Mr.MIAC

I just received an email about the Tommie Give Day starring none other than the MIAC's favorite football coach. Your generosity is much appreciated...

I notice it's a virtual fundraiser.  I gave a virtual $1000.

WOW!!! This isn't pee wee football! Only one team wins. This is a sport where one teams objective  is to destroy the other team, physically and mentally.  Carleton could of ran some trick plays if they wanted to they could tried anything on the Tommie's to win. So UST had a little fun with some trick plays, in which they had game time experience to try them out. The game had to be fun for the Tommie's, I know it was!  Carleton on the other had should be at a cross road,  if I were them this would be the wake-up call... that maybe the program needs... I would take that loss personally! I would try to change the program and figure a way to compete with other teams in MIAC at a higher level. We all have been in blow outs, on the winning side and the losing side... I learned more from the losing side and by losing first you learn to win...

As a neutral party to all of this I honestly think UST would get a better "game look" at trying these plays out on their own players in practice than running them against Carleton.  Just my opinion on that.  I get the whole getting it on tape part but the teams in the playoffs I'm sure will go over each of these trick plays once to know how to line up and that will be the end of it.  As far as Carleton taking the loss and trying to figure out how to change the program, that is a bit tougher than just going and saying hey we should recruit like UST.  They can't.  Admissions requirements at Carleton are much higher than UST.  Now don't take that as me saying UST is full of stupid kids, they aren't.  It's just not the same academic institution that Carelton is. They won't get the same kids because the academics eliminate a good amount of good football players for them.  It was the same at MAC, but they've managed to find a way.  So yes Carleton can try to get better but it won't ever be able to match the athletes UST gets. Then again most of the MIAC probably can't, other than the ones you see at the top consistently year to year.
Well said badger1845.
Chicago Tommie, I know you are relatively new to the MIAC and had probably never heard of the MIAC or UST until a couple years ago when your son was being recruited by the Tommies. Carleton's best chance was during the Ramler years, but Kurt moved on because, as rumor has it, not being able to get football players accepted at Carleton just as badger 1845 noted. After a year as SJU Offensive Coordinator he took the Head Coach job at St. Scholastica who is the likely Round 1 opponent of the Tommies in the play-offs. At this point the football program has only been around since 2008 and they are top dogs in the UMAC but the UMAC is not the MIAC so the Toms may be able to put up 80+ in a play-off game. Last year SJU beat them 35-7 and their QB threw 8 interceptions. Once out of the 1st round, the games get a little more competitive.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I saw the behind the back pass play on channel 9 sports and thought it a bogus thing to do on a football field regardless of the score.

Looked like something we would do at St. Augustine Elementary during recess when I was in 6th grade.

What was the point? Not like the Tommies would use this in a competitive game it would get picked off and maybe housed the other way. No opponent is going to spend time practicing to defend it so why do it.
Yes. This.  Nothing to do with red tinted glasses. I am no Johnnie fan. Not by a long shot. That play was the single stupidest play I have ever seen on a football field. No film value. No value in getting better. Is there one single Tommie fan that has the guts to tell the truth on this board? There was one single and obvious reason for the Tommies to run that play. And that was to embarrass the other team. That's it. Period. And I get it that some Tommie fans are OK with that. Just having fun? That's a bunch of crap. Playing football already is fun.

So why not man up and tell the truth? "We did it to embarrass the other team and we are ok with that.  We did it because we can.  This is big boy football and that's how we roll. We could care less if anyone else likes it. If you don't like it, beat us."

My opinion? The Tommies don't respect their opponents and they don't respect the game.  They will get theirs. And it's not just Johnnie Nation that will enjoy that day.

False. The one single and obvious reason for UST to run that play is on that very film, if you'd bother to break it down.

Let's ease up on the poor, dead pony.  It's quite obvious that Caruso's lackeys aren't about to be swayed.

Agreed.  Didn't really have a reason to pick a side in a St. Thomas game, but I think I do now.

I've seen the point made that they do this to put stuff on film and, theoretically, distract future opponents and burn up the week's practice time preparing for this stuff.  I think that's overblown, but fine.  My question is- how much time is St. Thomas wasting practicing this kind of stuff?  Don't they have a better use for that time?

I really don't think calling someone a "lackey" is a descent into name calling. If so, it is about as mild as it gets. Man up dude.

Did I say I was insulted? I'm not even surprised.
