I was having dinner with some friends from BBE this past weekend & they were wondering why they had to play Mpls. North High? I responded, "because Mpls. North is THAT small of a school." That one seemed to get lost in translation.

ROR if you like the aerial game, look for Eden Valley-Watkins,they are the central Minnesota high school version of GAC.

That's part of it, but the other part is the MSHSL only counts poor kids (free/reduced price lunch) as 60% of the non-poor.  So if their actual enrollment is 400 with 350 poor kids, their adjusted enrollment for classification purposes is 260.  It doesn't make as much sense with Basketball when the poverty doesn't seem to reduce participation.

According to the MSHSL website BBE has 175 kids enrolled and Minneapolis North has 199 kids enrolled. Assuming this probably includes the adjustments for demographics but maybe not. Anyway Tyler Johnson is going to have a big game for Mnpls North; he already has a 70 yd QB keeper for a TD. Just saw this post and just saw that on Twitter. He has committed to the U of MN.

That's after the adjustments.  BBE had 195 enrolled last year.  North is a little harder to track down since I think they are combining a couple schools for their sports and they only reported the 12th graders last year.  They're probably above 300 enrollment since most of the other high schools in that area are 85-90% free/reduced price lunch kids.

Scary when Matuska went down, he needs to be out there IMHO.

I'm going to venture a guess that Matuska won't be playing this weekend.  He looked pretty rattled on the sideline.
On the SJU Coaches Show with Gary Fasching on KOOL-TV tonight, Gary did confirm that Matuska did experience a concussion and it is unclear at this point if he will play this weekend.

North was almost closed down a couple of years ago.  I kind of like their story.

If SJU is part of a 3 way tie at 9-1 and misses the playoffs I'd obviously be bummed but I don't think I'm in favor of changing the AQ for non "power" conferences. The guaranteed way to make the filed is to win your conference. Anything outside of that leaves you on the bubble.

Two other thoughts/questions.
- Is there no chance of 2 teams from the same league receiving at large bids? Say there were 3 WIAC teams at 9-1.
- Assuming the WIAC has two teams make it, one AQ & one at large, couldn't one of them be moved to a different bracket/region?

What if both the WIAC and MIAC have three teams each at 9 and 1 at the end of this season?

OY - is all I can say.

Anybody know if the Stanger that plays QB for Becker is related to the Stanger that played at SJU?

You have to be sh*tting me. The government counts the students of North, almost exclusively from a certain racial group, as approximately two thirds a person?  Sometimes you just can't make this stuff up.

Yes, Andrew is Corey's son. Andrew is a better baseball player than football player and has been getting looks from several programs for baseball. I don't see him coming to SJU.

I was wondering about that, and now I feel really old.

bennie - being on the west coast, I hope you caught the Caps/Flames last night. It was a clinic. If my Caps play like that every night, they will go 81 - 1.

The MSHSL probably would reject the notion that they're a government organization, but it's an association of mostly public schools and the state legislatures have been known to force the state athletic associations to do things from time to time.

I also forgot to mention that the schools above 50% poverty can apply to move an additional class down.  It's a race to the bottom with most high schools.  Regardless of what school administrators say, winning is the only thing that matters.  They're all desperate to find a conference or class they can win.  I've mostly given up the argument to reduce the number of classes in high school sports.  I just want to change the name of the top class from AAAA or 6A to "Division 1" or "Open Class"  The trophy for the top division will just read "State Champion".  There can be only one State Champion, the rest are "Small School Class Champions".
