J-Term classes while at SJU

90- Nuclear Deterrence-- Does it Deter?  Taught by one of the most paranoid and crazy profs ever...thought the Russians were after him
91- The Court Experience-- Spent the month in Ramsey County going to court everyday...and watched the start of the Gulf War on TV nightly
92- Interned with a Criminal Prosecutor in Ramsey County and helped put a wacko away for arson.  Tried to burn down his girlfriend's house while wearing Sears Winner brand tennis shoes with velcro laces...my roommates and I took the copy of the shoe bottoms from the scene and lifted up a lot of shoes at every mall in TC and STC.
93- OFF

Thrilled to see the SJU year so far, hope it finishes the same.

Now that's funny.  The Berlin wall fell just before that J-term (Nov 9, '89 to be exact) and the Soviet Union was in the process of disintegrating literally as he was speaking.  His question was being answered with finality before his very eyes.  Maybe his paranoia was being redirected to the school administration which would demand he come up with a new "world problems" issue to ride into one academic publication or another.

I wish I would have had that class.  Would have been a blast to challenge the assumptions underlying the question - the need for the question itself.  I'm also curious about the term "nuclear deterrence".  How is a nuclear weapon different from any other deterrent factor?  Why not just ask "does deterrence work"?  And it would be a short class because words don't get created for things that don't exist (or appear to exist) so the answer is yes.  "Who's got the keys and can make a run to the liquor store?  This j-term is over."

EDIT: And I notice you graduated in '93, Redtooth.  I did as well.  I wonder if we ran across each other.

One of my professors liked to share stories about the college from those years.  There were several students that felt nuclear war was coming.  It would be interesting to learn about the college atmosphere during Desert Storm.  Vietnam has been studied extensively.  I think the two recent wars have been well played out through social media.

Robert Zimmerman

According to Frank, Bjorkland is out for the season and Sura will miss two weeks (one week is a bye).  Sura is expected to be ready against GAC.  In hoops and coaching longevity news, Jim Smith is starting his 50th year coaching basketball at SJU today.

It was great to see you.  I did a double take when I saw you.

Speaking of bandwagons, the purple contingent has been very, very quiet the past couple of weeks.

At this point, the only way Saint Glen can keep his record of year over year progress intact is to win the Stagg Bowl.  Anything less is regression.

I've stopped commenting on the poles....so my participation is back to a normalized level.
That said, I hope a UST victory this weekend doesn't pull Bethel back to 8...rather puts both teams in top 6/5/4, etc....that is if UST wins.
The last shall be first and the shall be.......

And then there was the basketball game between Augustana and South Dakota State. The security guards were patting down everyone who came into the arena to make sure no one was bringing in any frozen jack rabbits. Evidently the guards missed a few. When the South Dakota State team was introduced before the game, there were a number of frozen jack rabbits thrown out on the floor by fans from Augustana. An experience I will never forget.
My wife's sister/her hubby & one of their sons are Auggie grads, so I have heard a number of those same stories! One year to avoid the pat down, they were forced to plant a few of the jack rabbits in the gym ahead of time. Needless to say, they weren't quite frozen by the time the game started.

With enough newbs here and apologies to the regulars, I will repost a tale I've probably noted before. But in the late '70s/early '80s, the Fightin' Sue officials tried hard to prevent frozen badgers hitting the ice when 'Sconsin was in town. When UND scored and before they could even get the "sieve" cheer going, out flew a frozen Bucky. Turns out it had been carried into the rink dressed as a baby.

I found a new beer last week.  I hoped it would be delicious but feared a big letdown.  No worries, mate.  She's beaut.  Cherry ripe.

It would appear you can order a copy of his book on the cheap.  http://www.amazon.com/Nuclear-Deterrence-Honore-M-Catudal/dp/0720117593/ref=la_B001K1N4N8_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1381929987&sr=1-5

I had a government class with him as well.

And you better be kind if you comment on the Poles in the future. As one of Polish descent, I am very sensitive to slurs in the form of jokes. >:(

We might want to take it easy on the J-term talk. We wouldn't want anyone calling this board a J-term "smokefest."

Smokefest...  I bet that was on offer at Macalester.
