I would say that the vast majority of Football and Men's Basketball teams are profitable especially when you consider the revenue sharing from the bowl games and march madness that is distributed to the schools through the conferences. The relatively poor schools can make millions by playing away games in the non-conference season.

But, not profitable enough to create a JV/club program that would be eligible to compete for an NCAA Championship at another level.

A quick look of 2010 statistics showed that of 346 NCAA D1 basketball teams, 203 (58%) were at break-even or below.

How does Duke "lose" $2M and the Gophers "make" $7.8M ;is the Big Ten revenue sharing plan that much better than the ACC plan?  :o
The Big Ten distributed out $26M per school in 2013 compared to $16M for the ACC.  Duke isn't losing money but they probably aren't as profitable as the Gophs.  The new Big Ten TV deal will probably get this to $50M.

Norwood Teague said last night on KFAN that the $26M is already spent. Must be for the new athletic facilities. He did not mention the soon to be $50M revenue from the new TV deal with BTN.  I have read that the Big Ten is the most profitable of the 5 Power Conferences.

Good find Old Auggie- +K for you. :D
Assuming this info (most profitable of Power 5) is accurate, then the facility improvements must be around the corner. The coaches should be paid accordingly (see Jim Harbaugh comment about assistants from  12-30-14) and the Big 10 should challenge for championships in FB, Men & Women B-ball & Ice Hockey year in & year out. Convincing the student athletes to come to the frozen tundra when they grew up in the south or west coast is another reality.....

HAPPY NEW YEAR already Oz  ;D

Thank you, 57.  Sitting here in the first morning of 2015 I have to say it's very similar to the last morning of 2014. No discernible change despite the clock ticking past midnight.

Yeah, New Year's Day is like the day after an election - all that anticipation and then nothing changes! :P

Were you Y2K compliant? Reminded me of the swine flu scare when I was in college.  :P

I don't see that this was mentioned as I skimmed the comments, but in my (limited) experience, club teams at Division 1 schools are payed for by student fees, not the athletic department. Basically, they get their money from the student goverment. With as expensive as football is, I can see why few schools have club football teams. Insurance costs...yikes! Even here the club hockey team and club swim and water polo teams have to do fund raisers (sell shirts/hoodies, pucks, etc) to help cover the expensive ice and pool rental costs.
High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, roughing... everything else is just figure skating.  ~Author Unknown
