I was shocked at how low the attendance was...1,017.

UMD has won multiple national titles recently, just finished an undefeated regular season, and was playing last year's champs, and barely 1000 people show up?  I know Duluth is a hockey town, but man, I'd have thought you'd get over 1000 students alone there, let alone townies...

Benchwarmer:  I assume you watched your squad play on the video on Saturday.  Do TDT a favor.  Break it down for us.  What stood out?  Strengths/Weaknesses from Wartburg etc.

Just wanted to say hello to my pals Chewey & Brice who I know have been lurking here on the MIAC PP.  Good seeing you goofy meatheads at the game on Saturday.

Wartburg has an incredible O-Line and a big shifty back in Domeyer. Brandon Richardson is a nice compliment to Domeyer out of the backfield and they honestly don't lose much in terms of their ability to run when Domeyer catches a breath, I believe Richardson is running at a clip of 7 ypc and has over 500 total for the season himself. Schrader as QB can stand in the pocket and fire darts but when he escapes the pocket he is equally as dangerous because he can run just as well as he can throw. They'll even throw in a read option occasionally and he was able to gash UST for a big run towards the end of the game.

They have an above average secondary and two linebackers that are everywhere in Gunner Tranel and Will Jansen. Tranel broke up a TE screen (I think) early in the game and I thought he honestly killed one of our players, he hits that hard. Also, if you throw at James Garlock's direction too often, you're gonna have a bad time.

I think a MIAC sized O-Line accompanied by strong running by Sura will wear on the Knights a bit. I had trouble telling from the camera angle but it seemed they may have been in cover 2 quite  a bit which left linebackers attempting to cover our bigger more athletic tight ends in the middle of the field when our WRs were streaking down the field, which led to some big plays for UST. Because the middle of the field was vulnerable UST attempted to hit a long post on (I think) about 3 separate occasions for a big play, but each time it was well covered. UST was able to hit some intermediate sideline routes often, which I know Bungum can run quite well.

All-in-all, it's a winnable game for SJU if they tackle well at the point of contact and get off the field on 3rd down, which means getting home before Schrader can either escape or hit Jacobsmeier. Domeyer was seemingly bottled up at the line of scrimmage on almost every play in the 1st half and somehow he'd keep churning and get 6 or 7 yac. One interesting stat that allowed UST to hang in there was that they were 7/7 on 4th down conversions, so if SJU can weather the storm early, and Fasching is willing to take a risk or two, I think SJU has as good of a chance as anyone.

I think this is a great match up honestly. I usually only watch the Stagg Bowl after UST gets bounced, but I'll probably tune in on Saturday. Also, Wartburg's webcast is a little shaky in the camera work department, but their play-by-play and color guy seem like pros. Very impressed. Not overly homerish and very knowledgeable.

Cricket is by and large an amazingly boring sport. But it has idiosyncrasies. One of them is that bean ball is not only legal but a legitimate part of the game. A player was pinged today by a high, hard bouncer and is in critical condition undergoing brain surgery.  The delayed reaction is terrifying.

A news report from a New Zealand channel (the accents are a whole different kind of terrifying.)

The trick is to bring lots of booze. I used to go to games with friends in London and Cambridge. The first time we went dry and most of us were off to the pub within an hour. The next time we brought charcuterie, sandwiches, and a case of Champagne. Cricket's one of the few sports that includes sanctioned lunch breaks and this slow pace encourages day drinking, which in turn makes the whole thing far more enjoyable.

Thanks Bench.

Are you implying that some teams have announcers who are homers?  ;)  I can think of two, both with "Saint" in their names.

Hey all. Longtime follower, but haven't posted in a few years. Another Cobber fan for the board. Anyways, reading that article sounds like the ending was pretty similar to the infamous Cobber, Royal game from a couple years ago. Interesting that this game the refs chose not to throw a flag.......

The fundraising could go something like this:
Contact all the players from the past 30 years. I know there is attrition from freshmen year to senior year, so let's just say their are 25 core players per class, so 750 core football players over 30 years. Bring them in to the auditorium and make a presentation. Ask them to commit $500 each over the next year. The pledge can be one lump sum, quarterly or monthly, you have $375,000.00 plus 750 evangelists for the project.

Next send out a letter from Steve Johnson to all  football parents during Johnson's time at BU asking for a donation to the project and asking them to spread the word about the project. There may be another $50K-$100K. The parents who sent their kids to BU to play for Johnson, love Steve Johnson.

Next send a letter to all BC/BU graduates over the past 30 years. Of those BC/BU graduate you may get 20% who donate $100.00, so that's another $400,000.00.

Next find "key donors" someone or a group that will do matching funds on the campaign,or find 50 people or couples who will donate $50,000. It's easier to find 50 @ 50K than one @ $2.5M.

Now, all of a sudden BU has $3M+ for a field, weight room & locker room for the football team. This is just an illustration of how this could work.

You're hired!!    ;D

Yes, I agree. If UMD really had players come onto the field then they should have thrown the flag. It more than likely was a judgement call that the players coming onto the field didn't interfere with the play. If I remember correctly, in the BU game the fumble happened close to the Cobber bench and the players coming off the sideline were close to the ball and could be considered as affecting the play (by interfering with the players on the field attempting to recover the ball). Maybe in the UMD game the sideline players weren't close to the action so they refs decided not to throw the flag. Without seeing the video I have no idea, just venturing a guess why they didn't throw a flag, but regardless a penalty was committed according to the rules and a flag should have been thrown.

Just going from memory, I believe only a couple were of the 4th & 1 variety. Talk about frustrating!

From what I remember, the 2002 installation at Clemens Stadium was somewhere in the $175,000 to $225,000 range. But, that was over a decade ago.

I believe the initial install in 2002 was in the neighborhood of $750K.  That included the excavation, installation of the base and drainage, and the turf.  Subsequent replacements are cheaper because the under-workings are already in place.  Maybe Redtooth can chime in--he was a big part of that project.

Ask and you shall receive....been lurking on the board all year without a post.  I am thrilled at the great season the Johnnies have had and could not be happier for Jim G.  I think they are playing fabulous football in all three phases and I hope it continues in Iowa....although they won't have the pleasure of Thanksgiving at an Old County Buffet in Tacoma like Duff and I shared in 2000.

In terms of the turf, Duff was very accurate on pricing and design.  The initial installation in 2002 was $675,000 with all work done including inlaid lines and logos.  The gift we received to pay for the turf came from Bill Clemens and included a few extra dollars.  The Board and monastery did not want us to use a capital campaign strategy like the one someone mentioned where all players give a little....we were coming off a few campaigns and there was a fear of donor fatigue.  John and I were authorized to make the approach to Bill and he agreed immediately to help.  We then had a convince a number of internal folks (Business Office, Design Committee and monastery) that this was a good decision.  It helped that our grass field had been trashed during the playoff game against UWSP (game played in 3" of rain) followed by 15" or snow that forced us to play the West Region championship against PLU in the FargoDome.

Lots of good financial, safety and environmental reasons to do so.....I still have the white paper I did to research it.  Fast forward; SprinTurf is now owned by a Johnnie in the investment world.

Great stuff, highly recommend it for teams that play late with the playoffs.....people thought I was crazy and now nearly every team has it someplace; game field or practice fields.

Ha!  I knew you'd come through!
