I'm still thinking that the best route to go is with Mike G. and Rambler as Off Cord. grooming him to eventually become HC. Leaving Jerry and Gary to run the Def.    No one will be able to step into Johns shoe's but you should atleast hire someone with the same sized feet.  Mike would be an easy transition, Very Well known/liked Name in MN/SJU, connections with top HS programs, proven winning ablility, SJU alum.....ect.   Granted, I may be a little biased as I played under Mike, and he was a great coach 25 yrs ago, but more than that, he is a great person.
Interesting scenario but it would be ill advised to name anyone as heir apparent.Kurt would fit the bill nicely, but would need to earn the position, just like in his playing days.

I agree that Mike G. has instant credibility & connection within  MN H.S. coaching circles. Would this cure the recruiting woes? Who would be ultimately responsible for recruiting the next Blake Elliott,Tom Linnemann,Alex Wesley ,Chris Moore or Brandon Novak? There need to be horses in the barn if you are going to pull the wagon.

Jerry/Gary & crew can coach up some D and history has shown that, but the team speed and either push or quickness on the D-line needs to be improved.

Mike G. & Kurt R. can certainly scheme with imagination and adjust to personnel available. Chances are running short side sweeps on 3rd & 7 would be decreased dramatically.

Let's hope the decision is made soon & building another championship run begins immediately.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Finally made it back to North Dakota. Unfortunately the extra night having to stay in the Cities will probably preclude me from attending the Stagg Bowl live. Damn blizzards.

Anyway, it was truly special to see UST make the semifinals live, and I am so proud of the program. It is great to see potential realized, I hope the alumni of the less than glamorous era can move on and truly support what's happening and appreciate how amazing this is.

Raiderfans: As always, the second we make it a little further than we've ever have before some fly-by-night knuckleheads start treating this like an espn flame war message board. Not indicative of the tribe, but I can assure you that if you get to meet DC Tom Cat or 2115 Summit you'll meet two nice guys and very good players in their hay day.

Bench, and any other St. Thomas fans, I highly recommend you attend the Stagg Bowl.  It is an unbelievable experience.  Especially if your team wins.  You might never have this opportunity again.

All things I have agonized over. Unfortunately taking over the family business in North Dakota means I'd have to fly out of Grand Forks or take two days off of work. Neither of those things are economically feasible right now. But it'll be worth it when I have a little USTBench with Mrs. Bench, expand the business to St. Paul, send USTBench Jr to CDH where he becomes an All Stater then commits to UST and becomes USTStarter, wins a Stagg Bowl for Glenn Caruso the day he retires. Then I'll go to Virginia first class and come back to my Summit Ave mansion and drink a nice bottle of Scotch I bought the day my game-winning TD scoring 4.0 GPA having son was born. Ideally anyway.

Mr. Ypsi

Bench, with the current ND economy (Menards recruited employees in Eau Claire to fly them in weekly to Minot because they couldn't find employees locally!), you should just borrow the money!  After all, you should soon be a bazillionaire! ;D

Redtooth

I am not convinced that any of the prospective candidates are willing to or should be on a staff together given the selection of the new Head Coach.  Don't count on the automatic selection of any of the runners up as coordinators or position coaches.

This hire should not be done with a short term focus, but should stand the test of both time and have immediate results.

The on campus process has me troubled...I hope the selection is weighted toward football field success and academic success along with the ability to recruit great kids willing to work incredibly hard....not who is best at punch and cookies hour.

SUMMIT!!!!!

only A Stagg bowl???  Bench if youy're gonna dream, dream big....wins 4 Stagg bowls, going 60-0 in 4 seasons....becoming the first D-3 guy to win the Heismann AND the Gagliaradi in the same season  :)
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Don't know if this means nothing or a lot, but the officiating crew for the Stagg is a WIAC crew (the referee is in the same officials assoc as I am).  An honor for him and his crew.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

If you play both offense AND defense, do you get two finalist spots or just one?

masseyratings.com predicts a 35-24 UMU victory.  I don't know.  I don't think there's a chance that UST can keep MUC(k) under 40 points and I think 17 is the max for UST(d).  I'm predicting:

MUC(k) 45
UST(d) 17

The UST football team is so much better than the basketball team this year, they are only #5 in the country.
The last shall be first and the shall be.......

And the bball team needed a miracle finish to get to OT, then barely beat a 2-7 UMAC team! :P

Yea, that would be a weird dynamic, unless the runner(s) up are interviewed & hired by the new head coach as the best candidate for the job.

Also, does anyone else think it's weird that two current members of the coaching staff are on the selection committee?

I've found that very odd from the beginning.
