JV talk is interesting.
A few years ago, at least, UMU had a full ten game JV schedule.
I'd say that helps a program, indeed.

Agreed. Does Linfield have something similar to that?

I remember Ryan Hoag on the sideline yelling about how he would burn me if he were on the field (I played CB). I will admit, I likely egged him on because I knew he had no more eligibility and I could say whatever I wanted.

Yeah, he probably could have burned you, but that doesn't really matter since he had trouble catching a ball.  ::)

Morning gang. This past weekend was not too surprising, as all 4 teams that I thought would win, did just that.  As I mentioned last week, I wondered if we'd see a drop off in Concordia after playing so hard to beat Bethel. Almost had an upset down in Northfield. The bigger surprise to me was how easily St. Thomas man-handled the Auggies - wow. For the coming week Bethel is idle.

The first game of the coming week will be the one that starts the latest, thanx to the good neighbor, as Hamline goes cross town to St. Thomas. I was at the Hamline/Bethel game this past weekend and at some point in the second quarter Hamline's senior running back, Austin Duncan, came out of the game and did not return. He ended the day with only 17 yards on 10 attempts. Hopefully he can be healthy for this Tommie game to help keep it closer. The Tommies will coast after getting ahead by 3 or 4 touchdowns, whether or not Duncan is in the game.

The second game for the week is Augsburg travelling up to Concordia-Moorhead. The Auggies get to see power-run football for the second week in a row. Hopefully, they learned something from the spanking the Tommies put on them so they can push the Cobbers back on their stalks, up against the fence, and make it a game. My guess is that the Concordia coaching staff will not be taking it easy this week because the Knights finished the game being only 3 points out of it.  Could the Auggies win this game? Yeah, but I don't think they will.

The last two games for the week are both about equal in pull, in my mind, as they each have their own intrigue. Gustavus goes up to St. John's and Carleton goes across town to St. Olaf and fighting for the Goat Trophy. Both games could be close  and in each game, either team can win. The Johnnies were idle this past week, so they are fresh and healthy. They also have the home field advantage. The "however" in that is, the last time the Johnnies were home they lost to their rivals. So, they'll want to wash that taste out of their mouths. The Gusties are riding high being the first team outside the D3 Top 25 this week. I expect though, that they are done winning games for the rest of the year and will finish 6 and 4, just like last year. I've been wrong before, and if the Gusties figure out a way to win up in Collegeville it would be the start of a wild ride to the end of the season in the MIAC. We'll see.

The Knights ride on to Manitou Field to take on the Oles in the final MIAC Tackle Cancer Game of the season. One would expect Carleton to be favored in this year's Cereal Bowl with the way they have been playing this year. They also have the incentive of winning back the Goat Trophy and getting the Eagle to face their school for the year. This would be the game I would want to be at this weekend, if we weren't headed North to close up the cabin for the winter.

Things start to shake out in the Conference over the next five weeks. St. Thomas and Gustavus are in control being undefeated, St. John's, Bethel and Concordia each have a single loss in the MIAC and all five teams have a chance of either being the conference champs or the next best team and still getting into the play-offs. Not everybody will end up in one of these two spots and we'll know soon enough who these two teams will be. That's why we play the games, eh?

We have a winner! I remember one of our DB's talking smack to him all game his senior year. Reason being, he had more INT's than Hoag had catches!!

Hoag = Legs of a Gazelle, Hands of a Chicken, Toughness of a Slug  ;D But he gets an A+ in self-promotion. He's squeezed every nickel possible out of being Mr. Irrelevant

I was checking out the calendar on UST's "5th Quarter Club" page. Judging from the calendar and photos, it looks like UST has about 8 or 9 offense vs. defense scrimmages every Friday during the regular season for the freshmen and sophomores. Not sure if this is new or if they've been doing this for a while, but this is an improvement from the 3 or 4 Sunday scrimmages we used to have at UST. If I remember right, I think we used to scrimmage Bethel, Hamline, and maybe St. Olaf and that would be it for the younger guys on the squad. UST did a bad job of assessing and developing talent that was on their roster. It seems like these additional scrimmages really gives the younger guys an opportunity to develop and see what they can work on by getting some reps on film.

I may be out of the loop, but do the JV teams still scrimmage in the MIAC like they used to? Just curious.

Bethel used to scrimmage UST, Concordia, St. Olaf, GAC and sometimes northwestern on a regular basis on Mondays. When I was an upperclassman I remember the JV playing UST twice a year a few times. One home, one away. I'm assuming Bethel still plays a JV schedule, but it sounds like UST might not be one of the teams involved.
Augsburg had a JV game scheduled a couple weeks ago. It was possibly with Bethel but I know it was canceled last minute.

I see that SJU wideout Evan Clark is out for the rest of the season with an elbow injury. Assuming that he has played in all five games this season, could he be eligible for a medical redshirt?

No, I don't think he'd qualify.  It's a shame; he was looking promising as a deep threat.

QuoteGuidelines for Medical Hardship Waiver Requests
For a student-athlete to receive a Medical Hardship Waiver per Bylaw 14.2.4, the following four conditions must be met:
>The student-athlete may not have participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent of the team's completed contests/dates of competition.
>The injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the season.
>The injury or illness does not have to occur during practice/competition, but it must be incapacitating.
>Appropriate medical documentation must exist and be provided.

Duff, I think you're referencing the D1 eligibility rules.  D3's are different.  The general rule in D3 is that you must have participated in less than one third of the scheduled contests.  So if he's played in five games he would be ineligible for a medical redshirt.

Why the NCAA would have different criteria for different divisions is confusing to me but they do.

Huh.  Thanks, BW.  I was unaware of the divisional difference.
