Or is this just a place for the former players to relive their glory days with each other  :)

I can crawl back into my hole for another 20 years if I shouldn't be on here - but I've got some great St. John's/John Gagliardi stories I could share with everyone in the weeks, months and years to come...

Sideliner, happy to have you here. Don't worry, anyone is free to share stories here, whether they had any actual glory days or not.

There were actually people talking about d3 football before Pat created this site-I remember bulletin boards in which we talked about D3 and SJU-this site did make it easier. I too have been around since the beginning-changed my handle after the first two years.

I have not listened to Dave Lee and Eric Nelson for a couple of years.  If they've toned it down, that's good.  They started out as big time homers.  I'll take VOJ and team over the WCCO team every day of the week.  I was so happy when WCCO lost rights to Gopher football and basketball.  I think Dave Lee is a really nice guy but a terrible play by play announcer.

Two words.....Chad Hartman....the worst in Twin Cities radio history.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Scott, welcome to the board.  Looking forward to some good Gagliardi stories.

I just happened to be on my back to my seat at the end of halftime and saw the Johnnies coming back on the field.  I observed what I think was Nick begging you to let him play the second half.  Nick is such a good kid, I felt terrible for him.  Of course you did absolutely the right thing.

I'm a never was in terms of sports.  God gave me many other good qualities, athletic ability was skipped right over.  Doesn't keep me from spouting off on here from time to time.

I'm the old fat guy who used to take photos at most of the Johnnie games.

Evidently this isn't just an isolated case and VOJ has been doing this for some time now. The fact that he continues to do so indicates that SJU condones his behavior. I think this does not reflect very well on SJU in general.
Mark is employed by WBHR and does the play by play for basketball and hockey as well. Mark is The Voice of the Johnnies. It would take a huge listener backlash (which isn't going to happen) for Mark to not be The Voice of the Johnnies. SJU football is the only D3 program in the midwest (possible the nation...Mount Union maybe) that has a radio network where they sell the rights to other stations. The other stations buy the broadcast rights is because they know they can make money selling the advertising. Mark is a huge part of that. A lot of people didn't like Casey Kasem but American Top 40 was a huge success because of the syndication rights. Mark and Johnnie Football are like that, except on a much, much smaller scale.

I was in no way suggesting that VOJ be fired, only that he tone down his comments a bit.

I think SJU had radio on the internet going back to 1999 maybe 1998, I can remember hearing Novak's name a few times. And that was back when you had to get on right before the game started and hope the dial up didn't cut out, because they had like 10 feeds available-on the plus side you could email questions and the radio guy would answer during the broadcast. Can't remember the first announcer's name but he was good.

Dang, it's busy tonight and there is school tomorrow. You'll all be very tired in class.

Two things I've learned:

- Never get involved in a land war in Asia, and

- Never go in against a Sicilian when death is in the line

I listened to the 2000 Stag loss to MUC over the interwebs.  That was using RealAudio (a legacy technology that has only been fixed for about two years. Maybe three.)

I also listened to the 1992 1993 semi-final loss to MUC over the radio.

Sorry...Dave Lee has Hartman beat to the bottom.  There's a reason he's no longer calling games for the Gophers.

So true! And usenet forums. I didn't mean to claim to be first in this area. :)

VOJ's first year was 2000, I think.  I remember seeing him at the 2000 Stagg Bowl.

I was at that game-they also had that on tv.

Interestingly, those two MUC losses bookended my time in the Johnnie football wilderness after my emigration to Oz. I actually only heard the second half of the Stagg game as I searched for it on a hunch that Sunday morning. I can visualize sitting at the desk in the study (before the ever increasing brood consumed all rooms) like it was yesterday.

No idea how to post a pic or even if this will work.

I think this means something, and is part of what makes this conference special. One of the guys chasing down Martin in both games was also a good friend and hs teammate, Jesse Addo. Nick Martin was a big time competitor and had an incredible senior season. Neither sideline  wants that to be the way anyone goes out. These coaches and players are a lot closer and have a lot more respect for each other than some might believe. Part of what makes the MIAC special!!

I find it convenient for a team to have respect for their opponent with no intent to injure, while also playing such an aggressive style that leads to significant penalties and yards that by their very nature can cause injury. The aggressive play may not start with an injury being the desired outcome but injuries from such plays can be avoided if a team isn't committing late hits and personal fouls.

Great photo set! Checkout #100. If there's one photo that shows the disparity in size between UST and SJU, that one is it. Remember that objects in the foreground are "supposed" to look larger than those in the background.
