Duff, I will not be making it to New Ulm next Saturday since I will be up north in Longville and Walker for the Eelpout festivities!

Oops.  I didn't look at the dates for the Eelpout Fest.  Have fun!

No.  It'd be interesting to go, though.

I don't want to name names but yes, The Fulda Free Press. My parents' hometown paper. I shouldn't be so harsh, was probably a kid who wrote it. By the way, when I was home I read the Free Press and it's still the old newspaper width, which most of them changed from to save money. It's so weird holding one of those old-school wide newspapers. But felt good.

Speaking of wrestling coaches, Duff you'll love this story but really everyone would. In this week's SI, on this high school coach in Chicago. An amazing story. Long, but worth the read.

Thanks for sharing Mike's story, sfury. He is an inspiration to many. Ironically, Mike spent many evenings out carousing around Tiffs and other UST joints. I have come to know Mike through two buddies from UST who grew up with him. One of them was actually visiting him at IU when the little incident with the frat boys broke out. The story is legendary. In any event, he is a good man and could use all of our prayers.

Read this last night.  What a story.  Very powerful.  Highly recommended reading.  While the subject of the article is a wrestling coach, it is really about life.

I am reading Vince Flynn's new Rapp book and, although he is a U$T grad, I like his work. But, about half way or two-thirds into the book, he names one of his throw away characters-just uses the name in reference to someone who will accompany a CIA official-and the name he uses is "Waldvogel." Ugh! More references like that and he will be off my list.  :)

Light Installation at Clemens Stadium to Begin This Week

Now they're going to try to skimp on the installation?  Sounds like a great idea  ???

I've never been totally on board with the lights.
I'm still wondering why they are deciding this NOW. Shouldn't this have been evaluated and decided on last year, regardless of how wet the ground was, when they rolled out the plan for the project?

And save even more by digging no feet and installing no lights...

(secret agent Waldvogel could dig four foot holes for half price.)

so they're putting the light poles in front of the bleachers? on the inside or outside of the track?  sounds to me like they're obstructing every seat on the sidelines. Can you think of any other college football fields considered to be worthwhile to visit that have that sort of setup?

Rat,
You'll be interested to know that the writer of the piece, the wonderful Chris Ballard, is going to appear in a future edition of the world-famous Fury Files, joining the likes of Tom Linnemann and Pat Coleman. He's been one of my favorite writers for a while because of his great basketball writing, but as this story shows, he excels with everything.

GAHHH!!!  I've been eagerly anticipating two events and just realized... NOooooo....

Hawthorn open the pre-season footy against North Melbourne on Friday night.

And I'll be listening Il Divo across the river at the Myer Music Bowl.

Dare I tempt the wrath of Mrs Oz and bring the iPhone to check scores?  I'd sooner front up to the alumni association and make the case for view impeding light poles and night football.

Greetings - first time poster, long time visitor.  Not a Johnnie, married to a Bennie, who grew up in St. Joe attending Johnnie games with her Dad.  We have season football tickets, drive up from Madison Wisconsin (we have her family cabin in Stearns County) to see most home games.

Those of you who are interested in the Mike Powell story would enjoy this video that was on Chicago's WGN TV sports one night recently.
