I do wonder, did the administrators find it unfortunate as well?

Sad news for Tommies and all the fans of his books. Alum Vince Flynn died. Especially sad because it was prostate cancer, which can be so treatable but also can obviously be deadly.

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2013/06/19/mn-author-vince-flynn-dies-at-47/

Horrendous news-sad day indeed. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get to know Vince during my time slinging him drinks at Tiffs. Also shared some with him at the lounge, O'Garas, Billy's and Plums. Vince was a great human being and a proud son of UST-he will be missed.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
I never had the chance to meet Vince or even see him play (his playing days were my FL-NC-VA days) but between the many intveriews of his, reading & rereading his books and knowing he was as passionate about UST as I am, I feel I've lost a friend.  Rest in peace Vince.

A very touching blogpost by a good friend of his:

A new SJU program record of ten incoming Johnnies will be playing in the Minnesota All-Star Football Game:

http://www.gojohnnies.com/news/2013/6/20/FOOTBALL_0620135012.aspx

"The 10 All-Stars eclipsed the previous mark of nine that participated in the 1997 All-Star game."

Now, as we all know how unpredictable D3 recruiting classes are, this could be completely meaningless. However, I would like to point out that the four-year record of those nine that played in the '97 HS All-Star game was 41-9. In 1999 and 2000 (the junior and senior season for that group) the team's record was 24-4 with appearances in a national quarterfinal and a last-second loss in the national championship game in 2000.

I suppose someone could dig into the minutiae and give a detailed analysis of how this year's incoming class is different and tell me I shouldn't be getting my hopes up. In the meantime, I'll be cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season.

Very sad news. I knew he'd been battling cancer, but I'd thought he was on the mend. I'll be praying for his family.

That is very sad news, I loved his books, I thought Mitch Rapp was a great character.  RIP Vince Flynn.

Man what a game tonight between Hawthorn and West Coast. The Eagles brought their best game for all four quarters and this was a bruising affair. The Hawks won their eleventh in a row as both teams finished as the walking wounded. Heck of a game.

It's sure making me excited for Sept. I'm betting I have a great year all year long as a football fan.

Tough Schedule to start the season!

I just took a look at the schedules for the MIAC and couldn't help but notice that in the first 3 weeks of the season that the Johnnies and the Tommies each play UW River Falls, UW Eau Claire and then each other. If either of the WIAC teams scores a win in those first 4 games, it well could be that the MIAC team with that loss would not make the playoffs at the end of the season.

Other non-conference games that MIAC teams play this year:

Augsburg has Concordia Wisconsin who Bethel beat in the playoffs last season. They have a new coach, so who knows how that will go. Then in Nov. they play Macalester.

Bethel has Wartburg and Buena Vista - and should win them both.

Carleton starts out with Grinnell and has Macalester in October.

The Cobbers start out with NAIA Jamestown, ND and then play Buena Vista a week before Bethel does.

Gustavus starts out with Simpson and then in October plays NAIA Valley City State, whom they lost to last year.

Hamline starts out with Minnesota Morris and ends the season with Macalester.

Lastly, St. Olaf starts out the season with "Northwestern University, St. Paul" (as they are changing their name effective July 1) and then play Luther the very next week. They should win both of those games.

It is interesting to see how the schools schedule their non-conference games and their bye week into their respective seasons. Both Bethel and Gustavus have the first week off. And the Johnnies start the season off on a Friday night game. Might have to go up and see that one.

It's "University of Northwestern - St. Paul"  Get it right!   >:(   UNW with the W pronounced "Dub".  The new domain name will be unwsp.edu, don't confuse it with Stevens Point.   Other accepted names to quickly use are "Northwestern" and "that school that is so Christian it sends missionaries to Bethel".

Not Necessarily, either the Tommies or Johnnies lose an OOC game in the first week and then goes on to beat the other the following week, both teams have a equal chance at that time (if they both win out) on getting a playoff bid, it happens here and there.
