB dining hall will lose out on that business.

It could be a good policy--who knows. Personally, I wouldn't have cared it they got rid of trays, but then again, I didn't care about making multiple trips to the serving line, drink station or desert area.

Next, they should try to force students to eat with their hands on days where they serve pizza, wings, sandwiches, etc. that way they won't have to wash 12,000 utensils per day! ;)

Why stop there?  Just dump the food in a trough and hose it out afterwards.

If this isn't a softball toss of an assist for those looking to hit a Bennie joke out of the park, I don't know what is...

That wasn't the intention, but I'm okay with how it turned out.  :)

How about charging for each meal rather than including the costs in the total bill?  That which is free has no value, hence the waste.  Makes the students pay the ten bucks it costs to put the food on their tray each meal time and see what happens.

I attended SJU after serving a few years in the Navy.  There was one teacher, I can't remember the class at the moment, that was always away for a conference or another so classes were frequently cancelled.  I worked out I was paying $180 per class (or so) and I wrote a letter to the administration requesting a refund for every class that was missed by the instructor. I didn't get my cash, but I did notice better teacher attendance.

There would be a smaller number of students that would gain "the freshman 15" pounds.

Check out johnniefootball.com.  SJU bid for and won the training sight responsibilities for the state all-star game.  Minnesota's best players will be on the campus having a look around.  Good for the Johnnies.

Great deal at http://steals.startribune.com/ on Vine Park Brewery Growlers (you have about 2 days left to make a purchase).
5 Growler fills and includes price of bottle for $30...that save you about $35.

If you don't know...Vine Park is located on W. 7th St. in Saint Paul (http://www.vinepark.com/)

I saw that also. Let's hope the Johnnies can leverage that better than Gustavus did for the past 13 years.

Nice exposure, but that doesn't really help in recruiting.  They're all seniors, and at that point, they have made their college choices.

Yes and no....could possibly help pull in some the D1 FCS and DII types that change their mind after their first year at a bigger school and are looking to transfer.

The failure of GAC to leverage any value does not mean the event is absent of value. I figure that if UST had picked up this opportunity then we would be lamenting the outmaneuver. So I reckon it's good. I also figure players will talk about the experience with their younger friends and it may crack open a door or two.

Anyway. Back in Melbourne and on the train to work. Sigh.
