The AFL winter training is in full swing and the pre-season competition starts in just a week and a half.  I was reading an article on a second year Hawthorn player and a sentence made me laugh out loud.  The footy reporters here have more passion for the game than for their marriages, I suspect.

The dashing utility's pace and devastating run-and-carry game is looming as another potent weapon in Hawthorn's bid for premiership redemption.

Dashing, devastating, looming, potent weapon, premiership redemption.  I don't think that sentence could be any more dramatic.

I had to laugh when I read this quote from Oklahoma State wrestling coach, John Smith, about the suspension of his 12th-ranked 141 pounder, Josh Kindig.   ;D

Quote"His ass isn't going to be wrestling for us," Oklahoma State head coach John Smith said Saturday on Oklahoma State's wrestling radio broadcast hosted by Rex Holt and Roger Moore. "I'm so angry at him right now. I don't know if he'll wrestle the rest of the season. I may cool down, but just some knucklehead decisions, self-centered decisions that he's made. Either he's going to grow up or he's not going to compete for us."

One of my all-time favorite newspaper stories, from a small weekly in southwestern Minnesota, about a B squad football game. The game ended on a team intercepting a pass during a tie game and returning it 100 yards on the final play. Dramatic stuff.

But it included a line "The quarterback looked for a receive. But that receive was actually an interceptor."

And then ended with "It was undoubtedly the most amazing, unbelievable finish in the history of B squad football in the world."

Indeed.

And that's the kind of coach I would want my little Duffster (if I had a Duffster) to wrestle for.  Call it like it is and expect grown men to act like men.  Damn straight.

Hilariously epic.  If newspaper articles were like movies, that closing line would be like the D-Day scenes in Saving Private Ryan.

Hampden-Sydney sucks only slightly less than St Thomas.  A grudging congratulations to them on breaking SJU's 10-year stranglehold on DIII attendance.

Amen to that!  Althought I'd prefer the U of MN over Okie State :)

I'd be willing to bet that J Robinson would take the same position.  Hopefully he'll still be coach when little Duffster hits college age.

He'd be a damn-old wrestling coach by then!  Hopefully, the little guy takes to wrestling.

I don't want to name names but yes, The Fulda Free Press. My parents' hometown paper. I shouldn't be so harsh, was probably a kid who wrote it. By the way, when I was home I read the Free Press and it's still the old newspaper width, which most of them changed from to save money. It's so weird holding one of those old-school wide newspapers. But felt good.

Speaking of wrestling coaches, Duff you'll love this story but really everyone would. In this week's SI, on this high school coach in Chicago. An amazing story. Long, but worth the read.

Wow, sfury, that is quite the story.  So sad, yet so inspirational.

QuoteAt times, two of his wrestlers, identical twins Chris and Nick Dardanes, had to carry him down the long hallways between gyms.

Chris and Nick Dardanes are sophomores at the U of MN.  They are extremely hard-nosed, aggressive wrestlers.  Chris is ranked #7 at 133 and Nick #8 at 141.  After reading that, I can see where their drive and style came from!

Duffman, hopefully I can write an article on the little Duffster someday for The Guillotine. It would be an honor! ;)

One week away from the International Eelpout Festival in Walker and the companion event at the Shamrock Lodge on Kego Lake in Longville! The Eel Pout Fishing Show will be Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Coors Light Keg Castle in the city park in Walker. Mark Rosen from WCCO and Mike Mussman from K102 will be present. Then at 4 p.m. Saturday there will be the Bikini Ice Fishing Team fashion show at the same location. More information on this wonderful weekend can be found at www.eelpoutfestival.com.

JR,
Are you going to Bock Fest this year?  We are not because the little one's baptism is the day after.

Duff, I will not be making it to New Ulm next Saturday since I will be up north in Longville and Walker for the Eelpout festivities!
