Great all around game for SJU today, as someone else noted, particularly the play calling.  There were several series where BU seemed to have Sura bottled up, and SJU would run a timely FB dive to take advantage  of all the attention that Sura was getting, and pick up a quick 5+ yard run.  Also some good option runs out of Martin, and well timed pitches.

I was disappointed in the offensive performance out of BU...just flat and no urgency.  Bummed to see Trey Anderson go down with another torn ACL (what I heard).  Feel terrible for the kid. Sura had a great game...picks his pay around blocks well, and has a decent speed burst when he gets a lane.

Looking forward to seeing SJU in the playoffs!

I don't know that I would say Sura had a 'great' day, I thought Bethel kept him contained pretty much all day. He had 36 rushes for 102 yards which is only a 2.8 yard average, compared to his normal season average of 5.9 yards per carry.  It was obvious that Bethel's goal was to stop Sura. Unfortunately it left other areas pretty open, especially in the defensive secondary which Martin took advantage of.

Yeah. the 2.8 ypc was the story. He had a few longer runs, but for the most part we kept him bottled up. SJU did a nice job calling plays that complimented that attention Sura got, but Sura was a lot easier for the D to handle than Roberts a few weeks ago.

IMO, if there's an All American RB in the MIAC this year, he's wearing purple.

Dzurik seemed completely unprepared to step in and play. And Bethel seemed really flat for a game against SJU. Where was the fire on offense??

Don't box scores typically include total penalties & yards? BU had some untimely (dumb) ones today. I wanted to see the full count but couldn't find them on their box score.

Too many by SJU, too.  I lost count of false starts.  :-\

Found it. 10-87 for SJU. You're right Duff, too many. 4-66 for BU - they made them count.

I wonder how they count penalty yards. If Bethel only had 4 penalties, and they were all major 15 yard penalties, that should only be a total of 60 yards, not 66.  I went over the play by play and there were 3 personal fouls for 15 yards and 1 holding penalty for 10 yards, so yards penalized should only have been 55.

Maybe the same physics students working the gates also work in the SID's office filling in box scores?

I think the extra 11 yards is due to yards lost from any live ball foul. The BU holding penalty happened on 1st & 10. It was nicely excuted reverse where they picked up a 1st down and more. Because of the holding penalty it remained 1st down but was only 6 yards to go.

At least one of the penalties was from point of infraction and gave Bethel a first down and 6 or 7 to go, which was really odd.

Did anyone else who was at the game yesterday happen to notice the outerwear of clothing Brandon Novak had on? The Johnnies sideline is usually a hodgepodge of styles - another example of the folksy style so many love us for. Anyway, Novak was wearing an old SJU hockey jersey. It was not only a great looking jersey but almost make it seem like a rube from the stands made it down to the sideline. Anyone know if there was a particular reason for it or did he realizeore warm clothes would be needed & it was the only thing in his trunk?

Yes, we noticed and just chalked it up to Novak being Novak.

The holding penalty was downfield, so the penalty is marked off from the spot of the foul. Since it was about 16 yards from the original LOS, the 10 yard mark off put it back 6 yards short of the original 1st down mark. Since they replay the down on a penalty it ended up being 1st and 6. Not really that odd.

So are you saying any yards lost from the penalty count towards penalty yards?  For example, if BU had the ball at their 20 yard line and threw an 80 yard touchdown pass but was called back because of an illegal motion penalty, then that would count 85 yards in penalty yards?  Doesn't sound right to me.

UST converted a drop kick on an extra point! And had more then a few trick plays that just blew my mind!!! I would hope that it would be highlited on ESPN...IT WAS NUTTS!
Yep, the first of the three 2 pt. conversions, you know...the behind the back pass... that must have been super sweet. At first reading the box score I thought is was a normal 2 pt. conversion but after seeing it on ESPN this was perhaps the trickiest of trick plays I have ever seen. Then to run two more 2 pt. conversions, the Tommies must have seen something on film about Carleton that made them so nervous that had to run three 2 pt. conversions. As you said, CT....IT WAS NUTS!

Now here's an example of where a crazy, unorthodox backwards pass and two point conversion makes sense.  Sucks that it was a Bret Bielema coached team that came out on top.

Yes, "great" is probably an oversell, I guess I just thought he did a good job of taking what he could get against a defense that was, as you pointed out, selling out to stop him.

Martin is an interesting story to me...hard to believe that a guy with such a limited QB history can run the show for a top flight team.  He looked a lot more comfortable out there than he did last year vs. BU, IMO.  Smart option plays, taking off with the ball on passing plays when he had lanes, etc.

Hopefully Dzurick can move the offense enough to take down the Auggies next week, though I don't think the Augsburg and SJU defenses are all that comparable...  :)
