Racquetball senior year with Coach Miller. I felt that I was a relatively fit 22 yr old, and had fancied myself a solid racquetball player. Getting regularly worked over by a Coach Miller who was in his late 40's put me in my place

Similar to having your mid-40s position coach (Fasching) bench pressing more than you.  Humbling.  ;D

My freshman J-term, I think I took one of the few tough classes offered (coincidentally, my now-wife's twin sister was in the class with me, although I hadn't met my wife yet).  It was titled "Chemical Calculations" or something along those lines.  As a chem major (and now a chemist), it was probably a responsible choice, but it sucked with a capital S.  I think I struggled to get a B in there, which, compared to the classes my friends were taking, really chapped my hide.  SJU had a policy that you had to take a J-term class 3 out of 4 years, so knowing that my sophomore year would be the last J-term, I elected to take that year off.  ;D  I finished up the majority of my work-study hours over the J-term.

Looks very similar to the hit put on Voshell that didn't even draw a penalty.

And out of nowhere*...IT"S BUCKMAN !!! With a spot-on post, no less. I was shocked at the no-call on that hit, too. Voshell's head almost flew off.

Ah, speaking of the J-Term! I can remember the one I did in January of 1973 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. I had signed up for a class that I can't remember only to find out that when I got there I had been enrolled in a different class on the Lutheran faith. Good experience for a Catholic boy. ;D I do remember going to the Macamba Club the night before the first class and drinking so much that I almost threw up in the class and had to leave early. And then there was the basketball game between Augustana and South Dakota State. The security guards were patting down everyone who came into the arena to make sure no one was bringing in any frozen jack rabbits. Evidently the guards missed a few. When the South Dakota State team was introduced before the game, there were a number of frozen jack rabbits thrown out on the floor by fans from Augustana. An experience I will never forget.

at least you weren't playing NDSU, might have been some damage to the floor.

My wife's sister/her hubby & one of their sons are Auggie grads, so I have heard a number of those same stories! One year to avoid the pat down, they were forced to plant a few of the jack rabbits in the gym ahead of time. Needless to say, they weren't quite frozen by the time the game started.

That's funny.  And true.  Kiwi's have a warped accent.

Going back a few pages regarding the discussion about the SJU turnaround....

Does anyone know who is responsible for the national recruiting? It seems as though more than a few of the promising youngsters are from far and wide.
Damien Dumonceaux moved up to the title of Recruiting Coordinator when Gary moved into Head Coach. I know Damien helped Gary a lot over the years and made connections and several trips out west that are now starting to pay dividends. I also know the Freshmen from Arizona who are making contributions this year are the product of Kurt Ramler's connection in The Grand Canyon State.
That being said, the best recruiters will be the kids  and their parents going back to their high schools and relaying positive experiences they have had at SJU. Word of mouth, both positive and negative,is a powerful thing.

Prior to last season, or maybe it is this season, Coach D was full-time (maybe 3/4) Academic appointment in Admissions and travelled far and wide.  I know the Nebraska and California pipeline come from those earlier academic efforts.  I also think it was one of Gary's brilliant moves to name Coach D Recruiting Coordinator -- a) He is an awesome Ambassador for SJU academics and athletics, and b) he is great with this age group (and their parents)!

Don't know why I didn't see this previously...
Separated at birth? Former Blackhawk and current Capital forward Troy Brouwer and SJU Head Football Coach Gary Fasching.

ritz72

Good to see some of you this past Saturday.  Mrs. Ritz and I stopped in quick to visit before one of the Ritz Bitz's playoff soccer games.  Someday life will slow down and we can get back more often!

I had to weigh in on the J-Term talk:

Freshman:  Art on the Internet (not that kind)
Soph:  Sports Injuries (Had knee and shoulder surgery that off-season, so was basically the lab rat for it)
Junior:  Foundations of Military Science (Canceled 13 of 20 times!!)
Senior:  Basic Income Tax (My dad is a CPA so had the entire course done, with  minimal help of my father  ::), in 2 days.

However, by far, best class at SJU was Campus Cultural Events AKA "Clap for Credit".  Received Fine Arts credits for going to like 5-6 events during a semester.  First year they had it, they even counted concerts at Brother Willie's!!

Looks like we've got some bandwagon jumpers of our own.   ;)  That's ok, we've always got room for more.

Ritz, which ones were good to see and which ones were not?  ???

It was great to see you.  I did a double take when I saw you.

Speaking of bandwagons, the purple contingent has been very, very quiet the past couple of weeks.

At this point, the only way Saint Glen can keep his record of year over year progress intact is to win the Stagg Bowl.  Anything less is regression.

If Augsburg wins out they will be 8-2 and show an improvement over last year.Finish in the top 25 and take that momentum in to next year. This starts on Saturday vs. St. Olaf.
