Some transfer news from the SC Times.

Vakulskas — a 5-foot-11, 187-pound wide receiver who redshirted at Augustana (S.D.) last season...

Vasquez — a 6-3, 272-pound offensive/defensive lineman who played at Los Angeles Harbor Community College

So that's good.  But there's this odd quote:

"I didn't finish two core classes in high school, so my plan was to go to junior college first and then look at St. John's after that," Vasquez said. "It worked out well. I was able to complete my freshman year with like a 3.4 or 3.6 GPA."

He didn't know his GPA?

And Rajkowski's snap of the new uniform:

Vasquez looks like a big kid...however IMO SJU has tried to get big on the line the last couple of years and really just managed to get slower.

New uniforms...not much of a picture...where's ROR when we need him?  Sounds like the white pants will no longer have a red stripe either. Trying to update the look to lure kids in?  We'll have to see how they look on the field.

Is that a KFC logo on the left lapel?

More likely Coborn's or maybe St. Cloud Orthopedics. ;-)

Remember Mr. Mom?

"Yeah, 220, 221. Whatever it takes."

I will say I've long wished SJU would look at the community college ranks more. I say that as a proud community colleger (is that a word? I don't know, I went to CC.) who transferred in my junior year. There are a lot of great players at the JUCO level, in all sports (Minnesota especially has some really good football teams each year, such as Rochester). And those schools have plenty of guys who are strong enough academically to transfer in, but financially couldn't pull off SJU for four years. One issue for those transfers could be adjusting to being an outsider in your junior year. I had some of that, since SJU is so big on building those bonds for students (we played games together at orientation!...or whatever), especially in the freshman year. But if it's a kid coming for football, it'll be easier to find a connection in a crowd of 200 -- and no problem at all if you can play.

That explains a lot.   :o

I will also never forgive the "transfer coordinator" back then who said I had to take calculus or trig before coming to SJU, as that's what all students there took. Really? So I did. And did not do well. Then I got to SJU and took "Theory of math," which involved writing papers about mathematicians. Thanks for telling me that course was available, sir.

I did at least get out of doing the aforementioned juvenile/pointless/humiliating/dumb bonding activities at the SJU orientation I did go to. Again, my transfer coordinator said I had to go, even though I was a junior. So it's me and dozens of snot-nosed soon-to-be freshmen. "Do I really have to play the trust game or leap frog or whatever it is you're making these kids do to form connections that will last a lifetime, or at least three weeks?"

"No, I suppose not."

Actually, I think SJU should start recruiting JUCO players exclusively  ;)

In all seriousness, I know there are plenty of great kids who start out at community colleges. And as college gets more expensive, this trend will probably only continue to grow. But the interactions I've had with the majority (though not all) of JUCO athletes has left a lot lacking. They just don't seem like a great DIII fit. They are either there because they still dream of a 'big time' football or because they had off-field issues that precluded them from going the normal route. There are obviously exceptions, but I think the difference between your average CC student and 'student'-athlete is significant. But there are certainly diamonds in the rough. Kilde being a great example for Bethel. But I think guys like that are far from the norm.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Around here, we have long-winded discussions about the addition of lights, video boards and turf to college football fields. Our compatriots in Texas must worry about such trivial matters when discussing the junior high football fields....as they do this (http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/08/07/everythings-bigger-in-texas-especially-this-60-million-high-school-football-stadium/?hpt=hp_t3) for a high school team! That press box looks to be as big as ALL the MIAC press boxes combined
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

$60 Million for a public high school directly approved and funded by a town makes a lot more sense to me than $500 Million from all corners of Minnesota without a vote for Zygi.

What are these guys from that high school going to think when they take a recruiting visit to Augsburg?

We had a guy from Lubbock, TX on the team by the name of Guy Bellair.  A real Bill Brasky, he was!

Happy Birthday, Guy Bellair!

Bill Brasky, uhmmm, I mean Guy Bellair is a son of a b!t%h, but one he!! of a dancer. He once danced (very seductively,I may add) with the entire U$TD incoming Freshmen class,2001 and went on to find a cure for the common cold based on his experience with those filthy Tommies of U$TD. Guy Bellair then went on to donate the cash award from the Nobel Prize for Medicine to his drinking buddies in Lubbock, TX-you won't find a better friend than Guy Bellair, unless of course you compare him to Bill Brasky, then there's no contest- it's Brasky hands down.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Can't wait for the start of the year.  Defense can only get better, especially D-Line, and hopefully the QB will do better.  Got to take down  STU.
