An off the beaten path suggestion.
Today the bride & myself stopped for lunch in Kimball (Intersection of Hwy 55 & Hwy 15) at the Triple R Grill & Bar.
This may be an alternative after SJU games for those heading back to the TC if you don't mind the detour off of 94.
A beer, a glass of wine some beef fajitas and an Oriental chicken salad for $28.00.

Also Of interest to the Johnnie faithful 1/2 price tap beer & rail drinks 3-6PM 7 days a week. This would put you in "happy hour" after a game for at least 1 1/2 hrs. I had an Alaskan Summer Ale on tap (non-happy hour was $3.50 for 16 oz).The food was very good.
was the wine from the local vineyard? I've heard the grapes grown in the shadows of Powder Ridge, which is maybe 1/2 mile north of Triple R, make a fairly decent wine.

you can head 5 miles east on 55 & eat at MOMS, a state troopers' favorite. Last time I stopped, I got a 1/3 lb cheeseburger, huge pile of tots and a soda for under $6.

also, while in Kimball, go to Knaus Meats on Main Street....as good a butcher/meat market as Schmidt's in Nicollet/New Ulm....4th or 5th generation. Top quality, awesome flavor and Cub-or-lower prices.

Duff- you'd feel right at home at the Triple R--- imagine a larger version of old Kay's with a bar area
(ok, now Im hungry and nostalgic for the olde stomping grounds)
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

We pass there on our way to our cabin often.  Is it a family atmosphere that I could stop at without feeling too guilty?

Heck yea. Remember this is Kimball. This place is everything to everybody in town. The hard core drinking happens at the Muni south by the railroad tracks.

Duff if you cam imagine this, multiple TVs on every wall, pool table in one corner. Family-type section in the other corner, there were several grandmas with their grandkids over there along with a table of octogenarians. The TVs had soap operas, national news & a cooking show (all on mute) and classic, I mean classic country honky-tonk on the jukebox- George Jones, Conway Twitty,Merle Haggard etc.... I know if you don't like this place that Fins will LOVE this place. 8-)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Deceased, Robert Zimmerman, Class of '0X

He wishes!  I think his vintage is a bit before the '00s  ;)

Hey hey, if you round '98 off, it is close to '00's!

I was in the Members' Lounge (bar) at Geneva National Golf Club today, having a post round refrehment with an Auggie no less. We were talking to the bartender who informed us that tomorrow was her last day, since she was heading back to school. We, being polite, asked where she went, and she replies, "St Ben's." My Auggie golf buddy just had a niece graduate from St Ben's and a nephew graduate from St John's, both Totino-Grace grads. We talked a little SJU football, and hoped that the 2012 Johnnies were better than the recent past.

Oh, I also must add that I took a few bucks off my playing companions, so, all in all, a good day.

Check out the article about intramurals in the SJU alum magazine written by Sfury.  I would to thank Sfury for making me look like a hoarder, but it is true, I can't part with those championship tees. The next time my name shows up in the alum magazine, probably my death announcement.

You'd also get your name in for contributing to the alumni fund...

Twinkies are doing well this year. Makes me crazy with anticipation for the new Vikings stadium.

Speaking of burgers and beer, remember that the Stiftungsfest celebration will be the weekend of August 24-26 in Norwood Young America. This festival started in 1861. I will be working the hamburger stand Friday night serving the famous Stiftungsfest burgers. Hairball will be playing Friday night for the street dance and Rocket Club will be there Saturday night. As you might imagine, there will also be plenty of polka music all weekend long, including the Diedesfeld Band from Diedesfeld, Germany. Hope to see you at the Stiftungsfest!! :D

I'm very familiar with the Kimball scene. My father bought a farm 2 miles north when I was in high school and it was my summer job to fix/paint all the buildings, fix fence and tend cattle one summer. Lived there for a year after I graduated. And the lake place is 5 miles from town. The "Muni" is actually the Main Street Pub, owned by Rudy and Howie Zimmer, brothers of the late Mark Zimmer of LaPlayette fame. The Triple R is owned by a local consortium, the ringleader of which is actually Zimmers' cousin, a Terwey from St. Joe. His girlfriend used to manage the Pub for many years. There's a 3rd bar in town, Son of a Butchers, owned by the Knaus boys, whose family runs the butcher shop next door. If you are EVER in the area, be sure to stop in and buy bacon, theirs is the best. And they are now famous for their sweet horseradish pickles. They tell me the sell over 75 gallons of them a week.

Fall is in the air.  We sent our boy to daycare (a U$T stronghold) dressed like this today.  ;D

Impressive technique Duff, looks like he's already a pro at shedding blocks! Probably learned this as a survival method in a UST infested environment. We all know they hold worse than most  ;)

Eleven boys from Cali on the 2012 Johnnie Roster.  Pipeline???  ;)

Most of those kids are coming through the Admissions Office, which is recruiting students very hard in certain areas of SoCal, not from the Football Office, which doesn't recruit Calif at all.  That some of these kids can play football is at best accidental (and, if they are good, fortuitous).

Maybe they haven't been told about the school with "the largest stadium video board in NCAA Division III.

I appreciate that Gene puts effort into his often interesting blog, but if you've read enough of them they remind you of reading Christmas cards from families whose children have been curing cancer and winning super bowls.

So I pick the kiddo up today, and our provider shows me a picture of her daughter holding my son is his SJU jersey with her wearing a "Hot Tommie" shirt.  Shouldn't be long before I can teach him to say, "Tommies Suck!"  ;D
