Some Johnnie news:

Josh Bungham and Trevor Warner played in the All-American Bowl last weekend. Bungham was named Offensive MVP for their team's victory.

http://www.gojohnnies.com/news/2016/1/20/FOOTBALL_0120161442.aspx

From the press release:

QuoteThe All American Eagles defeated the Flagler Knights, an amateur football team, 9-0 to claim All American Bowl XXI.

Is this an article from the Onion  ??? ;)
Was Burt Reynolds or Adam Sandler playing QB?

OzJohnnie

Oh, it was one of those post season quasi-suspect all-star games, obviously. But let some guys have some glory.  Probably the last game they ever play.

No. There is an adult amateur football league in FL. The Flagler team is mostly Flagler College kids I think. No team at the school. There are teams in many FL cities like Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville, etc.

From the Highland Villager opinion page this week.  Looks like Willard isn't exactly enamored with the dominance and ethics that St. Thermos displayed this fall or the U of M for that matter.  To jump from U$T dominance to the U being ineffective in their attempt to "becoming a sports powerhouse" is kind laughable too.  As much as I despise the U of St. Thermos (due to my own personal bias) the U of Mediocrity is nowhere close to becoming a powerhouse. If the "U" really had the goal of being a dominant athletic program wouldn't they lessen academic standards for athletes?

"I'm a uniter...not a divider."

Willards are either very happy or very angry. It seems there's no moderation if you're a Willard.

Should the U lessen their academic standards so they can compete with the likes of Stanford, Notre Dame, and Northwestern?

Completely different. Those three universities draw national student bodies. University of Minnesota doesn't have anywhere near the kind of name cache or reputation to attract the kind of student athletes of the three schools you are thinking about. Not only that, but those three schools are private institutions with different missions to a flagship state school like Minnesota which should be targeted toward Minnesota kids.

I'm guessing the original post was a more than a bit tongue in cheek. Given that the U of M, a fine academic school in its own regard, is not in the league of the 3 other schools mentioned. All of them renowned for their rigorous admissions standards, athletes included.

Could be. This obviously isn't my home board so I don't know the posters so well. You guys, however, keep the conversation going, for which I'm quite grateful!

Very perceptive.  Was getting tired reading about "Making a Murderer" and thought we could use a different topic to banter around.

What a find. Doesn't like UST football winning, doesnt like gopher basketball losing. Hates pro sports owners, even those of the kitschy St Paul Saints. A quick search of Willard finds him to be quite the malcontent. He is a favorite over on the gopher boards for his frequent letters to the editor at the U of M Daily. He appears to be famous for one thing though. He was one of the originators in the legal action against minneapolis to cut the cord on the red light camera tickets.

The innovative and interactive Olivet recruiting thing posted made me wonder. Is D3 football just catching up with modern times, or is it losing a bit of its identity. We have publicized commitments from hs kids, more expansive spring practices, facility wars, interactive recruiting videos with scantily clad co-eds as tour "hosts."

Slippery slope or just catching up with the times?

T-shirts and jeans were definitely over the line.

I say catching up with the times. Some programs are just ahead of the rest; SJU ,UST, Mount Union and others with football programs. I will add Augsburg Wrestling to that list. Just a different animal than the other schools.
