Last I heard he was still at Wal-Mart.  There was a rumor he was up for the St. Olaf job when OJ left.  I don't think he was a real candidate with the way he left St. Olaf.  I think he has to work at Wal-Mart for a few more years due to his contract with them. My guess is he will resurface shortly with a D1 or NFL team.  He's got the references now to be a candidate for one of those positions.  My preference would be to purge most of what Meidt has left at St. Olaf.  Several coaches at St. Olaf have needed to be shown the door from the football program for some time.  It may be true about a few other sports.  St. Olaf is a learning community, and I am not sure they bring a lot to the community on any level.

DI, maybe. NFL, not a chance. His references aren't that good, they all go back to horrible Washington Redskins teams. Jim Zorn, his in with the Redskins and NFL, doesn't even have an NFL job right now. Add to that, Meidt has been out of coaching for way too long to get back into the NFL. And I'm not sure he wants to. If that was his ultimate goal, he'd have sought another coaching gig after Washington. He had to know that by going the Walmart route he was in essence killing his future NFL coaching opportunities.

The other piece being, he's approaching the new season career-wise  as an opportunity to make money and secure his financial future. I don't think he's interested in the level of pay he'd get at a DIII school or that he'd want to go back to Olaf.

Now, if Caruso actually left UST (which I'm not predicting) would Meidt be enticed by that situation? Possibly. He'd get payed better than he did at Olaf and he'd have better resources at his disposal. Still a long time out of coaching, and I don't know if UST would want him.

I have it on very good authority the UND job will  be open this Sunday. Caruso would be an excellent candidate considering he has OC'd at USD, coached at NDSU, has head coaching experience in an area UND recruits, learned his defense from UND and has hired former UND standouts Digger Anderson and Brett Holinka.

However, UND alums are looking for a sexy name with UND connections like Brooks Bollinger (from Grand Forks dad was OC for UND) (coaches at Pitt) or Tim Tibesar (All-American linebacker for UND, coaches for Chicago Bears)

But, if Caruso were to get that job I would hope UST would make a strong play on keeping Kuchinski on as head coach. Just speculation, based on no authority whatsoever

Mike Grant is a lock...doesn't he have a kid on the team.

uh, Grant applied for the job once before...and lost to Roney (that was Roney's ONLY win over SJU or anything directly or indirectly associated with SJ1)

For some reason I remembered Meidt sticking around for one extra year.  Can I blame it on old timers?  It probably shows how much I care about the NFL which is absolutely 0.  College and high school football all the way for me.

Living in Texas do I have any hope of getting a MIAC team to play in a playoff game down here?  I know it has happened in the past, but I am guessing it is not likely.

Getting WAY ahead of ourselves. But it's possible UMHB will host either the North or West region in the semis. Then it's a question of which team is repping said region. So there's a chance...and about 100 variables.

Aaaaaand Johnnie fans are back to hoping that Caruso goes elsewhere.  Topics on this board truly are cyclical in nature.   ;)

I have no idea what UST pays Caruso but I'm guessing it's comparable to what Chris Mussman makes now (roughly 150K or so). I think Craig Bohl at NDSU makes $300K after he hits all of his incentives (which he does every year) which is partly covered by boosters. I also believe there are some endorsements in there.

UND is building a new practice facility and has a long term plan to renovate the stadium (though they'd never admit it, the blueprints/artist renderings have been leaked) and get back on campus again and I think you need a guy with a lot of energy to sell that idea back to the alums and fan base.

I certainly hope Caruso stays right where he's at considering his family is right there in the heart of the neighborhood and I am a alum of UST and UST football. But I wouldn't hate seeing him in GF, considering I have season tickets to UND football and it's been really tough to watch lately.

That being said, Tibesar or Bollinger gets the job.

I definitely figured so much.  I haven't been able to do MIAC game in some time with living overseas and then working back in the states.

Bench, do you have any idea what the UND job would pay vs. what Caruso is making at UST? Would it make sense to uproot his young family to be your neighbor.....?

105,

I couldn't find info on the UND football salary.  Craig Bohl at NDSU is making $373K this year.  However, the UND hockey coach is making just under $650k.

I figured a D3 job was anywhere from $50-80k annually.

If you have the time in the next few years or so.  Catch the UND game at U of MT.  Games at Washington-Grizzly stadium in Missoula are the best.

Oh most definitely. Missoula and Bozeman are two must-see spots for me to watch a game. Really hoping UND doesn't sign another lease with the Alerus Center, I would like them to get outside and schedule Cal Poly and UC Davis during a November playoff chase.

Sorry for the double post, but I know that most of this money is covered by boosters and alum groups. The base state salary is much lower for both coaches.

That's what made NDSU football games fun when I was in F-M, back when they were winning D-II titles:  southern teams coming in to play at Dakotah Field in Nov/Dec. Not sure what they were thinking as they deplaned and saw the temperature.

It's official Tyus Jones has chosen to play basketball at Duke.  So the big 3 MN high school players have chosen out of state schools.

Rashad Vaughn hasn't committed yet, and won't until spring.  However, he's going to basketball player factory Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, as opposed to a MN school this year, so it is all but a given that he will go elsewhere.  MN is still on his list though.

Edit: One consoling factor, given that Jones and Travis didn't pick MN, and Vaughn is unlikely to, is that none of them went to Wisconsin, as so many of MN's good players have done in recent history.

While I credit Beau Ryan for consistently getting the job done, regardless of his squad's talent level, his brand of basketball is horribly ugly.

Basketball discussion concluded.
