Hey, looks like curtains for Melvins     http://www.wctrib.com/articles/index.cfm?id=5758&section=homepage   As far as I'm concerned, the dude is kind of a d-bag anyway, and now he's going to let some developers tear down a Spicer Landmark.  Anybody with a few extra clams to throw in and save this fixture of Green Lake??

That sucks.  Better make this summer a good one.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Esq-
You covered hockey pretty thoroughly, but failed to point out that the 2005 UST @ SJU game drew a D-3 record crowd of over 4400.

While SJU has been very competitive under Harrington, they went eons (OK, 46 years) without a title pre-JH.  John has built them into a national power (but he will always be "the other John at SJU").

Meanwhile, UST has won more than double the number of MIAC championships as any other school (27, to 2nd place GAC's 13) and has 2 national runner-up showings in the past decade. Terry Skyrpek at UST is nationally recognized as one of THE best coaches (not quite a 'Gags on ice', but close). Between his playing days at Cretin & SMU and his HS coaching stint at Hill-Murray before taking the UST job and his UST era, he has never been associated with a team that posted a losing record.

Surprisingly, Mac is 3nd in MIAC titles with 12, ahead of even UMD, even though the Scotties folded their program (melted their ice?) over 30 years ago.

But recently, the top two dogs now are (in no particular order) UST & SJU. St. Olaf and Bethel are rapidly becoming contender/national powers. As you mentioned GAC is always strong. You can never rule SMU or Augs out-- both have been up & down over the past 15-20 years but with more "up" years than "down" ones. Cord used to be a huge national power, but has struggled the past decade or so. Ham is struggling, changing coaches too often to build, but they have a very good goalie (a F/Y I think) who could be to them what Rick Gregory was to SJU a few years back-- the backbone that allows them to build a team on.

People...no one cares about hockey. This is a football and beer board. I learned that with my posting of the girls basketball info. Hopefully you are as quick on the uptake as I am.

Let's stick to discussing Hamms and why the Gusties won't be any better even with a new stadium. It's much more enjoyable to read about.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

+K to Wonka for that sharp bit of wisdom (mark it down it doesn't happen often).  Maniac's boring diatribes (see 5400 word POEs) make me drowsy.

I met Dave Nelson, head coach of Minnetonka High School the other day if anyone knows him or if anyone has even heard of Minnetonka High School. Good guy.

Amen Willy.
I think the Gusties might be a little better with their new stadium, but hell, no one cares about them either.
+K for keeping us on the straight and narrow.

Interesting JU, very interesting (his kid is gonna be a sophmore QB at the Johnnies arch rival in football, Concordia College this fall).  Was he out in Beantown hanging with his brother at Curry College?  ROR and I are quite familiar with him.  Real nice stand up guy hailing from the Anoka MN mecca.  Most members of MIAC PP know him as the 2004 head coach of the state champion Minnetonka hs football team.

Jonny,

I grew up with Dave Nelson.  Graduated from Anoka High School with Dave.  His father, Stan, was the longtime coach of the Tornadoes.  Older brother Steve a former longtime linebacker with the Patriots.  Steve is now AD and head football coach at DIII Curry in Mass.

Besides being a real nice guy and great football coach, Dave is also very smart.  He married one of my cousins.   8)

Sorry TDT.  I posted before I saw this post of yours.

+k to tmerton for supporting "someplace nice."

And +k to ROR for showing up today, unlike the alumni standup last week. I walked by the table on my way out and there was one nametag there that wasn't picked up -- yours.

I always though Salem was pretty nice, and I have been there in December when it was 70 degrees out.

No apologies necessary ROR.  fins just exposed you big time.  Better have a damn good excuse.

And I have been there in December when it was 7 degrees out. Was there for about 24 hours, but still had to check a large suitcase so I could bring my boots and ice fishing togs.

fins,
I can give the Gold Guarantee it won't be 7 degrees in mid-December in any of my fav locales.  Weather is one thing, when you have nothing else going for you in a city ala Salem, you must be paying the NCAA a pretty penny for the rights or just putting up the webmaster of d3football.com in luxury accomodations all week long.

Like I said, "It might be cold, but at least there's nothing to do."

The all time record high for Dec. 15 in Salem is 75; same for Dec. 16; the record for Dec. 17 is 72.  Sounds like they don't get to the 70s very often.

How does one get to Salem - for those of us not within driving distance who will be flying?
