04 was a very down year-don't kid yourself.

And yet at the beginning of this year we would have taken 7-3 with enthusiasm.  Funny how perspective changes.  Now 8-2 will be ok and 9-1 will be great.  7-3 will be a let down.  No one said that pleasing fans was easy.

What really crawls under the skin of the folks on the corner of Cretin and Summit is how this season was supposed to be a coronation for the Toms. Here we are six weeks into the season and the Toms already have two conference losses and could realistically miss the playoffs.

Have you ever put down a horse?  I have and it quivers and shakes, looking for anything to grasp on to both physically and mentally.  That's what we have here.

;D I love it.

SagelessSam - this would have been funnier had you not blown your load so quickly.  2 losses is a long way from a 4 year stretch of irrelevance.  The UST program is being built for the long term*, so this horse is still very much alive and kicking.

If the idea of not meeting expectations is clever, then SJ1 ought to be awfully careful about throwing stones.

*When you think about if SJ1 was being built for for the long term in the early 2000's, what can you point to other than its long term coach?  Relative to Mount Union, it appears SJ1 didn't have much of a long term program, other than its head coach, for all those years.  Fasching appears to be changing that....so props to him.

612Auggie

After watching the Auggies play st olaf last weekend i think the Auggies will beat the cobbers. Ayrton did not run much, but you could tell that his hamstring was feeling better and lack of running was the game plan for him. I think he will be back to his normal self and pull off a close game at Concordia.

these parents better hope their kid never plays a game vs an MIAC team:

they'd probably be seeking federal protection!

I gotta say I'm really unimpressed by this soft gloves treatment people are asking for. Getting thrashed is an important lesson - dealing with adversity and disappointment. Also in order to bring the bottom up they are pulling the top down. That, too, is a bad lesson although maybe with fewer hut feelings. Maybe all the more nefarious because of its non-hurtful nature.
Oz,
You have been away from the USA for  too long. I agree with your statement, but we now live in an America that does not resemble the America we grew up in. This is an America where everyone gets a ribbon and Little League teams do not keep score and everyone bats every inning. Two weeks ago a Connecticut middle school banned the following on the playground at recess: " footballs, soccer balls, LaCrosse balls, baseballs, the game of tag, cartwheels" because theses activities are too dangerous.
As my old man would put it "the country is going to hell in a hand basket". We are experiencing the whoosification of America and I shutter to see what it looks like 30 years from now.

Sadly, Amen. I'm younger and can still see it. What scares me is what this means for our nation if there were to be a situation of large-scale war. History shows us conflicts aren't going anywhere. And the saltiness of the dough-goys and G.I.'s was honed by their upbringing.

Our military is still filled with fine men of that caliber. If you need evidence let me suggest reading the following: The Warrior Elite or Lone Survivor. But what happens if we had to go back to a draft in a time of severe need? What quality American will we be calling into service in such a situation? Our coddling culture won't serve us in these environments.

And that says nothing about what it means in the marketplace...I digress  :-\

HB-I LOVE Lone Survivor-have been recommending it for years. I actually ran into Marcus at a bar in the Marriott in Palm Desert, CA. and had the chance to have a few suds with him. He's as solid of a guy as you would imagine. I can't wait for the movie to come out. I'm actually 3/4 of the way through Feerless and recommend it as well. These guys are the real heroes our kids should be looking up to.

CT-you're not the "lone Republican" here. I'm looking forward to meeting the new President, Dr. Julie Sullivan on 11/19 at the East Bank Club. Any chance you'll be in attendance? I've heard good things about her. I have a buddy whose brother coaches basketball at the University of San Diego (where she came from) who said she's a big proponent for athletics and said she did alot of positive things for them at USD. I hope that rings true as both Fr. Dease and Dienhart left big shoes to fill in that regard.

Thanks for the heads up oo!  Please forward info I will try to make it...we will have a Chicago Tommie smoke fest!

Oh, CT. I don't even know what to do with you anymore.

But before anyone else spanks you guys, let me mention that political talk is not allowed. This is a beer, chick, fishing, D-3 football board.  8-)

What am I going to do tomorrow? I'm bored already!

ESPN College Game Day is in town. I can't decide if I want to head over to campus and check it out or avoid that part of town like the plague...

For reasons beyond my understanding, North Dakota and Montana have chosen to have their smaller schools align with the NAIA. Carroll College is a national power in the NAIA and have an absolutely beautiful backdrop for small college football. I think it would be awesome if what was left of the old DAC - 10 got together with the Montana schools and joined D3 together.

Presentation had difficulty keeping up with the D3 sport requirements as I believe they couldn't get enough girls to run cross country.  It can get pretty difficult to recruit to small towns in the Dakotas if you don't have any scholarship money to throw around.

I can certainly see Mayville St. and Presentation having difficulty keeping up with VCSU, Dickinson State and Jamestown College. Too bad you can't do a football only affiliation.

I hear Dickinson girls are easy.

Was living in Dickinson when the film came out. Theater roared.

And, yes, while some were, the kiln explosion line rarely worked.

Bennie....no more pink, please.
If you go it will be worth it for everybody.
Wear pink so we can see you.  :)

I just had Falling Skies recommended to me.  Anyone here watch it?  Should I put the effort in?  The wiki page sounds ok so I'm willing to give it a go.

Found these stats off of Gene's blog:

1) Consistent, competitive play has been a Purple trademark since Caruso's arrival in 2008. Glenn's St. Thomas teams have led after halftime in all 45 games against MIAC opponents. And last Saturday's seven-point loss -– decided by a BU go-ahead touchdown with 40 seconds to play -- was the Toms' largest margin of defeat to a conference opponent since 2007.

2) This year: The Tommies have outscored opponents 59-0 in the first quarters this season and 62-3 in the third quarters.

That second stat speaks to a young club....which we hoped would play more senior with the number of games under their belt.  Oh well.

Stanbob squarepants, I see you like to use the sympathetic passive aggressive question as a response quite often.

In the rest of my life I stopped using that type of response after junior high.  It's helped.

Nothing wrong with taking a saber metric look at those two losses. What was John's largest margin of defeat?
