Ah, all good things come to an end - it seems #13's two year reign at the top of the GoJohnnies football page finally came to an end. :'(  http://www.gojohnnies.com/index.aspx?tab=football&path=football

It was good while it lasted.  Bennie hearts are breaking all across the USA at this very moment.

I just read a quick story about Johnnie golf over at gojohnnies.com and saw this picture at the lead:

Now that's a nice bag.  I wish I had me one of those.

Hazzben, to whom are you referring when you say there is optimism surrounding Bethel's new QB?  I didn't see anyone behind Aakre last year that inspired me.

As far as the D goes, despite the huge loss of B Morgan, I expect the front seven to be strong.  However, the returning DBs will really need to elevate their game(s).  Perhaps a stronger pass rush, which I anticipate, will help.

QB: Erik Peterson (So) out of Orono - I don't think anyone expects him to run like Aakre or Wetzell, but there's hope he'll be an efficient passer and athletic enough when he pulls it down. The last two guys we've had at QB have been physical freaks for the position when they ran. I'm not expecting that. But if we can get consistent passing from him he doesn't need to be.

He saw very limited action last year as a freshman. No surprise there, given his age and Aakre being a 4 yr starter. Like I said, he'll need the D and Oline/run game to play well early so he can get experience and confidence. And you never know how a guy will respond to being 'the guy' on game days. We'll see.

Morgan's a big loss, just a great player and leader. But we've graduated a lot of talented linebackers over the past years and seem to reload each time. Seth Mathis is just an absolute beast at the other ILB spot. He had a breakout year as a sophomore last year. I think he dominates the league this year.

We're stacked at safety and I think there's a good mix of talent at CB that will emerge.

This defense should be very good. Obviously guys need to stay healthy and young guys step up for graduates, but the pieces are there.

My favorite part of the early season games is watching guys emerge. Some guys you are excited to finally see start, others just come out of nowhere. Should be an exciting year in the MIAC.

Old news, but better late than never.

Bethel hired a new Head Coach in Track and Field. A very average athlete, but I guess he's supposed to be a pretty good coach  ;)

Gotta say, I love his DIII connections, and after all his success, staying close to his roots!

Agree the Bethel has a chance to be outstanding.  L Buttenhoff started to establish himself as last season unfolded.  I expect big things from him this year.  S Mathis is indeed a beast, and will make some highlight reel plays.  With E Smith and B Skoog outside, I wonder how many snaps there will be for P Jacobson.  With his speed (fast) and size (light), he seems well suited to move to a safety spot, but I'm not a coach so that likely won't happen.  Among the d-backs to emerge this fall, I liked what I saw from J Treimer in limited action last year.  Curious to see what the rookie from Anoka brings to the DB mix.

An Olympic gold medalist AND a DIII national champ?

I mean, usually a guy only has enough juice in the tank to pull one or the other off.

I realized the other day that UST plays at SJU on my son's first birthday this year...Johnnies can't lose.  :o

I think the Johnnies are poised for a bounce back year. What other MIAC team is going to have Enrique Iglesias rooting for them. Multiple time All-MIAC center Josh Dirlam made friends with Enrique last night and danced/performed onstage during his Target Center show.

Here's the description of the YouTube video: Enrique pulled shirtless Josh onstage and Josh proceeded to hug every band member and give props to the Eden Prairie Eagles and St John's Johnnies. Josh's buddy then joined him on stage. Josh tried and failed to sing "Do you think I'm Sexy?" but saved face with some nifty vocals and dance moves on "Stand By Me.". Suffice to say Enrique got more than he bargained for with The fearless Josh.

It would seem that there would be some advantage to playing UST early, because while they very well might have the talent to return to a similar level as last year, I would think it will take at least a couple of games for guys to emerge on offense to replace the Tracy / Tobin / Waldvogel three headed monster.  Those guys did an awful lot for the team.

There is a lot to watch this year in the MIAC: Seeing if UST can reload, if SJU can return to a place of power, what Bethel looks like without the running quarterback that they've had for the past 8 years, and whether or not st. olaf has the talent to make a run at the title.

And to dance shirtless?  What would that take?
