Are you talking about a "Johnnie Board"?
Nope, the MIAC In Game Update Board. Quite a few of us (not even just Johnnie fans)are unable to attend the games in person, so we listen to (or watch away games 8-)) together on that board.

Massey's Predictions for Saturdays Games:

St. Olaf 17, Augsburg 41 - 96% probability of Auggie win.

Cobbers 40, Hamline 17 - 96% prob of Cobber win

SJU 31, Carleton 13 - 91% prob of SJU win

GAC 33, Valley City St 14 - 94% prob of Gustie win

UST 28, Bethel 31 - 54% prob of Bethel win

Computer rankings and predictions are what they are, obviously. But it is interesting that it has Bethel as only a 3 point favorite at home and essentially calls the game a 50-50 prob. It doesn't get much closer than that.

The predictions above were good this past week. They had the Augsburg /St. Olaf score right on the money at 41-17 and the Bethel UST game was very close just as they called it.

OK - I'll bite, where's that? I just poked around for a couple of minutes on the MIAC football website and don't see it where I think it ought to be. Got an URL?

Royals still at #5

Not true. Last week Bethel had 498 points and NCC had 538. This week Bethel has 516 and NCC 537. They are essentially co-#4's.  ;D  ;) 8-)

I predict that if BU win their next three and the Johnnies manage to beat GAC and HAM and the you somehow manage to overcome Johnnie Magic, then I think BU will finish #4.

My top four, if all stay undefeated (poor Bethel - it will hurt) prediction is:

UMU
LIN
UWW
BU

I think it's unfair that UWW will pass BU but they will beat two other top 10 teams to get there.

Retired Old Rat

I don't think they jump over UMHB.  UMHB will be undefeated.

D3footballs twitter account did say that the undefeated team out of the WIAC would break into the top 6 at the end of the year.....but that might be a little high.  UWW has lost there luster bump.

Oz,

Chatted with a guy at the gym last week. He's a former fullback for Mid-America Nazarene down in KC here. He's been a longtime rugby player. Plays for the KC Blues and used to be on the US Over 30 team. Union rules though.

I brought up Hawthorne, but couldn't remember if they played league or union? What's the low down?

Well, that would be moving past Hobart. I think that's very reasonable to suggest.

The Hawthorn Hawks play Australian Rules Football.  Your mate plays Rugby Union.  Rugby League is a clownish game created by people that weren't allowed to play Union in the old country.  I think the highest excitement rugby code is Rugby Sevens which is Union rules but only seven men a side - very fast - but I enjoy watching world class Union best of all the rugby.

Some easy reference vids for you:

Basics of Aussie Rules: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0rd9KbL1Bs

Basics of Union: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkCxbX15zvI

Basics of League: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1JBUXoGyng

Basics of Sevens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6eTIsv6e4U

As a bit of background (as far as I'm aware, all I'm about to write is accurate according to my brother-in-law's dad who told me this on a fishing trip about 10 years ago), Aussie Rules was invented in Melbourne out of the need to keep Cricket players fit during the winter months.  It started as a low contact run around (hence the no tackling after a mark) but has grown in to a full contact, full speed game in the last 150 years or so.

Union grew in the English private school network and in the traditional rugby nations still tends to be a private school sport.  League grew in the working class suburbs and still has its roots there.  Union is a much meaner sport but League is more speed and collision oriented.  There is a saying: Union is a bastard's game played by gentlemen, while League is a gentleman's game played by bastards.

Sevens grew out Union and the need to compete with League for speed and excitement.  It's very, very fast.  Here's a game (two 10-minute halves) that's pretty good to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A1XMR1JQs4

Ok, following feedback and consideration my new end if year top five (assuming BU overcomes Johnnie Magic):

LIN
UMU
BU
UMHB
UWW

And my pick for grand champion... UWW v LIN with UWW FTW.

I'm glad the SJU/Bethel game will be at SJU.  That grass field at Bethel could be in really bad shape by 11/16.  Has Bethel ever considered putting in a turf field?
There's no doubt that Bethel can play football (well, for the past 15 years or so), but their "stadium" is easily the worst in the MIAC.  I hated playing there, and I hate watching games there.

A tradition unrivaled...

I love watching Sevens. Used to love playing Sevens as well. Played a bit at W&L but we couldn't find too many club teams that wanted to play Sevens. Everyone wanted to play Union and we were often playing UVA, Richmond, Navy, Va Tech, etc and getting smashed. Sevens makes way more sense for small colleges, but back in the late 90s when I was playing no one really went that route. Happy to see Sevens in the Olympics and picking up steam.
