Had to wait a while before I could do this. Especially for Rev, Bench and CT. I believe that the Johnnies were a very good team this year. I guess the Toms were quite a bit better. Good luck, and .....

"...we Johnnies will be rooting for the Tommies next week."

Finished that one for you.
I know this was written tongue in cheek, but I also know that if I go back to past years where the Tommies have been in the playoffs and the Johnnies haven't, there have been plenty of comments implying that we should all jump on the Purple Bus for the sake of the MIAC. Tom Thumb, you are right, I will be jumping on a Purple Bus this year...a Red and Purple Bus...that kind of hurts my eyes and offends my ability to match, but the jaunty sailor cap is fun! 8-)

Is it now?  Interesting. A side of you I didn't expect, bennie.   :-*

At least we Johnnie fans don't disappear after a loss.  :P

Well, UST hasn't lost  ;)

MIAC board in the offseason is mostly just random musings about the Hawthorn Hawks, fishing and beer.

I like all 3 of those things, and understand two of them, but don't really feel the need to contribute.

We are getting a bit in front of ourselves here, isn't there a game against Wabash for the Tomcats and a game against Mary Hardin Baylor for the Wildcats before Purple Rain ensues on this side of the bracket?
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Speaking of leaving your feet ....

That's actually really cool. When was that?

I wonder which side got the loose ball?  A thrilling play.

Wabash against Albion in the first round --- Wabash recovered the fumble on the sack of the Albion quarterback.

I know who I'm rooting for - at least this weekend.

I love that play so much.  My favorite play of the year by far.  I need to gif up Ethan Buresh's play from Saturday- no not the one that is featured as the Play of the Week- but his crazy interception earlier in the game.  The fumble return is obviously the iconic play from Saturday's game, but in the "whoa, how did he do that" sense, Ethan's INT Saturday was right there with the Connor Ludwig flying sack/fumble.

I will definitely be a Wabash fan this weekend, but of all the teams left, Linfield is my new team!

This is going back a few pages, but it has been busy here.

A UST poster said with authority that the hit on Martin that put him out was not an intent to injure. Since the ball had left his hand, what exactly was the intent then? It could no longer affect that play. Also, and this is from memory, Martin had left the pocket, so he had escaped the pass rush. This hit came from either an LB or DB, who knew the status of the play at that time.

I didn't know we had clear evidence it was late? My guess was the intent was to disrupt the QB's throw or sack him if the opportunity presented itself. There are a lot of leaps and assumptions being made on both sides here. While officials are not always correct and do miss things, the one over the play in this case, did not throw the flag. Meanwhile a bunch of us who have not seen the full play are making big leaps.

For those that played, they also know how hard it is to instantly hit the brakes when your chasing down a qb and the ball gets quickly released. Hitting a QB the instant after a QB throws is generally not flagged because it happens almost simultaneously with the speed of the game. This becomes even more challenging when the QB is outside the pocket, given the threat to run is even more present. Officials are put in a very difficult position these days with the rules being muddied, with an end goal that everyone wants to accomplish a much safer game.

Separately, from my anecdotes I find it very interesting how little targeting is called at the D3 level, with the ejection rule in place, especially compared to watching a B1G game. I wonder if that is because they get nervous without the benefit instant replay.

I did see the play on the stream. I relayed info at the time in response to a question, that it was a tad late, but I didn't think the lateness was a penalty, since it wasn't all that late. My contention is that he slammed Martin to the ground, which was unnecessary since the ball was gone. He could have easily held up and just used Martin to stop his momentum by giving him a bump, or tackled him without the force to the ground. As I said then, I believe that is what is called a penalty in the NFL, but didn't know the specific rule to determine if it was a penalty in college. Though, IMHO, it should be. There, is that comprehensive enough?

Oh, DoubleO, you still didn't answer my question about what the intent was on that play.

Retagent, your asking what the defensive player's intent was? He was in pursuit of a QB who had dropped back to pass. His intent? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it was to sack Martin. Straws, Retagent. Straws.

I think CT's raw honesty better reflects the the Tommie spirit than this word-parsing, semantic free-for-all of a defense. CT embraces the raw gusto and arrogance that got Tommies where they are today. Be true to yourself and revel in your hubris.

Speaking of a qb not getting the same protection out of the pocket versus in the pocket, some rules apply to the receiver/db as well. We all pretty much know the rule about a defender not being able to contact a receiver after 5 yards downfield (illegal contact), but how many fans know the rule that once a qb leaves the pocket then that rule no longer applies? In other words, a defender can legally chuck a receiver past the 5 yard zone once the qb leaves the pocket. I know for certain this is an NFL rule, but not sure about college. College rules generally follow NFL rules so I'm guessing it's the same in college. Obviously a defender still can't hold a receiver or interfere with him while the ball is in the air, but he can try and knock him down while the qb is out of the pocket.
