If there is a team in the country that was anticipating a 'correnation' more than UST, it was those boys out west.

Yeah, we had high expectations, fell short, and it's a sucky feeling.  We'll dust ourselves off and try again next season.  Maybe we look stupid for always putting those National Championship expectations out so publicly but I love Linfield is always trying to reach for the top.

As far as the MIAC is concerned. ..Go Johnnies.

Ok. I'll bite.

That's an unfair statement.  I've been following the fellas from Linfield since 2002 when we met in the playoffs.  Sure, they like to have fun, talk a little smack, etc.  They are very proud of their team, as they should be.  They expect to be a top 5 or 10 team every year.  Which, in their case, quite reasonable.  But, they know what it's like to win a national championship and they know what it's like to come up short, as they did last Saturday.  They know that it's what happens on the field that counts.  They are also very humble an classy when they lose.  Including the 2000 miracle in the mud.

The MIAC is probably as deep as it's ever been.  It's real early, but that's what makes it fun, what does everyone think for next year?  Is Bethel now the team to beat, is UST still on top after a one year drop, will Concordia get that extra needed win, or will Augsburg finally live up to the hype?
I see things getting tighter. Bethel graduates a ton of talent. UST has shown they have flaws and can be beaten,I don't think this year will be much different than next year. Perhaps the team or teams the Toms lose to,but they can be beaten. SJU will have another year of aggressive recruiting. Looking at just one year of aggressive recruiting did with productive Freshmen, I like the Johnnies chances going forward. Cobbers are always tough and will bring in more Montana mountain men looking for the bright lights that can only mean the Fargo-Moorhead metroplex. Auggies are knocking at the door. Gusties are legit and should continue to shake things up in the MIAC. Yea, I see it getting tighter in the MIAC.

Well Oz, I finished watching the AFL game tonight and I must say that there is a lot of running involved. It reminded me of what we would do when there wasn't enough guys at the village park to play a football game but we still had some steam to blow off. We used to play a form of "keep away" where the guy with the ball would run around until tackled or he tossed the ball to someone else. Very one sided, as it was everyone else against the guy with the ball. You learned how to avoid people with moves and speed. Usually we only had to do this for 15 or 20 minutes until the rest of the guys would finally show up and we could play football.

Thanx for the link.

I know how it finishes and I still get wound up watching the last quarter and hoping for the Hawks to win.

EDIT: Plus it was the sound from MMM radio, not the actual TV call.  You may have noticed one of the radio idiots referring to spectacular goals as sausages.  That's because he's 14 going on middle-aged and is using rhyming slang: sausage roll / goal.  Other common rhyming slang includes 'porkies': pork pies / lies.  And septics for us: septic tanks / yanks.

St. Glenn is a coach that I love to hate. If he goes to UND, NDSU, Princeton, Central Connecticut State, Morgan State, James Madison, Weber State, or Eastern Michigan (all of whom have head coach job postings on the NCAA Market at NCAA.org), it will take some spice out of the best rivalry in Division III sports.

Maybe this is just me feeling my oats concerning the direction of the SJU football program, but I won't be one looking to find him a new job this off-season.
Beating up on UST during my time at SJU (2003-2007) was fun to watch--only one game was even close (15-12 at O'Shaughnessy for Gagliardi's 408th career victory in 2003), but there wasn't much spice.

In other, more important news, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Straight Bourbon Kentucky Whiskey possesses rich aromatic notes of dark fruit, caramel,
sharp honey, chocolate, marzipan and toasted oak, and a delightfully smooth finish with the lingering taste of honeyed apple.

Amen my friend! I was about to come on and throw out a Woodford Reserve plug myself when I read that we'd added bourbon to the acceptable off seasons topics list. This is craft bourbon at its finest. When you're the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, you know you're doing something right.

A fun side note...I was turned on to Woodford Reserve by, of all people, a pastoral colleague from North Carolina. As a true southern gent, he also smokes a pipe and carries a concealed handgun (not in the pulpit, as far as I know  :o)!

Only because I've become a follower of the Ivies while living in NYC and was surprised to see Princeton listed because they have had a tremendous turnaround and their coach is regarded as one of the best in the league, their real football team doesn't actually have an opening. If Caruso leaves for Princeton it would be to take over as the "sprint football head coach" at the school.

Although I can now amuse myself with the idea of Caruso leaving for the position and finding out too late it's for the sprint team.

Caruso listed at 9th
http://bisonmedia.areavoices.com/?p=89958

This is quite the list:

Quote
1. Chris Klieman, NDSU defensive coordinator, maybe needs to be convinced not to go to Wyoming.
2. Scottie Hazelton, Nevada defensive coordinator. Former NDSU defensive coordinator and architect of first national title from the defensive side. USC experience helps.
3. Pat Perles, offensive line coach, Syracuse. Former Bison offensive coordinator who went to the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs before that staff was fired.
4. Todd Wash, defensive line coach, Jacksonville Jaguars. We get that NFL guys don't come back because of the NFL money, but here's the question for the former Bison assistant and player: If you ever want to be a head coach, now is the time because it's not going to happen in the NFL.
5. Jimmy Burrow, defensive coordinator, Ohio University. Former Bison assistant who has been a career assistant.
6. Tim Beck, offensive coordinator, Nebraska. Writing is on the wall with the Pelini era, best to get moving now.
7. Brian Ward, defensive coordinator, Western Illinois. This guy just has CEO leadership written all over him.
8. Rob Ambrose, head coach, Towson. He's brought that program to FCS success.
9. Glenn Caruso, head coach, University of St. Thomas. Great recruiter who knows how to run a program, no matter what level.
10. Brent Pease. A Montana guy, former NFL quarterback who was recently fired as Florida's offensive coordinator.

If he lands the NDSU job, it would be the most impressive thing Caruso has done to date, IMO. Those are some serious candidates, and they should be, given how sweat a gig NDSU is for an FCS school.

What sets Caruso apart is connection to the program combined with head coaching experience. None of the other candidates have both, as far as I can tell from this list. He's also shown that he can win at a place where there are resources and institutional support available. The real question is, are they looking for a guy with 'big time' experience or HC experience? His ability to rebuild a program won't count for much at a place like NDSU, though it certainly can't hurt him either. His proven track record as a coordinator and recruiter at the FCS level separates him from most other HC candidates from lower levels that apply for a position like this.

One thing we've all gotta love about Glenn, he keeps things interesting for us over the holidays, year in and year out!  :) 8-)

Caruso can't claim any FCS coaching experience.  While he recruited guys that would eventually play at the FCS level, he coached at NDSU and South Dakota prior to their jump to D-1.

My tastes in Bourbon tend toward the craft, and small batch brands. Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, and Makers Mark are all good. I have a bottle of John J Bowman - a Virginia distilled brand - which is also good. The smoothest I've ever had, by far, is Jack Daniels Single barrel.
