HoW about a really tough favorite son question?  I don't think we have any Hibbing-ites here so we'll have to argue it ourselves:

Kevin McHale, Bobby Zimmerman or Jeno Paulucci?

Actually, this thread leads me to an interesting thought: who has been the most important Minnesotan (maybe we should throw Wisconsinite into the mix as well for our eastern brothers)?  There are a lot of possibilities.

I'm going with William Colvill of the First Minnesota. He led 200 men in a suicidal charge that saved the Battle of Gettysburg, the Civil War and our country.  He's an easy choice, I know, but it's easy because it's so strong.

Most people that live around here have no idea of the Minnesota volunteers that played this vital role in American history. Should be taught in every school in the state. There is a monument to them at Gettysburg.

Right on, Oz.

It's a tremendous story. One thing about where we live now is the proximity to Civil War sites. We can get to Gettysburg, Antietam, Bull Run and Harper's Ferry in not long over an hour so we get to one or two at least once a year. On one of our first trips to Gettysburg we did the cemetery tour and the ranger will pick a topic to end the trip through the cemetery.

Our ranger picked First Minnesota and we got the whole story. I'd known pieces of it, but he really put it all together.

BTW, if anyone is visiting, hire the ride-along guide for the driving tour or at least get the podcast for the drive.

A quick summary for any reader interested:

Had a nice visit over the weekend with an old friend who was making his first trip east since he played with the Gusties against the Marines at Quantico. Gettysburg was one of the main stops on the trip. He took an amazing photo of the Minnesota memorial at night.

Took a drive today to a local Civil War site, the Monocacy Aqueduct, which the rebels tried to destroy but it was too sturdy. Looks like a bridge but it actually routed mule-towed barges over the river as part of the C&O Canal that runs along the Potomac ... an amazing engineering feat that was completed just in time to be made obsolete by railroads. Nearly 180 years old and it is still solid as a rock.
