Frank Rajkowski tweets that:
QuoteThe #sjufootball team will travel to Regina, Saskatchewan on May 17-19 for a pair of controlled scrimmages with the Regina Thunder...a junior football team.  The trip allows the team 10 padded practices in addition to the seven non-padded spring workouts allowed in the MIAC.

That should be reassuring to anyone concerned that Fasching wouldn't be making changes to the program.

Any of you Tommies out there reassured?  8-)

Are other d3 teams making the trip to Canadia on a tri-annual basis?  If not, then this is the start of good business for the Canadian junior leagues.  Maybe the Mexican leagues for our southern d3 brethren.  You would expect ADs to be scouring the rulebook for extra-practice regulations to sustain this every year.

EDIT: I did a little research on the Thunder and this will be no pushover scrimmage.  This is their nose tackle, Sheldon "The Sasquatch" Whalen:

St Thomas went up a few years back, if that's what you are asking?

Anybody know anything about the Gallbladder or Gall Stones?  I'm scheduled for an ultrasound tomorrow to see if that's what's giving me this pain under my rib cage and in my back.

I know that women try to claim that child birth is just as painful as passing a kidney stone. Pffffft.  As if.

EDIT:  Good golly, this is a pic of gallstone from wikipedia.  Good luck, faunch.  I hope the treatment isn't too painful.

Actually, my wife's office mate (just to be 'helpful') told her (just before I went in for a kidney stone) to tell me she'd had two kids and a kidney stone; the stone was MUCH worse.

Thanks a lot, Debbie! :P

I haven't given birth, and my wife hasn't had a kidney stone, so can't testify with any authority.  I'm too stoic ('macho'?) to scream, but I apparently was panting and moaning so loudly that my wife (and the patient in the next room!) begged the nurses to intervene!  The first shot of morphine didn't even touch the pain; the second still didn't but I mercifully passed out.  I was sort of OK when I came to a few hours later.

My guess is that Debbie was right. ;)

A little more Wikipedia diagnosis lead me to this gem:

"[W]ine and whole-grained bread may decrease the risk of gallstones."

I'm not all that into whole-grained bread but I'm still feeling pretty comfortable that I'm actively working to minimize my chances of getting gallstones.  As a matter of fact it's quitting time.  I need to go home, kick up my feet and do another round of the Wikipedia approved gallstone prevention program.

My late daughter had both and agreed with Debbie.
Mrs. 57 says her last (before surgery) gall bladder attack was worse than childbirth.
I've had kidney stones and if childbirth was like that there would only be single child families ;)

Yeah, unfortunately, it was.

Augsburg also did, and I think they may have done it more than once now. A couple of schools in New England have done it as well. Salve Regina comes to mind.

If the new rules allow this type of international trip & it can get a few more practices I say why not? I doubt that John would ever have taken part in such a trip but Gary wants to,so why not. This is a new era at SJU.  UST & Augsburg have new(er) coaches and the W-L record for SJU vs these two in recent years pretty much answers the question for any skeptical SJU fan. ::)

This has been allowed for at least 10 years, but I think only in the past five or so have border schools taken advantage of it by going to Canada.

Do I recall correctly that such international trips are only allowed once every three years?

Pat Coleman

That's correct.

Until 2004 or so, teams that made the playoffs couldn't go on these trips the following year -- it was thought that they gained too much of an advantage from the extra practices. But that made it difficult to plan such trips because they typically require a significant amount of advance work.

Years ago, the International Falls HS team used to scrimmage Fort Francis (Ont.) every fall. They'd play 11-man when the Yanks had the ball and 12 when the Canucks were on offense. Not the best in game prep, but a fair bit of fun.

Can't speak to gall stones, but I've had my share of the kidney variety. Usually very nasty pain. Had my last attack in downtown DC and had to cab it to George Washington (The Ronald Reagan ER). They were out of rooms but saw I was in so much pain that I got the only open treatment room -- the psych cell (insert Johnnie joke here). Got a lot of strange looks as folks walked by, but ended up getting great care ... plus they found a marble-sized stone that was hidden on the other side and the doc said would probably have cost me a kidney if it had gone undetected much longer.

Oh, and you don't want to think about where the scope goes.

In the context of the SJU Football program, a rule that has been in place for 10 years is "new". Heck, we only change coaches once every 60 years  ;)

Yes, Augsburg traveled up to Canada in 2010.
