As a slightly related aside, is UST putting more into PR than other MIAC schools? I've noticed far more UST stories in the ST, PP, radio, and local television the past few years. I've been under the impression that with UST's size, success, and metro location the coverage is natural.
I'm not sure. Let's ask for a neutral observer. Old Auggie- does the Auggie wrestling team, with it's national prominence, get anywhere near the press coverage as do the various UST sports in the Twin Cities media? Is it possible that Tommie Media is churning out press releases and the local media is picking up the stories on slow news days....i.e.: when Gopher Men's sports are playing? :-)
Natural news stories or Tommie Media doing their job by churning out press releases about anything UST sports related?

105, I'm not sure that is a fair comparison.  Iowa seems to be unique among states to consider wrestling a 'major' or even 'semi-major' sport.  In most states I doubt it is even in the top ten.  Kenyon (and now Denison) have absolutely dominated D3 swimming (much more so than Wartburg and Augsburg in wrestling) for decades; I wonder how many outlets in Ohio even know, much less care, about that?

I bet you're right. Wouldn't it be interesting if UST took an evangelical approach to the phrase and promoted Christianity as inseparable from the Common Good?  That was certainly the position of the school's namesake.

I'm not sure it's limited to athletics. UST's academics, development, and administration seem to get lots of coverage too. I think some of this comes down to UST's size, resources, and the fact that it has large graduate schools churning out research. Perhaps I'm wearing UST blinders, but it seems like when it comes to press coverage UST is only bested by the U of M within the TC. When I hear UST administrators say the longterm goal is for the university to be the Catholic counterpoint to the U of M within the region, then I see lot's of press coverage of all things UST, it makes me wonder how much PR goes into achieving this goal.

Ha! I have thought through this myself and the answer is an unequivocal no. Well the Augsburg Wrestlers do get some good quality media attention when they actually win another National Championship but until they raise the trophy, eh, not much.

Since it is the Off Season, and the rules are a little relaxed, I don't feel out of bounds posting this.

A while back there was discussion regarding the down year the U of M is having in hockey. I pointed out their youth and inexperience playing together. I also said that there was some real talent on the team and they would show improvement throughout the year. Take a look at the Big 10 standings and see who sits atop the ranks. I still think they won't go far in the post season, even if they get there, but there is some hope for the future.

As an aside, BDB, are you familiar at all with Tommy Novak? I see he played HS at St Thomas Acad, but is from River Falls. What's the deal?

Ok, I'll bite.  It's the off-season and what else is there to do?

So, Rev, you reckon Perra called up the Pioneer Press sports desk and said, "Have I got a story about me for you!" or do you reckon that maybe the Tommie media office helped a little?   it's funny that he's being told by Caruso in the PP that he needs to make the team to get play time.  That's the sort of conversation I would have expected to happen before deciding to transfer (or speak to the PP about playing ambitions).  Different strokes, I guess.

If Caruso is speaking to a player, he's speaking to the players (and parents) that have been hanging on for thier chance at Tommie glory only to see it snatched in some high-profile media campaign.  "We wouldn't take a tranfer unless..." sounds like a message to the spurned, not the annointed.

Comparing football and wrasslin' in terms of media coverage is akin to comparing an orange to a bicycle.

Anyway, my biggest problem with the article is saying that North Dakota and Drake are "Missouri Valley Conference" football schools, when they belong to the Big Sky and Pioneer Conferences, respectively.

HWT Donny Longendyke transfered to Augsburg from the University of Nebraska (yes the Cornhuskers) and wrestled last year, his first year at Augsburg as a sophmore. This went completely unnoticed by the local media and everyone on this board except for Duffman. I would guess this was at least as newsworthy as Perra transferring to UST but it never made it to the local media for whatever reason ;). Longendyke is also from MN and was a huge contributor to Augsburg's 2015 National Champion wrestling team, winning the individual National Championship last year and clearly holding down the number 1 ranking this year.

I believe AO has the 411 on this guy. I didn't run into him unless it was at the young levels of youth hockey, that I'm aware of anyway.

This is a football forum, not wrestling, so I don't see how you can blame this board for not mentioning that here. Local media, yeah, but not this board.

That was a "tip of the cap" to Duffman but the context was lost. No blame intended.

In all seriousness, SJU practically owns a reporter at the hometown St Cloud Times and they have had less coverage this off-season than UST. Undoubtedly UST are putting in a big media effort.  Nothing wrong with that, of course, just a different approach to institutional promotion than a comparative school in the cities like Bethel.

I remember back in the 2013 season the PP would each week post how SJU and UST did that week, but would never mention Bethel even though Bethel was undefeated and had beaten both SJU and UST. I emailed the PP asking why those schools always got mentioned but the conference leader never got any ink. I didn't get a response back, but after that they started posting the results of Bethel's games the rest of the year.

I understand that the subject is ok. Just pointing out that wrestling is not the main subject of this board so it shouldn't be a surprise that a wrestling transfer didn't get mentioned on this board. OA did clarify that it was meant as a compliment to Duffman and not blaming the board for not mentioning it here.  :)
