I have been enjoying the WCCO Tommie broadcast lately when I find time to listen. They seem to celebrate and promote the MIAC and they do like to highlight the positives of the Tommie opponent.  Took a few years to get to this point for me but overall I think it is good for the conference.  The SJU broadcast is definitely a one way street.  It is a very high quality broadcast for D3 and must be profitable for the radio station so why would they change it. I can visualize the old time Stearns County Johnnie fans sitting around the radio listening. Better not mess with it!

Completely agree with Duff and Hazz...he's really top notch in terms of play by play for the D3 level, and better than a lot of larger programs in that area.  He makes it really easy to understand what's going on during the plays for the listener, and during the play, there isn't anyone better in the MIAC.

However, when everything, literally every...single...play that didn't go SJU's way should've been a penalty on the other team, or was a bad penalty call on SJU, or every play at the whistle was a dirty hit or should've been a late hit personal foul etc, etc, etc, it becomes painful to listen to.

I get that he's SJU's guy, and he should be biased, but there is a difference between being biased and having a completely sold out homer that can only see things from one side being on the radio.  As Hazz pointed out, you can feel the awkwardness in the booth when someone else isn't willing to get on board with his rabid opinions.

Agree and having been a "longtime" listener I think that Bryan and Carr boys are getting pretty good about setting Mark straight and might be getting a little tired of the complaining.   I really enjoy Mark's delivery and how he calls the game however he clearly loses his grip too often.  Many times the other guys on the broadcast team just straight out tell him he's wrong.  I'm sure that the SJU admin has had a fair share of complaints.  I would suggest contacting the AD Tom Stock.  One could contact WBHR directly....I believe Mark is the program director or something like that.

Evidently this isn't just an isolated case and VOJ has been doing this for some time now. The fact that he continues to do so indicates that SJU condones his behavior. I think this does not reflect very well on SJU in general.
Mark is employed by WBHR and does the play by play for basketball and hockey as well. Mark is The Voice of the Johnnies. It would take a huge listener backlash (which isn't going to happen) for Mark to not be The Voice of the Johnnies. SJU football is the only D3 program in the midwest (possible the nation...Mount Union maybe) that has a radio network where they sell the rights to other stations. The other stations buy the broadcast rights is because they know they can make money selling the advertising. Mark is a huge part of that. A lot of people didn't like Casey Kasem but American Top 40 was a huge success because of the syndication rights. Mark and Johnnie Football are like that, except on a much, much smaller scale.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

So what have we learned today kids?

1. You walk a fine line when telling jokes that mention vaginal yeast.
2. Never use your work email in a public forum, especially if you're going to make some pretty serious accusations.
3. The Tommies play what John Madden liked to call "black and blue football."
4. It's widely accepted, at least on this board, that certain members of the SJU broadcast team kinda suck.
5. Post Patterns doesn't work as it's supposed to at times.

1.  No fine line there.  Clearly over the line.  And you seem to take great pleasure in repeating it.
2.  Unless you are willing to take the heat.  Like Scott.
3.  The Madden Raiders were the most penalized team in the league and considered the dirtiest team in the league.  Google Jack Tatum.  Not a flattering comparison, but amazingly accurate.  To be perfectly clear, I am not inferring that the Tommies have any Jack Tatum like players.
4.  You Tommies really have a problem with singular versus plural.  VOJ is one person.    Those who have posted their displeasure with VOJ are an exceptionally small sample size.
5.  This one I can agree with.

Casey could also be a nut-job from time to time.

This is mostly innocuous but please refrain from speaking on my behalf for what I have/haven't learned on here.

Radio and online for going back to at least 2002 as I recall listening to the broadcast of the semifinal loss.  I had a dial up modem and occasionally it would cut out and I would have to dial in again.
I think this is one thing Mark has to be advised about.  10-12 years ago the only people listening to games were the Johnnie fans that mostly didn't care about him being a total homer.  Now with high speed internet and a larger radio audience he needs to dial back on some of his comments.

Pat Coleman - I guess my 20 year comment applies to how long I've been involved with D3 football but I could have sworn I could log into d3football.com when I was using the old dialup connection back in the day that I started working at St. John's...

Yes, everyone, I will save you the time to confirm that I am the certified athletic trainer (we take the certified part seriously in our profession) at St. John's and have been reading posts on this website for years without joining in - I guess today I caved and joined the Dark Side of the world internet discussion boards.

I'm sorry if my first post was directed a little too much (okay - a lot too much) at the UST football team and head coach.  This past Saturday I had to do probably one of the toughest things that I have had to ever do by informing our senior quarterback at halftime that his college career was over because he was not able to return the the second half of the game since he suffered a concussion right before the end of the half.  Yet at the same time I knew I was doing the right thing because his future career and overall brain health is and was much more important than the outcome of a college football game.  I might have let my emotions about this situation get a little too much of me as I typed that first post.

If those of you on this board do not want me to share my insights and opinions since I work with a D3 football team let me know.  I guess if a parent of a current player is a member is it wrong for a current support staff member to join in?  Or is this just a place for the former players to relive their glory days with each other  :)

I can crawl back into my hole for another 20 years if I shouldn't be on here - but I've got some great St. John's/John Gagliardi stories I could share with everyone in the weeks, months and years to come...

I remember listening to the games on the radio back in the late '80s. :o

Retired Old Rat

I've refrained from commenting on VOJ but it seems to keep coming back up.

First, the target audience for the broadcast is Johnnie fans.  Mark is a homer, but he's our homer.  No apologies needed for that.

I will say, however, that Mark has been progressively become a little over the top.  I have not heard comments he's made about other coaches so I don't have anything to say about that.  I would suggest that he dial it back a bit.  But not too much.  Mark is an excellent play by play guy.  He needs to put his emphasis back on that and let the other guys handle commentary.  That's what I'm going to tell Tom Stock.

I have not listened to Dave Lee and Eric Nelson for a couple of years.  If they've toned it down, that's good.  They started out as big time homers.  I'll take VOJ and team over the WCCO team every day of the week.  I was so happy when WCCO lost rights to Gopher football and basketball.  I think Dave Lee is a really nice guy but a terrible play by play announcer.

The above is the opinion of ROR.  Management might not agree. I didn't run it by them.
