Good luck today, Johnnies!  The past is the past.  No looking back--run the table!

As difficult as the season has been keep in mind the Johnnies have lost to three of the best teams in the league...UST, Concordia and Augsburg (yes the Auggies are good...their QB threw for over 200 yds and ran for over 100 vs. BU...and had them on the ropes).  The disconcerting thing is that these loses have been lopsided.

The St. Olaf game last year and this year came down to a field goal.

Carlteon has won three games...one was a 21-14 victory over Hamline and the other was last week's 21-20 win against Macalester.

The Johnnies are going to take out some of their frustration on the Knights this afternoon.  A monkey stomp is not out of the question.

From the Facebook page of SJU Johnnie Football
We've got a message from our man Tim Juba (OL '11):

"Reading the article in Friday's StarTrib about John got me all emotional just thinking about how great of a man and coach he is, and what he has done over the past 50 some years. If you can't find a reason to show up and play tomorrow, you don't deserve to wear the red and white. Johnnie pride."

As a fan of D-III football (and son of a college football coach) it's impossible to look at Coach John with anything but respect and wish the best for him.  Ideally, it would be GREAT if he can go out on a high note.  But I think the most important thing is that he goes out on his own terms and honored big-time.  Obviously, the hope would be that he knows when the time is right for both himself and the program and everyone is on the same page.  He's iconic and I can't even imagine how many lives he has had huge impact on.

I'm not sure many people quite grasp the role a college football coach has with his kids.

How many other people in life are in position to help form the character of that many young men, especially in such a moldable season of their life?

SUMMIT!!!!!

nice piece on BU & Coach J in this morning's Strib. very insighfull!

OzJohnnie

Great win by the Johnnies and they look good doing it. I listened really hard but I didn't hear VOJ announce that Gagliardi had retired. Maybe the school changed the four-year residence policies or perhaps they adjusted the height of the blades on the lawn mowers used around campus.

Wow...wasn't really confident about BU getting a W today but had no idea they'd get dominated the way they did.  Hats off to UST; obviously on a different level from the rest of the MIAC yet again.

Oz- don't get excited-the Carleton team would have lost to Paynesville H.S., according to Duff, so not sure this brings a swarm of high caliber recruits. But this was a win they had to have.

Nick Martin could be a very special player for the Johnnies.  Now the staff needs to put the protection and weapons around him.  I know that we won't see the second coming of Blake Elliot anytime soon but a playmaker or two and an o-line that can get some push against the top teams is necessary.

What the he_l was Carleton thinking forcing out Ramler?  Thankfully the Johnnies aren't playing at that level.
I still have a feeling Kurt will someday be the guy running the SJU sidelines.

Faunch, could you enlighten us on the details of Ramler's departure?

I don't really have any details and maybe I shouldn't have said forced...however that's the impression I had.  IMO opinion you had a guy bring some level of success and competitiveness to a down program and then he suddenly resigns a couple months after the season.  I know for a fact he was out recruiting a week or so before his resignation because I saw him at my school.  Maybe I'm wrong that he was forced out.  Maybe he had issues w/ the institution or athletic department or just decided he'd had enough. I also heard somewhere that he may have received a severance package from Carleton...which would indicate he didn't leave of his own accord.  What I also find intriguing is that not much has been heard about what Kurt is up to this fall.  I personally have asked Frank at the SCTimes on his web chat and a prominent coach in the MIAC and they didn't know much.  Maybe he's just enjoying having a season off.

I personally believe he's a better candidate for the job in the post-Gagiardi era (whenever that is) than Mr. Grant.  He's played, coached and recruited in this league and youth is on his side.  That said maybe he's had enough of football and is moving on to other things....but what the hell does a guy like me really know?

As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

faunch,

Mike Grant has also played coached and recruited in the MIAC.  Youth, however, is not on his side.

Isn't he about 30 years younger than the current coach???   ;)

USTBench

If I was one of the powers-that-be at SJU, I'd probably want to bring in Wallie Kuchinski for an interview, the UST d-coordinator.

He played at Bemidji State, coached a year at Concordia-St. Paul, was the recruiting coordinator at Truman State, and has turned UST into one of the best defenses in the nation. Guy knows the area and knows what he's doing. Plus...he's young.

Probably won't happen, and I'd hate it if it did, but it'd be a nice coup for SJU.
